Broken Bat aka "The Sapling"

as per title, last night i was netting as usual, those of you who have seen the pics of my bat will know what she is like. She was knocked in for hours and hours and hours. she has been playing nicely in the nets untill last night she took a yorker to the toe!

was a cracking ball from our 1st XI opening bowler right on my toes. i have no doubt i would have got four runs for it but when i picked up the bat after he congratulated me and we exchanged words i noticed this! You may need to scroll acrss a bit to see all of the pics, and sorry for the quality they were taken on the iphone

so after a trip to the pub with everyone and much sulking i headed to the shed late last night and began surgery!

luckily the crack had split a large chunk of wood as opposed to a small bit, so a healthy bit of wood glue and 3 clamps to hold it in place. This morning she is as solid as a rock. shaved down the excess glue and wood quick sand and she looks fantastic. infact you would not know the split was there. I need to resand the face of the bat now and re oil. but after a bit of re-knocking in on the toe area you can tell any difference to the other side of the bat when knocked on with a mallet.

here is a quick picture just after the clamps came off and very rough sand. i will post a couple more when the has been resanded and oild and possibly a bit of tape to stop it happening again:

Re: Broken Bat aka "The Sapling"

Nice work, although I would have been tempted to get in touch with the guy who made the bat, just in case it goes again.

They should be able to offer you a replacement, especially if it's under a few months old.

Re: Broken Bat aka "The Sapling"

well its about a year old, if the repair is ok i will leave it, but i'm really tempted to get a copy made up asap and start knocking that in!

Re: Broken Bat aka "The Sapling"

If its a year old then its pushing it a bit but it's always worth asking!

That's the problem with bats with a load of grains, they play well but they can also snap easily.

Re: Broken Bat aka "The Sapling"

Sadly yes, but hey ho! its repaired and ive orderd a protective bat cover to chop up and put on the toe and inside edge!

Re: Broken Bat aka "The Sapling"

I would also put a toe guard on it for strength (even though I hate the things). I would also get the cross weave anti-scuff rather than clear as it's a lot stronger and will support the glue/wood more.

You may also want to put a bit of 1" bat tape on the edge as well.

Re: Broken Bat aka "The Sapling"

the repair is solid you would not know it had been done. i just want some protection with out looking like its got protection! if that makes sense! :D

Re: Broken Bat aka "The Sapling"

I know what you mean, but trust me, even the most solid looking repair needs all the help it can get. Then again you can never really tell until you use it for a bit how well it's going to hold up.

Re: Broken Bat aka "The Sapling"

we will c!

hope it holds as i dont fancy knocking another bat in yet! would take to long!

Re: Broken Bat aka "The Sapling"

Don't you love the anticipation though!

Will it break again, will it play the same etc - edge of the seat stuff!

I think the repair should hold, as breaks go it was the 'right' type to have, with plenty of wood to glue together. A toe guard would help (like I said I hate them but they can help in breaks like the one you had), as it would take some of the stress from tapping on the ground etc.

Re: Broken Bat aka "The Sapling"

yea i was gutted last night but after repairing it i'm keen to try it out again! in all honesty i think it was probably nets which did it!

luckily the bat is big enough and secondly the split had enough wood to glue down properly!

bring on the start of the season!

although the prospect of having a new bat is looming?

Re: Broken Bat aka "The Sapling"

Oh and don't oil anywhere near the repair (if you're minded to), it will weaken the repair (as I'm sure you know).

Re: Broken Bat aka "The Sapling"

thanks i'm well aware of what will happen! but for those who dont know and read this you shoule never oil the splice of the bat or a repair with glue as the oil breaks down the Glue!

Re: Broken Bat aka "The Sapling"

Sorry, though I'd chuck that in there as have a had few oil the repair over the years then wonder why the glue stopped working

Re: Broken Bat aka "The Sapling"

its ok, alot of people are'nt aware of what it does or indeed never oil a bat anyway!

Re: Broken Bat aka "The Sapling"

Update on repair!

few pics once she has been sanded.

I found that sort of tape is very effective. I think its called fibreglass tape. I put some over the cracks on my new Kahuna, and they've held up really well.

Re: Broken Bat aka "The Sapling"

Sounds like that you have been getting a lot of yorkers being bowled at you if you have got a broken bat.
Save up and get at least 5 new bats all of which are from your favourite brand, then you can use whichever one you want. It's better than using a broken bat that is falling apart on you.

Re: Broken Bat aka "The Sapling"

Bit of a random comment! i only had one yorker bowled at me and it went for 4! but it also split the toe! any way its all fixed.

i dont see the point in buying 4 or 5 bats when i have a perfectly good one, if you look at the pictures its more than adequate! :)
