BBL Chat thread

Tonight's match saw the Sydney Sixers take on Perth Scorchers at Coffs Harbour International Sports Stadium. The Sixers batted first and were rather well restricted by the Scorchers for most of their innings but a late flurry courtesy of Dan Christian's 35 not out from 20 balls propelled the Sixers to 4/151 from their 20 overs. Ashton Agar did the job for the Scorchers with a tight 2/23 from four overs.

In reply, the Scorchers lost early wickets to be 3/44 after 6.2 overs but Ashton Turner's captain's knock of 69 from 41 balls boosted the Scorchers and saw them get home with six balls to spare, finishing on 5/152 from 19 overs. The Scorchers remain on top of the ladder with three games remaining while the Sixers stay in third place and have four games to play.

Tomorrow is a double header, Hobart Hurricanes host Sydney Thunder at the MCG at 11:10am AWST (2:10pm AEDT, 3:10am UTC) while Melbourne Stars host Adelaide Strikers also at the MCG at 4:15pm AWST (7:15pm AEDT, 8:15am UTC).

Mind you A few teams have been caught out due to having covid go through their squad and therefore haven't had all their players back.

Thunder won well too. The top 3 have branched out it's a battle for 4th and 5th. You'd assume McDermott wins enough games for the Canes to get 4th but 5th good luck, I'll go the Renegades purely on the draw but honestly who knows.

Some interesting results over the past few nights. Monday's earlier game saw Sydney Thunder have a bit too much power for Hobart Hurricanes in chasing down a modest total of 6/139, reaching 1/140 with 16 balls to spare while the later game saw Melbourne Stars do enough to again chase down a modest score from Adelaide Strikers, reaching the Strikers' total of 9/139 with 5/140 and five balls to spare.

Tuesday was the second of back-to-back days of double headers. Perth Scorchers proved to be far too good for Melbourne Stars in the earlier game, the Scorchers batted first and registered 3/196 from their 20 overs while the Stars could only muster 9/149 in reply. Sydney Sixers were too strong for Melbourne Renegades in the later match, the Sixers batted first, compiling 6/150 while the Renegades were bowled out for 105 in reply.

Wednesday's fixture saw Adelaide Strikers taking on Brisbane Heat, the Strikers reached a total of 4/161 from their 20 overs. The Heat started okay but fell in a heap to be all out for 90.

Tonight's match was the Melbourne derby with Melbourne Renegades taking on Melbourne Stars. The Renegades batted first and never really got going, finishing with 7/122 from their allotment of 20 overs. The Stars chased the total down fairly easily, reaching 4/123 with 33 balls remaining.

There are 10 games left of the home and away season and this is how the ladder stands below.

Last Friday morning saw Adelaide Strikers take on Perth Scorchers who had to make several team changes due to COVID-19 issues. The Scorchers registered 9/127 from their 20 overs while the Strikers managed to chase the target down fairly comfortably, reaching 4/130 with three overs to spare.

On Saturday morning, the Strikers hosted Melbourne Stars at Adelaide Oval. The Strikers notched 6/155 from their 20 overs and this looked to be a fairly modest total. However, the Stars never really got going and could only muster 8/132 in reply. The evening match was the "Sydney Smash" with Sydney Sixers taking on Syndey Thunder. The Sixers batted first and made 5/197 led by Daniel Hughes' innings of 66 while Josh Philippe made 57. In reply, the Thunder fell well short, finishing on 9/137. Steve O'Keefe did the damage with the ball, taking 4/18 from four overs in a Player of the Match performance.

Sunday's fixture saw the Heat hosting Melbourne Stars at the Gabba in Brisbane. The Heat batted first and made a modest 6/149. The Stars chased down the total easily reaching 2/150 with 37 balls to spare with Glenn Maxwell leading the way with 2/19 off four overs with the ball and 37 runs from 30 balls with the bat.

Monday saw two matches played, Sydney Sixers took on Adelaide Strikers in Adelaide in the early game with the Sixers making 7/161 from their 20 overs. The Strikers chased down that score without much fuss, reaching 2/165 with 15 balls to spare with that win securing the Strikers a finals berth having found themselves on the bottom of the ladder just a couple of weeks ago. The later match between Perth Scorchers and Brisbane Heat was played at Docklands in Melbourne, the Heat made 7/155 from their 20 overs before the Scorchers managed to reach the target thanks to some great batting from Mitch Marsh in his return from the test squad. Marsh hit 59 from 34 balls and took a wicket with the ball as the Scorchers won with eight balls to spare.

There was one game on Tuesday with Melbourne Renegades facing Hobart Hurricanes at Docklands in Melbourne. The Hurricanes batted first and scored 5/182 with a win enough for them to claim a spot in the finals. The Renegades looked to be cruising to victory needing 18 runs from 12 balls but two wickets in the penultimate over left them needing 15 from the final over. In the end, the Hurricanes got home by six runs, securing them a finals spot and knocking the Stars out of finals contention.

