Gents, Ash Russell could genuinely not be dismissed this season if he puts his mind to his cricket. Made 600+in Senior Div last year in a quality comp, look out bowlers.

Yeah he is class, opposition should focus on getting the other 9 scalps and not worry about Russel. I see Merl's mate Ernst has secured a Guernsey in the Flag favorites as has some young talent which is good to see names as T.brisbane, J.McConville and M.Allamby who i believe has been a Uniting junior and is now making his debut at 16 years old.

Interesting to see such names as T.Backman, A.Zaia & C.Manakis in the seconds!

Sounds like Pup is building quite the fan base.

Can anyone confirm that mycricket is correct re: Union v Asp/Edi? RSL bowled out for 62 and defended it by the barest of margins. Pretty impressive result if true. Must've been quite the green top!

Moorabbin West easy winners today. Might have to knee cap Wallace before we next play.... Clint wasn't happy to be outed on the field, but had a cameo at the end.

Why would that not be true? Scared out at HW? Asp Edi are building an impressive list and if Tonkin refuses the $$$ on offer at Chelsea they will play off in the finals on his skills alone.

I'm sure most Woolnough teams are trembling at the thought of a batting line up that can be bowled out for 63. Even more so when they find out that the chief destroyers were Morrell & Wilson who aren't new faces. Methinks most teams will be looking fwd to playing any team that can be bowled out for such low scores. They'd also be naive to think it will happen again so easily.

Evening All,

Surprise surprise no surprise really Barrack,Hiliary and the henchmen again fail to put scores in the Sunday papers.

Jimmy must be off at some rock concert as no weekly highlights to be found from him either, so as part of the Merlot Full Bottle I have trawled through My cricket to extract the scores with a few surprises.

Here goes the Merlot Full Bottle.

LONGY

Le Page Park 8/12 too good for the newly promoted two blues 106.McConchie on fire early with 31 and 4/27 with a cameo by young gun Mentiplay 30 will put a smile on his sad saints face!!

The Brady Rd Millionaires 7/145 defeated a sub par golfers 7/108.The child with a duck and the cricketer of the year Russell 65 not out.
East Sandy 6/156 as usual beat ANA 8/133 with Sugar 4 not out and 2/29 the only thing worth mentioning as usual the Duncan st duds have yet again not up dated my cricket and continue to get away with it!!
Elwood 6/152 defeated the Highway great pretenders 8/150 with Merl jumping off his Beach Boys far too early with Moose 44 and the Alphabet 36 not being enough to kick sand in the face of General Bunting and the boys.

The Patterson Rd cowboys 5/131 with one D.Frew out of or never in retirement def Slim's mob 127.

All I can tell you is that the Machine ran out of gas with some pommy recruit doing the damage for the ANTS and getting them over the line.Again nothing on my cricket just not good enough from either mob!!!

WOOLY

Last year's easybeats from gold cap park 5/172 def ANA 4/167 but who cares.

Bootsy's boys 2/125 in a canter against Uncle Mick's mob 9/112.

Wallett Park flexing their muscles 2/166 def Hamp Utd 8/163.

Vinnies Mob 4/198 gave Cluden a mother of a hiding in what will be a long season with a paltry 63.

The RSL showed a bit of Anzac spirit in defending 62 by dismissing the highway great pretender for 61!!!AGerdan also out of retirement while McLennan 3/6 took more wickets than the runs he made!!!

Merl's own who I am declaring early with a few of their shattered footballers hoping to go one better in the cricket Chelsea Heights 5/168 def Bent Utg 147.

I will post a separate post for round one of the Merlot Horlicks Trophy with the personally good news that Merl is off to a flying start and is looking down on the field!!!

until next time.... vino sipping poster... keep searching... Prof Merlot

Evening All again with the all important tipping results that will make MC Hammer eat his words about the Great Merlot's organisational and tipping ability skills.

Good to see Clocker off the bottom and Brudes and no fox giving Merl something to think about.A slow start for defending champ Vinnie while the runner up PDog is probably too drunk to even know his score.

Luke Manders for ESBC was impressive saturday knocked up a 80 odd and picked up 2 of the first 4 wickets on Saturday. Brilliant start by the woods in rolling over the Union and Carnegie South with the surprise upset of beating the Machine. Damien Krotofil has really stacked it on. Omega came up short with M.Reid brilliant and a great performance by Omega junior in Charlie Yanni with 43 who at 27 needs to step up now for the Ommies. Uniting never in doubt on a slow outfield bowlers saved the batsman bacon with Ash Russel super out for 65 & Surridge appears set for some time on the sidelines due to inj. I am not sure were the goss has come from about Ernst but from what i have heard the club can't be any happier to have him back.

