look at those awesome gloves!

We had 3 pairs of those in the kit bag when I was at school!

As for grip, if the recommended method doesn't work for you then try something else, but make it still gives you the range of movement needed so that you can actually play all the shots.

Re: Batting grip

Ripping, Maybe its just normal for you!

bit like my leg spin! my wrongun turned out to be the righten with my legspin being the new wrongun>

Re: Batting grip

After coaching Junior cricket for a while, if I could only teach batsmen one thing it would be the orthodox grip.

Those that get the orthodox grip right the earliest (See Jonesy picture back a page), and learn to play the full range of shots using it, are the ones who develop into the better batsmen. Those that don't are usually destined to become bowlers.

Certainly early on those that grip with the bottom hand under, the most common mistake (baseball style), do well because they hit harder across the ball. (The grip is usually because they are trying to swing a bat too big for them- which I feel is the biggest mistake Junior cricket parents make.) But, by the time the bowlers start to deveop at 12/13 their time is limited.

I think that once you feel comfortable with an orthodox grip, and can play all the shots, their is scope to move the hands around a bit to suit your style but i'd certainly encourage every kid to keep it orthodox early on.

Re: Batting grip

Excellent advice Barney. Spot on.

I have heard high performance blokes at cricket nsw say...

70% of the kids who come into our programme have set up issues.

Most of the problems in technique stem from poor setup/grip.

Re: Batting grip

Jacko, those stats don't surprise me. I've seen local representative juniors at 13/14 yrs old in the nets and nearly all of the batsmen have grip or set up issues. Right grip, right set-up = less risk = last longer = more runs.

i noticed someone mentioned that the grip pictured back a page was uncomfortale. The most comfortable bat that I have picked up was one from Laver and Wood (75% sure) which had a oval rather then round handle. Sat nicely in the V's, and teaches you how to get the orthodox grip because it feels uncomfortable to grip it any other way. Anyone use one for any length of time?

Re: Batting grip

I find that the oval shape handle is very comfortable and I have to say that changing to a bat with one, as well as sorting out my back swing/grip has improved my batting a lot.

Re: Batting grip

Thanks Mas for the input. An oval handle might be part of the next bat purchase, providing I can find them in a ready made bat. don't know how common they are hear in Oz.

Re: Batting grip

They are becoming increasingly popular, most companies will have bats with an oval handle in the range.

You can sort of replicate it by adding a half grip, but it's not quite the same.
