CAN'T GET WICKETS

hey
i have been bowling pretty well in practices and in games also but im not picking as many wickets as i should. people tell me just keep bowling right line and length but i have tried that...and i change my length to a little short of length...it there anything else i should be doing that will help me get more wicket...

how old are? if ur pretty young i would just recommend to bowl straight lots of young ppl have difficulty playing straight.

well i am 15...but i play in Houston, texas so there is only adult league and most pplayers are adult...i pick up 2 wickets almost every game but cant cross that 2wicket mark....i bowl pretty fast also...prob in lower upper 70 and lower 80.

mmmm thats a tough one if u were playing with 15 year olds i would say bowl straight and yorkers but if ur playing with adults u should use variations and very the line and length and 2 wickets pergame isnt that bad

Work to a plan. Try things like swinging 4 balls away, then bring the 5th back in. Use bouncers, yorkers and set fields that make the batsman take a risk.

The best way to get a wicket is to create pressure, slow the scoring rate down and make the batting team take risks. If you're picking up 2 wickets a game then that is not bad going. Keep on doing the basics right and the 5 wicket haul will come.

What sort of games do you play? 50 over?

An average strike rate is about 1 wicket every 60 balls, so to take 2 in 48 is good going!

It can be hard going in limited overs cricket as you do only get a few overs with which to pick up wickets, the key is to make sure you give yourself every chance to do so.

Have you ever though of bowling a 4 over spell at the start and then another 4 over spell at the end? If you can bowl it at a good rate you may have the chance of easy wickets at the end of the innings.

yes i try to make the batsmen make mistakes for example i keep the ball a little short of the lenght outside off stumps...then there is a chance for a knick but yea i will try all these things this week.

getting 2 wickets in a game is quite good and u should stick with what u r doing, i dont average 2 wickets a match so u must be bowling well

Fast bowler, Its wierd that I also fall under the exact same category as you. I am considered as one of the best bowlers in the league and most batsman find it tough to score runs off my bowling. However, I am not among the top wicket takers. (same 2 per match) and I see other bowlers who are not good picking up 4 wicket and 5 wicket haul pretty commonly.

However, when I try something new like an offcutter or inswinger apart from my usual outswingers, I go for runs.

I understand 2 per match is decent enough but I am looking at more than that to help my team establish the dominance earlier in the game.

Yeh it's pretty much like that in juniors, the good bowlers usually go for hardly any runs but when the poor bowlers come on, the batsman try to hit them out of the ground and get caught, resulting in them getting a bag of wickets. I don't know whether you play juniors, but that's just what I've found out.

AnebeSivam dude thats the exact same thing that happens to me. Im not the best bowlers in the league, some bowlers who are alot older than me and have alot of experience are alot better and they do well but i want to be in among the best. it really frustrates me that i cant get past 2 wickets.

To both fastbowler and AnbeSivam you have to start thinking about what you're doing out in the middle.

Do you try to analyse each batsman to see what their weaknesses may be and try to bowl to them? Set fields to restrict runs and make them take chances, you'll often find that once you've taken a wicket after keeping things tight, 2 or 3 will quickly fall.

Practice a a few different ways of bowling a slower ball in the nets, as well as you normal swing and cutters. Only use them in a match when you feel you have them mastered, otherwise you'll more than likely go for runs.

Practice varying you're length, so you can drop in the bouncer or yorker, again it'll need to be worked on in the nets but it will reap rewards in the middle.

make sure dat u don't just bowl da same delivery every ball and do vary wat u bowl often, also think about wat u want 2 bowl (line, length and pace) which u can do by examining da batsmen and then u will get more than 2 wickets.

hopefully this can help u as this is wat my coaches hav told me.

I have to say its the same in my part

the reason is that at your/any kids batsmen may be NOT GOOD ENOUGH to play you and play and miss/edge/uncomfortable

I also bet you tend to get the best oin the team on the opposition out? am I correct?

Yes.

Thats in a way true.

Sometimes I get the best 2 out and after that I struggle hard to get my third week. However, I try to bowl the same good line and length. When I try different, I go for runs.

Last weekend, I got 3 wickets. :)

My best bowling in terms of wickets so far and it is hard to believe that I havent picked up 4 wickets in a match even though I have bowled much better than last week. :-(

FreddieW makes a good point, sometimes you may be bowling too well! It seems that mostly the good bowler will be consistent and pick up 2 or 3 wickets a match but the average so so bowler will have a good day and get 5.

yea u r right...i did get the 2 openers out...i have a game this sunday and i will use all these things and try to get atleast 3 wickets.

Most of all try to think positive. You are in control of the game and you'll decide when things happen.

Sounds weird but backing yourself to win is one of the first steps to winning.

Also, try to visualise your over, think where the ball is going and how you're going to get wickets. Rehearse it in your mind and it will be easier when you have to do it for real.

Just do what you do, stick with it and the wickets will come.

The saying 'crap gets wickets' is right a lot of the time, for example it's often the less good bowler who comes on after a good spell by a good bowler that'll pick up wicket or a bad ball at the end of a tight over. In the first game last season I bowled ok and got a 5-fer but it was the bad balls that got wickets, as batsmen tried (and failed) to attack them. The next game I bowled much tighter and didn't get a wicket - might've been something to do with 6 dropped catches as well but you get the idea!