Not a encouraging start by Highett west at all with the other West mob to strong, Washington Park look good on Saturday and will be up there with Jewell opposing himself for the Parkers. A brilliant showing from Omegas 2ndX1 way to strong against a disappointing Cluden.

It is great to have the season away and some good surprises on Saturday with some under dogs getting up to great start.

until then, Dino.......dripping......Toaster

Sorry lads, a busy weekend and the usual tardiness with results from clubs for first week.

REDBACKS BITE BACK
Carnegie South opened up their season with a win against the odds against last season’s runners up and Redbacks nemesis Mackie in the first round of Longmuir Shields cricket.
The Machine have had the wood on The Spiders over the last four seasons giving them some fearful floggings but it was revenge time as Carnegie South posted a reasonable 146 in their turn at the crease. New recruit David Fisher impressed with an excellent 46 and Kev Pereira provided the backbone with a resilient 31 as their team reached 2/102 before collapsing late in their quest for quick runs. Derek Kinsella was the cause for their concern as he tore through the middle and late order to bag 5/29.
Mackie started well enough and plenty of their good players got starts but not one was able to turn their start into an innings of substance and thanks to veteran paceman Glenn Gallagher (3/17) and a steady performance from the rest of the attack, Mackie were restricted to 9/129 to start their season on the back foot.
West Bentleigh came back from the dead twice against Omega to win their clash. Omega started in bright and breezy fashion reaching 2/89 with Charlie Yanni (43) doing much of the damage before Joey “Hiho” Silver (3/17) and Marc “Chopper” Reid (3/28) were able to peg them back and curtail the innings at 127. West started in horrific fashion being 4/16 but Chris Pap (23) got them heading in the right direction and then their two great all-rounders Jack McLeod (53*) and Reid (30*) got together and guided them all the way home despite a great spell from Chris Clement (2/9 off 9 overs).
Le Page Park started on a winning note also staving off Hampton Central in their return to the top grade. The Panthers posted a moderate 9/122 with Steve McConchie (31) and Pete Mentiplay (30) doing best but then McConchie (4/27) tore the heart out of the Two-Blues top order reducing them to 5/16 before they fought back to manage 106 as Michael Knight (4/10) bowled with good pace to finish the back end of the innings off and give Le Page a 16 run win.
East Sandringham started their quest for nine premierships in ten years off well with a sound win over Bentleigh ANA. They were in strife early at 3/10 and had a chance been take early in Luke Manders innings it could have been even worse for East but Manders survived and proceeded to bat through the innings making a brilliant unbeaten 84. He was well supported by another player returning to action for the club in Shaun Pledger (27) but even so the final tally of 6/156 did not look insurmountable for ANA. Manders had not finished however and grabbed two wickets in as many overs at the start of ANA’s innings and they were soon 4/18 and whilst Stuart Campbell (34) and Bryce Jansz (34) battled hard they were never really in the game from that point on as Luke Dallas (3/17) applied the brakes through the middle of the innings.
Heavily fancied Bentleigh Uniting had a solid win against Kingston Heath. The Heath bowlers were on top early and were very consistent throughout the Uniting innings but an impressive display from Ash Russell (65) and some late innings power from Damien Britt (32*) saw their team finish at 7/145. The Golfers needed a quick start and although Uniting paceman Surridge broke down early the challengers were never really able to get their innings going and were held to 7/108.
There was a thriller played at Elwood with the home team eventually getting the points over Brighton Union. Union batted well enough knocking up 8/150 in their turn at the wicket with skipper Ivan Delac (44) and crack recruit and former Elwood leader Ano Apostolopoulos (36) combining well but the under rated Woods (6/152) responded with a better effort to track down the runs with half a dozen overs still in the bank.
So, the opening round of the season saw a couple of upsets, a couple of relatively comfortable wins and a couple of close finishes and an exciting season of CMCA crickets looms.

Army,
Good first up win for the Wanderers against a pretty reasonable Uniting team.Must have been an entertaining day's cricket with 421 runs being scored. Is Dolby going to be available all season?

I'll beg to differ with Mr.Dingels. I thought we made an encouraging start. We didn't bat to one day conditions and found ourselves trying to set a target a bit too late instead losing wickets. Not a desirabe result, but definitely an encouraging one. Moorabbin West's bowling attack would now lay claim to the best attack in the grade - obviously without seeing Chelsea Heights & Washington Park. Could do with a decent spinner - not that one was required on the weekend, but Bott, Worker, Wallace, Aydin & Bowring will cause a lot of headaches and should have them thereabouts again.

Hugh Nicholson very stiff not to start in the ones for carnegie but surely after a solid 79 runs he will be a definite starter for the redbacks? Heard talk of ANA approaching Nicholson at start of season offering him apprentiship to play. ANA surely heartbroken at not picking up the young gun? Thoughts?
