Best Captain ever

Who is/was the best captain ever of all test playing nations that can win the match by just his captaincy? i would list steve waugh, allan border and mike brealey as the greatest captains.

Re: Best Captain ever

Mike Brearley as he really understood people.

His book, [ame=http://www.amazon.co.uk/Art-Captaincy-Sam-Mendes/dp/0752261843]The Art of Captaincy[/ame], is a must read.

Not the greatest test cricketer ever; but up there when it comes to psychology and man management.

Border, well, he turned the Aussie team around and formed the base for Taylor and co to dominate. A lot of the Aussie grit came from Border himself and he lead by example.

Re: Best Captain ever

Fleming is a very good captain also. I dont know much about Mike Brearly but I heard he is the best captian.

Re: Best Captain ever

hansie crojne was a great captain too. shame he was involved in match fixing. of the current captains i dont think anyones exceptional.

Re: Best Captain ever

currently or "all-time"...
currently (recently), Steven Fleming and Michael Vaughn

but "all-time"... Steve Waugh hands down...Sunil Gavaskar would be my no.2.

Re: Best Captain ever

yeah steve waugh was a good captain. he always had a good team but when they were in trouble he would get them out of it. pontings captaincy is hardly worth noting.

Re: Best Captain ever

sourav ganguly- indias best ever captain :D

captaincy has a lot to do with the kind of players you have. many people said that mahela jayawardene was a good captain but he looked ordinary against australia.

How much of Steve Waugh's great captaincy was down to the immense talent at his disposal? He never managed to win a series in India, despite having a spinner of the quality of Warne to use.

Re: Best Captain ever

Brearley's extraordinary galvanising of Botham is regarded as one of the greatest feats of sporting psychology of all time. Botham recovered from personal ridicule due to his winless captaincy record and his nosedive in form to take a first innings 6 for 95. He was a great Captain ever.

Re: Best Captain ever

For me, Border. "Captain Grumpy" had one of the least experienced teams when he started as captain and he created a determined and hard-nosed outfit which led to the great teams of today for Australia.
Never media-savvy, but near faultless as a leader.

Re: Best Captain ever

I agree that Waugh may have only won so many because of the talent he had in his disposal. I love the guy, and enjoyed the way he played the game, but I think Taylor was a better captain of Australia.

He tried things, and they almost always tended to work. He was a much more imaginative captain than Waugh and for that I'd pick Tubby! :)

Re: Best Captain ever

I don't know about all time, but certainly in my lifetime of watching the game, Mike Brearley is unsurpassed.

Re: Best Captain ever

Allan Border gets it for me, just ahead of Brearley, although on close inspection of Graeme Smith this series i reckon he has a chance to mentioned up with these names by the end of his career.
