Diving

Re: Diving

Do you have access to a five-a-side football goal? That's the ideal area you should be looking to dive in. Anything bigger than that and you're struggling to reach it. Stand in the middle and get someone to try and throw the ball past you from about 12 yards out - not just throw it to you, genuinely try to throw it past you. If you've not got access to one, just mark out an area about 3.5m wide and use that.

Re: Diving

i dont really struggle with diving too much. i find its more instinctive than anything! just make sure your balance is correct and you launch on the correct foot!

Re: Diving

I just read Nightvision's article on harrowdrive again - very good read with a lot of info. It really seems though that it is a reflex thing - as Jason says if you have time to think about it then you shouldn't be diving. So the key would be to practice it so much that it gets ingrained - muscle memory basically. I think Liz's tip with using the matresses during indoor nets would be good for this - that way you can practice it until you get the landing right without getting battered :D

I'd like to apologize for dragging this issue, but this thread has just come to my attention so I'd just like to say a few things.

Re: Diving

I don't quite get the problem with diving. I mean anyone can just fling themselves to one side surely? Hardly a hard technique to comprehend.

I'm not having a go at anyone by saying that.

Re: Diving

Flinging yourself to one side isn't the issue - the problem is trying to catch a ball while in free-fall and then land in such a way that you don't crack a few ribs and spill the ball

Maybe this thread should be called "landing" instead of "diving" :D

Re: Diving

Exactly, Ed - like Wolf said, any idiot can throw himself sideways, but it does take a fair amount of skill and agility to do it and land without breaking/squashing something whilst still holding the ball. Anyone who's ever mucked up a dive and landed on their nads will tell you it's up there with the very worst of pain. Plus it's at least a 2 on the SIDS scale! (Read my blog if you don't get that one. ;))

As for landing on your back, are you mad?! That's about the very best way to do yourself a nasty injury - jarring your back or whacking the back of your head on the floor are both VERY possible by landing a dive on your back.

Re: Diving

lol

he says when the ball flys past the batsmen at 80mph down the legside! try catching them blind. and i'm the one who gets the blame if it goes for byes lol

i pride myself on being able to catch every ball if not stop them!

I've found another way of practising my diving catches, whilst incorporating decent excercise at the same time. Our back-garden has a trampoline, which is directly behind the house, meaning I can throw a softish ball against the house and then dive about on the trampoline and catch the ball. Brilliant fun, good practise, and a pretty good workout for a 20 minute burst of excercise. My 1 handed left handed catches are a treat now. Catchings really improving this season :D
