Darwin & District Cricket - 2012

Just a small one to start off with, will post a larger update later. Most clubs are having their sign on days in the next couple of weeks and first training sessions beginning shortly. First match is scheduled for the 14th April.

A few rumours floating around regarding imports and so on.

Mark Cosgrove will play a couple of games for PINT if his visa falls through which means he can't renew his contract with Glamorgan.

Latest news is that the draw has changed and will feature a full round of OD's, T20's and Two Day matches, all for match points and each competition will have a flag, meaning the return of the triple crown.

Reported players movements are that Time Paine maybe making an appearance in Darwin, while TV and Tahs are relying heavily on imports this season. All teams have had their sign on days and have begun pre-season.

Season launch is on Wednesday 11th April. Will look at doing team reviews in early April.

Just a round up of what is going on so far;

Southern Districts - Lost Bell, coach King and Pemble (knee injury)

TV - Lost McDermott, Johnstone & Cachopa, potentially no Crowe, Lycett and Cooper

Waratah - Gardiner is said to be the only remaining player from last season

Palmerston - Just have relatively the same side but without the draftees, Chatto and Toner

Nightcliff - Calkin back as player/coach.

PINT - Maybe a couple of guys from NSW that Berry knows

Darwin - Doolan coach, Briggs back and a couple of imports from either QLD or VIC.

Few NZers potentially coming over from Northern Districts.

Fair chat, though it would be good to see NTC indicating the start of the season is only 3 weeks off, whether it be through social media or on it's website.

Hasn't Piercy already played for the Tigers?

Lycett is rumoured to be looking at other clubs, while Crowe is apparently playing after there being some indication that he wouldn't. Cachopa may comeback mid-season for TV. Bell has officially signed with PINT.

Weather is still hanging about, hopefully clears up in the next week or two.

Will be interesting to see how they pick the strike team this year! Full of B grade darwin players A grade will have more imports then darwin players! a points system has to be looked at by NT cricket before the comp goes under!

Bell has left districts has he! Maybe the new Piercy haha! No pemble no king and no bell the crocs must have done a good clean out and starting freash good on em! After winning club champtionship i thought key players would stay! i thought wrong! anyway the imports comp in 2012 should be a good one

Sounds like TV, Tahs and DCC have all got the cheque books out, followed closely by Pint? Anything from the others? You're right, NT Cricket could have something on their hands if it is the 2012 imports comp!

how can the pooftahs have a sign on day without any of their senior list??? absolute joke they are should be banned till they get a solid junior base up and operational.

Need at least 2 junior sides for a A-Grade side! Tahs are not a Club until they have juniors! So Nightcliff Palmo and SD only teams without the Cheque book out no wonder bell left, had one good week of cricket and wants coin cop that crocs!!!! NC would be paying Calkin Massive coin!

Not really, Calkin is not like that. Like all players tho, they just want to be looked after and not have to stress while up here. Calkin has a trade and worked pretty hard while he was here last time and made his own coin, paid his own way etc. I assume now as a coach he would get some coin but that role at most if not all clubs now is a paid role. apart from flights and waiving of club fees most players that come up fund themselves. Club do help them get jobs and shared accom etc.

The majority of players at DCC will have played a season or more, so I don't see how there is speculation that we'll be equal to TV or WCC. The talk about imports coming in happens every year, the only side that it was significantly successful for result of it was TV back in 2007 and Tahs in 2009.

Bell left because he lives in Nightcliff, apparently Districts were throwing the coin at him to get him to stay. King is still with Districts this season as well.

Hi Lads, great to have found this informative site and get some local gossip on the cricket in Darwin. I too have heard the usual rumours bouncing around and Waratahs and TV are certainly heavily recruiting making it look a little silly the competition, it sounds like from there both Pints and Darwin have good local players and have topped up with quite a few interstate players. Palmerston have plenty of depth and have added two or three to make them very competitive whilst Nightcliff do have Calkin and he is keen to develop his coaching apparently as well, but he alone won't be able to lift them. Poor old Southern Districts have been hurt by losing Bell and a couple of others and it may be a long year for them unless they find a player or two very soon. Your thoughts guys?

how could you say anything about poor old anyone, when we as cricketers are apparently playing amateur sports.... accept we are getting closer to UK every year.

Pint - Just steal good players from other clubs, good on them
Palmerston - have a 20,000 population base to pick from and lower socially econominc base more likely to stay in palmo forever... so good on them
Nightcliff - Just poor to poor to play silly buggers with test players
Districts - More interested in how close to the club you can get to smoke dope....

so that aboyut sums up the real clubs in darwin, not the ones full of imports....

Come on Barry Bonds, you can't rate four out of the seven clubs. Successful juniors is as much a yard stick for determining what value a club adds to the competition. There is no problem with imports if it compliments what you've got coming through the ranks, its when clubs don't invest in their juniors at all and focus on importing players that aren't going to be long term/one season only imports. The issue is the clubs need to attract and maintain both their senior and junior base and attempt to rectify the issues surrounding it.

PINT - Reasonably successful in maintaining that harmony with juniors into long term senior players
Palmerston - Could be a lot stronger but as pointed out by Bonds, they generally stay long term players or drop off the radar due to their location
Nightcliff - Have improved their juniors greatly but haven't been able to translate that into the senior playing group due to the off/on field culture?
Southern Districts - Strong junior base but once they reach mature age, move to the city and/or prefer fishing, shooting and drinking to playing cricket and potentially same issues as NCC with the culture at the club among the senior playing group.
Tracy Village - Poor junior base and lost potential long term players like Paul Carbone for example who wasn't going to keep in the A grade due to McDermott being unwilling to stand down last season as the number one keeper. McDermott isn't playing this season and Carbone has won a flag with Palmerston in his first year.
Darwin - Good junior base but tend to lose players to schooling/studying interstate.
Waratah - No junior base and have to recruit heavily every year to stay alive in the A grade.

Did you not see hwat I said. The real clubs in darwin??

Darwin cricket club was a proud club shame about the leadership.
Nightcliff has always kept things in the family, but now the family is gone, and is being run by friends of the family.
Districts should be better but if you look at a few of thier older players you would work out why they are not.
Tracy...... well idiots would be the simple terms, though there is some good blokes there just out weighed by idiots
Tahs, do they even have anyone who played jnr cricket actually playing for them?
Pint - Party boys who fall of the wagon and distroy pitches.
Palmo - is the powerhouse they should be, with NT reps playing B grade.

It is easy to blame clubs for importing all these players, So I will, wondering if and when we will actually see a real darwin A grade comp, not some winter training camp for over payed pretty boys from down south?
