Breaking a partnership

Re: Breaking a partnership

Either full out attack or all out defence!

It can depend on how the game is going with regards to which one you choose. No matter what I would say that if you can get the runs to dry up then you'll have a chance of a wicket as the batting side have to take more risks.

Try mixing up the bowlers, have them bowling in short spells, mix pace with spin etc. Get them to concentrate on certain areas, so only attacking the off stump, that sort of thing.

If you get really desperate then bring on a part time bowler, you never know 2 or 3 overs and they just might get the breakthrough.

Re: Breaking a partnership

Heckle them!

and some of the above!

force them into giving up their wicket, you need to give them the oppurtunity to make a mistake.

Re: Breaking a partnership

I'm a huge advocate of part time bowlers and regular changes to the field.

Trying someone who rarely bowls for an over or two and putting the field back often produces a catch as the batsman relaxes and tries to pick up what they think are easy runs.

Also if batters are settled, changing the field every couple of balls or trying unusual field positions can help to unsettle them and give them something different to think about.

These situations are often what separates good captains from very good captains (or just bloody lucky ones!)

Re: Breaking a partnership

I reckon part timers are the way to go. The only thing is - you have to time it right so that you've enough spare runs in case he goes for 20-odd off the over!

Re: Breaking a partnership

i have to say i usually bring on the slowest straightest bowler i have, he bowls pie which does nothing! stick in a couple of close fielders and watch the batsmen suffer!

Re: Breaking a partnership

Bring in your best spinner to break the partnership.
If unfortunately that does not work then bring a regular net bowler to bowl a couple of overs and hope that the batsmen makes a mistake.
But u have change the fielding as well for the batsmen to take the bait.

Re: Breaking a partnership

As Mas Cambias said: full on attack or all out defence.

These situations are where a skilled wicketkeeper can make all the difference. A 'keeper that is good standing up to the pegs can create wickets. There is nothing more beautiful than the sight of planned leg side stumping coming off!

Re: Breaking a partnership

only if your bowlers can bowl where you wnat them too! otheriwse you could be bleeding byes for a while!
