Darwin & District Cricket - 2010

Re: Darwin & District Cricket - 2010

PINT - Pint Cricket Club

PINT always get to the big show, but have failed to deliver. After a slow start last season, they steam rolled their way through the rest of the season to be outright second favourites to win the flag but failed at the final hurdle for the second year running. Simon Lavers is captain (unconfirmed) and coach is J. Robbins (unconfirmed).

One of the main reasons for their success is quick man Hodgson (Ralph Wiese Medallist), who has the ability of picking up bags of wickets week in week out. Their down point in 2009 season was their batting, with the majority of the top order struggling to make runs. Lavers will be looking for big runs, while the return of Francis will stabilise the middle order considerably. They will be without experienced NT keeper Martin Brown for a few games who's quality will be missed.

Apparently they've picked up a few Victorian country/sub-district cricketers (mostly batsmen) so their impact is yet to be determined. Can see PINT starting off slowly again and snowballing into a top four finish.

Prediction;
T20: 5th
One Day Comp: 6th
Two Day Comp: 1st or 2nd

Players to watch: Lavers, Hodgson & Francis

In: C. Francis (SA)
Out: R. Meyers (QLD),

Re: Darwin & District Cricket - 2010

Waratah - MyCricket: Waratah

Last year's Premiers, Waratah, will have to dig deep to get back to the top. Losing a few key players, they'll need their experienced men in Lawrence (captain/coach) and Gardiner to lead the way. Making all three finals for each format, they should be happy with making one in 2010.

Gardiner one of if not the stand out bats of the competition, had an exceptional run for the second half amassing four centuries in the last six matches, he was pivotal at number three and with SA recruit Isiah Borgas coming in, they could cause the bowlers some heartache.

If Arbon can replicate the batting form from the one day matches last season and young quicks in the Evans brothers support Lawrence, Tahs may still have a shot at finals cricket. Their first few games will determine how their season fairs, early wins are crucial.

Prediction;
T20: 6th
One Day Comp: 6th
Two Day Comp: 5th or 6th

Players to watch: Gardiner, Borgas & Lawrence

In: I. Borgas (SA)
Out: B. Casson (NSW), R. Green (VIC), C. Robb (WA), B. Schmulian (NZ) (unconfirmed)

Round 1 - Saturday 17th April
PINT v Darwin - Marrara (1)
Southern Districts v Palmerston - Fred's Pass
Nightcliff v Waratah - Nightcliff Oval
Tracy Village v BYE

The weather isn't looking favourable but there is a chance that at least two of the three matches will take place, meaning the round will still go ahead.

PINT take on Darwin at home, which should be a good opener for both teams to see where they are at. With the weather looking as it is, the toss shouldn't favour either team. A score of 200 plus is generally enough to get you over the line in the last few years at Marrara.

Southern Districts host Palmerston and from all reports, the wicket is ready to go. Palmerston should have an easy win with four of the Districts players not being available until round four.

The match of the round is Nightcliff and Waratah. Nightcliff had most of their imports arrive yesterday (the coaching indicating seven to 10 players) which means the Tigers may have some acclimatisation issues. Nightcliff to be one from one.

Re: Darwin & District Cricket - 2010

Nightcliff have up to 10 imports??? Who will be their solitary local player i wonder? Should be intersting to see how they go this season, and if their recruiting drive will upset their loyal players who may look for another home...

Tigers coast to big win over Waratahs | Northern Territory News | Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia | ntnews.com.au

Round 1 - Saturday 17th April
PINT 7/187 defeated Darwin 161 - Marrara (1)
Southern Districts 149 defeated by Palmerston 6/150 - Fred's Pass
Nightcliff 3/141 defeated Waratah 140 - Nightcliff Oval
Tracy Village v BYE

Nothing really out of the ordinary, all games had some inaccurate bowling (sundries making handy contributions) and the wickets from all reports played pretty slowly in overcast conditions. PINT/Darwin game was rain affected.

Several games in the lower grades were also washed out and more than likely a few today in the Sunday competition.

Yes NCC B grade where keen for a game and got the impression that everything was tried by their opp, to avoid a games of cricket...Funny how Ncc got a wicket up and played well.

Re: Darwin & District Cricket - 2010

I heard there was this stuff falling from the sky down at Gardens.

The only reason the PINT/Darwin game wasn't washed out was because of full pitch covers and the ground staff being there the whole day.

Re: Darwin & District Cricket - 2010

Round 2 - Saturday 24th April
PINT v BYE
Southern Districts v Waratah - Fred's Pass
Nightcliff v Darwin - Nightcliff Oval
Palmerston v Tracy Village -Woodroffe Oval

Going on early form, Tahs and Districts could be the battle for the spoon. Waratah should pick up their first win of the season in a low scoring affair.