Wednesday saw a triple header to finish the competition. Sydney Sixers took on Brisbane Heat in the first game at the Gabba with the Sixers making 6/178 from their 20 overs. The Heat started poorly in the chase but a mini burst from Jimmy Pierson and Max Bryant gave them hope. Unfortunately for the Heat, they fell a way short in the end, finishing on 8/151 as the Sixers won by 27 runs.

The second match of the day saw Melbourne Renegades take on Sydney Thunder at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The Thunder batted first and notched 8/170 from their 20 overs, a good score on that wicket but could have had more if not for Cameron Boyce's double hattrick in which he took four wickets in four balls to leave the Thunder reeling before they recovered in the latter part of their innings. The Renegades started slowly but soon got into their groove thanks to Shaun Marsh and Aaron Finch combining well at the crease. Despite Marsh's dismissal, Finch kept going and the equation reduced to 13 runs from 12 balls for victory with seven wickets in hand. Unfortunately for the Renegades, they completely imploded, losing 4/10 in the next two overs to lose by one run. The loss saw the Renegades finish with the wooden spoon for the second straight season and with some big question marks over the make-up of the squad going forward.

The last match between Melbourne Stars and Hobart Hurricanes took place at the same venue in the evening with the Hurricanes resting a good portion of their first choice bowling attack. The Stars batted first and racked up a massive 2/273 from their 20 overs, the highest total in the BBL and the third highest score in T20 cricket ever recorded. The batting was led by Glenn Maxwell who scored 154 not out from 64 balls which is the highest individual score ever in the BBL and is the second fastest century in the BBL as well. Marcus Stoinis chipped in with 75 not out from 31 balls in quite a batting display. The Hurricanes never got close to the target and finished with 6/167, losing by 106 runs.

One week closer to the Shield resumption. I am not backing the Sixers for a threepeat. Too inconsistent. My new favorites are the Scorchers.

Adelaide Strikes took on Hobart Hurricanes today in the Eliminator at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The Strikers won the toss and elected to bat first, Matt Short and Alex Carey put on 145 runs for the first wicket before Carey was dismissed for 67 from 45 balls. Short was out 19 runs later for 89 off 49 balls, a career best for him. In total, the Strikers posted a very strong score of 6/188 from 20 overs.

In reply, the Hurricanes' innings did not start well, losing the competition's in form batsman in Ben McDermott for only six inside the first over. D'Arcy Short compiled a well made 56 off 34 balls in a return for him but he had little support with only Caleb Jewell passing 30 in the Hurricanes' innings. The 'Canes were eventually bowled out for 166 from 19.4 overs as the Strikers claimed victory by 22 runs. Captain Peter Siddle led the way for the Strikers, capturing 4/32 from 3.4 overs.

The Strikers now advance to the Knockout on Sunday against the Sydney Thunder at the same venue. Tomorrow's game is the Qualifier between Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers at Docklands.

Yes, not sure when that will be though as no fixtures have been released as yet for the Shield competition with no announcements yet either for the Marsh Cup. I would expect both to recommence in early February but nothing has been announced as yet.

Perth Scorchers locked horns with Sydney Sixers at Docklands on Saturday in the Qualifier. The match was shaded in controversy with Sydney Sizers' opening batter Daniel Hughes injuring himself in the warm-up after the toss and being replaced by Nicholas Bertus, only after the Scorchers agreed to the change of playing XI in a meeting before the game.

The Scorchers won the toss and elected to bat first. Kurtis Patterson and Josh Inglis got the Scorchers off to a very good start, putting on 120 runs in 12.2 overs before Patterson fell for a well made 64 off just 40 balls. Inglis finished with 78 of 49 balls before being stumped while Mitch Marsh made 28 off 21 balls before skying a ball in the final over. The Scorchers finished up with 3/189 from their 20 overs on what looked to be a good batting wicket at Docklands.

In reply, the Sixers' innings went disastrously, sliding to 7/55 after Sean Abbott's dismissal. Ben Dwarshuis managed to saved face somewhat, smashing 66 from 28 balls at number nine (the highest BBL score at number nine) as the Sixers were bowled out for 141 from 19.1 overs. Jhye Richardson, Jason Behrendorff, Ashton Agar and Andrew Tye all picked up two wickets for the Scorchers.

The Scorchers' win puts them into the Grand Final on Friday (28 January) while the Sixers will play in the Challenger against the winner of Sydney Thunder vs Adelaide Strikers on Sunday. That match starts at 4:15pm AWST, 7:15pm AEDT, 8:15am UTC.
