Cut Shot

Today I ground my way to 11, then was caught on a cut shot that I got under but just not enough. Does anyone have a tip for a short batsman (5 ' 8" ish) on keep cut shots down?

Any tips would be helpful.:)

Re: Cut Shot

Well you probably should try and get the hands above the ball and cut down on it. Rolling the wrists is also important. Not much else to say other than practise

Re: Cut Shot

I reckon if your short and you can't get 'above' those bouncy balls.....don't cut at all. Take away that risk element from your game and when a skiddy bowler or a bowler than doesn't get much bounce comes on, get above the ball and smother it for four :D! By the way, for an example, on the weekend in the opposing team, instead of cutting wideish balls, he late cutt-ed (if that is a word) them and got a whole heap of runs doin that.

Re: Cut Shot

Thanks Kevin Sampath, but the cut shot is one of my best run scoring shots, this pitch was extremely bouncy as well, I should of kept my head, but cant help thinking i went out on a decent shot.

Re: Cut Shot

Yeah, I got caught from playing a cut today. Didn't listen to my own advice :p. Probably should've kept my head as well, was quite comfortable before that

The cut shot, while extremely profitable, is also very risky, so just watch the ball when you play it and roll the wrists and you should be right

Re: Cut Shot

ouch jimmy, and yeh, I think a lot of batsman who are feeling comfortable get out playing that shot.

Re: Cut Shot

I find there are too ways to play the cut shot and depending on the speed of the bowler. (I will say that I am an attacking batsman though)

For the bowler that has some serious pace behind them (I am talking 80mph plus) I find that if there is no fly slip, third man or deep point I will through my whole house at the ball and will intentionally flay it over the top. If they are going to bowl you a terrible ball that short and wide then it deserves to be hit for 4 or 6. But if they have a field out there big no no.

For the mediums bowlers and down I will play the conventional cut shot. A lot more time, can take the bat from High to Low and roll the wrists on it.

Just work on it in the nets, ask a team mate to through short balls wide but mix them up with an ocassional one at the body to make sure you aren't just pre-meditating your cut shot.

Good luck

Re: Cut Shot

The rolling your wrists tip is spot on.

I would do this while playing almost to the point of exaggeration i.e. well after you feel contact with the ball.

Re: Cut Shot

When I play a cut shot, I can't seem to roll my wrists over it, I sort of roll them backwards, sending the ball behind square, but while doing this naturaly movement I cant seem to roll my wrists OVER the ball, if you get what I mean.

Re: Cut Shot

1) get your hands above the ball , this will naturally roll your wrists over the top off the ball at impact . If not you will always hit the ball at a catchable height unless you go right over the top . If you wrists roll backwards it means they are under the ball .
2) don't try to hit the ball too hard , this throws you off balance and you will most likely miss the ball , mistime it or again hit the ball in the air .
3) hold a side on position ( this comes with balance and not trying to hit it too hard ) and play the ball as late as possible , if you do this 9/10 times the ball will be timed and go straight to ground .

Re: Cut Shot

Yes either get underneath it and hit it over point to 3rd man region or jump on your toes and try playing the shot, needs practice though! Watch good batsman all do it, just jump back but on their toes just to get over the ball so it goes to ground. Youtube it lol. And rolling the wrists is very important and controlling the shot and the rolling with the bottom hand. And lean into it, like lots of people including myself, when jumping onto your back foot to cut sometimes lean back, leaning into it is very important when trying to hit along the ground.