Nightcliff had a convincing first up win on a tradition Nightcliff wicket (spinners picking up 9 of the 10 wickets to fall in the Waratah innings) and nothing less will be expected this week. A score around 200 would be hard to get and taking advantage of the new ball crucial in getting off to a good start. Darwin still have plenty of work to do with the talent there but not quite putting it together. Should be a close game with Nightcliff just getting home.

Palmerston host Tracy Village in what should be another close game. TV's first outing and a lot will be expected while Palmerston can get their season well in truly on the way with a win against the OD Premiers. The two teams have had closely contested battles over the last few years and this one shouldn't be any different. Palmerston lose Shane Chatto (one game cameo) after his match winning innings last week. Palmerston should make it two from two.

Monday then sees the first round of the T20 matches, which in change from previous years formats, there will be only two round matches (down from three) and they will take place at Marrara. In general, only a few teams have got behind the format and no club has really made it into what it has meant to be. Hopefully the change sees the best teams on the park, some spectators/atmosphere and fence clearing. The matches are scheduled for a 11:00am and 2:30pm start.

Win one match and play off for 3rd/4th, win two matches and play in the GF.

Round 1 - Monday 26th April
Tracy Village v Palmerston - Marrara (1)
PINT v Darwin - Marrara (2)
Southern Districts v Nightcliff - Marrara (1)
N.T.I.S. v Waratah - Marrara (2)

Round 2 - Sunday 2nd May
Nightcliff v Palmerston - Marrara (1)
Waratah v Southern Districts - Marrara (2)
N.T.I.S. v Darwin - Marrara (1)
Tracy Village v PINT - Marrara (2)

Finals - Monday 3rd May
FINAL Game 1 - 3 v 4 Game 2 - FINAL 1 v 2

Re: Darwin & District Cricket - 2010

Just to set the record straight, TVCC declined their draft pick as we did indeed want another bowler. We had also recruited well enough that we didn't need the extra player, nor did we wish to accept too many "imports" and deny our juniors a spot in the Premier Grade. Despite what clubs think, we do not financially assist many imports at all - people choose Tracy Village because of it's facilities, (including turf training decks), and administration.

That said, the comments in this forum have been largely fair and intelligent about all the clubs.

Re: Darwin & District Cricket - 2010

why is it the clubs arent behind the twenty 20 concept. i would imagine with the facilities you guys have at marrara it would b a great day had by all. with lots of exciting cricket to watch would b a good day to take the family down

I think it has a fair bit to do with the Darwin lifestyle/attitude (call it what you will) and the fact that although many of the players love their cricket, they want to also enjoy a day off to spend with family. To many, a Sunday or a long weekend are the only times away from work/cricket to do this.

I think enough has been said on this topic. Lets move on!

NT Cricket and the clubs do virtually nothing to promote the event. The competition format is set-up poorly as well with the concept of T20's being that it wasn't a full day event, so it took up an evening of your time, instead the host club, has to put on two matches which then turns into a full day's work.

Along with that, there is no innovation to go with the matches(ie most southern competitions attempt to bring a bit of atmosphere to match by the way of music, commentary, BBQ's and so on, along with promoting the event).

I guess the main issue as a whole is clubs working together with NT Cricket (rather than attempting to undermine it) while also working with their players to support cricketing events and opportunities so that the sport can progress and remain viable in the NT. Which should then lead to future opportunities for clubs, players and supporters.

Nightcliff would be odds on to take the T20 competition after fielding a relatively full strength side, but the competition is still open. As long as Darwin beat NTIS and Nightcliff beat Palmerston, then one win could still get you through to the T20 Cup with a superior run rate.

Re: Darwin & District Cricket - 2010

Round 3 - Saturday 1st May
Southern Districts v BYE
Darwin v Waratah - Kahlin Oval
PINT v Palmerston - Marrara (1)
Tracy Village v Nightcliff - Tracy Village Oval

Round three sees the potential for the season to start slipping away for several clubs. Darwin and Waratah play each other in a must win game. After two poor performances, the Eagles need their senior players to step up while Tahs will be relying on the same to get them the points. Hartney is out for Darwin. Should be a real test for both sides, Darwin should get their first win on the board.

Palmerston win here and they can start pencilling themselves in for the OD final. After a tight match with Tracy Village and an inform Short, the Power should be able to take care of PINT who are coming back from a week off. PINT have lost Mitchell and Brown which should see their bowling and batting depth severely tested. Palmerston should be able to roll over them unless Lavers produces something special.

Nightcliff travel to an unhappy hunting ground against nemesis Tracy Village. After being tested last week by an inept Darwin, they'll need to be switched on against the Villagers. SACA recruit Cranmer was reported for the Tigers last week and will more than likely receive a slap on the wrist. Village are chance if they get early wickets, otherwise they'll need to set a big total against the strongest bowling attack in the competition. Nightcliff to be too strong.
