Broken Toe!?

Broken Toe!?

I have covertly escape my forum to come here and ask how can you tell if youve broken a toe... im pretty sure i have!

I stubbed it on my staircase haha! The toe went straight into the vertical part when i was running!
I heard a click/snap and lay there in pain for about 10 min - it swelled right up and went purple then it went blue and i struggled to walk on it for about a week... but i had to, so i limped everywhere on it and looked like a fool!. And now 3 weeks later its still swollen hugely (even more than at first) and still agony
I have made a docs appointment but just want Liz's wisdom!
PS. My back is on the mend... been doing my stretches as they seem to work just flares up if i bowl a long spell!

Re: Broken Toe!?

It's hard to say without examining it but it sounds like a soft tissue injury - ligaments/tendons. Did you ice it straight away?

This is extremely painful; more so than a break. ;)

As for your back; make sure you warm up thoroughly and mobilise it between overs.

Re: Broken Toe!?

Yeah got the hash browns out straight away!
Is there anything the doctors can do for it?
Its my big toe and just after the bendy bit in the middle and just before the toe nail that bit is raised quite a bit and feels hard like bone

Re: Broken Toe!?

Hmmm, certainly sounds like it needs looking at.

If it is broken, there is not a lot that can be done unless the bone is out of alignment.

Worse case scenario, it would need surgery... but at least it will get better quicker ;)

Without seeing it and having a feel, it's hard to say. The 'hard bit' is a concern. Let's hope it just needs more rest. Let us know what the doctor says.

Re: Broken Toe!?

i stabbed mine the other week getting in the car of all things! through the trainers! almost ripped my nail clean off my little toe!

Re: Broken Toe!?

HI Liz
Doctor said it could be a fracture that didnt heal very well.
Doctor said due to hard lump its unlikly to be soft tissue damage
Sent me for xray but the xray lady just said the doctor will get results in one week!! AGES!

Re: Broken Toe!?

The x-ray will look at the skeletal structure so will tell you how the bone is realigning if it was broken.

The scan will look at the soft tissue to see what is going on there. Ultrasound, CT and MRI scans are the most common though ultrasound is more cost effective so will probably be the one offered.

Let me know if you were after a more scientific answer.

You know i've been watching too much House MD when i know exactly what they are :p

Sounds painful, why is it that tissue/muscle damage is far more painful than a break?

Nobody has asked me that before... they're probably in too much pain to think about it.

There is generally more trauma; I'm talking strains and sprains rather than just the odd tweak. The area tends to really blow up too and turn all sorts of pretty colours. Also, the pain message usually has a clear route to the CNS and brain ;)

However, there is quite a lot of trauma if a break results in the bone protruding through the skin :D

Re: Broken Toe!?

Just rang up docs and its fractured Liz...they want me to go see em on friday! what are they going to do

Re: Broken Toe!?

Its hard to say without seeing the x-ray Leo, I would need to know which bone is fractured and where.

It is possible that the bone is repairing misaligned, in which case it may need rebreaking and setting.

It may just need pulling into alignment if it is a joint problem and possibly buddy taped.

Whatever they have to do, you know that it will be a lot better afterwards and you will be up and running again. :D
