England in South Africa

Re: England in South Africa

Can't understand what has happened to South Africa, on the whole the England team doesn't strike me as a particularly fearsome ODI team. South Africa really need to pull their finger out and fight to draw this series at 2-2.

South Africa looked like a fine tuned machine against us in the ODI's earlier this year winning the combined series 7-3.

Re: England in South Africa

Some teams have weeknesses against others. England looks pretty good when playing certain countries in certain places, but not against others.

Re: England in South Africa

Jimmy Anderson is a cool guy and a superb bowler, he will single-handedly hoist England to victory over the wretched Proteas

Re: England in South Africa

Guys have a look at history the English in general have a decent tour while in South Africa, the main thing as I wrote on my blog is that inconsistency have become the order of the day and also that Kallis's injury have shown the lack of performance from Albie Morkel, Dale Steyn etc.

The great sides have the ability to adapt to the conditions, I think most if not all would have scored heavily on Friday night at Newlands. The wickets are anything but hard and fast of the past and the English batting has improved via an inform Strauss, KP, Collingwood and Trott.. (I suspect Trott is going to have a very good tour).

The fact is that this is going to put the pressure on certain players and some will get the boot (Duminy might not play on Friday to make way for Gibbs etc) and Mickey Arthur will be needing to earn his salary for a change.

Re: England in South Africa

After England won the one day series now the test series has begun

England have gone back to the 4 bowlers, 6 batsman make up of the team and have South Africa 159/4 on day 1 after putting them in

Also interesting to note the referall system is being used but no hotspot

Re: England in South Africa

4/249 now, 2.3 overs left in the day. Jacques Kallis has 102 not out with Ashwell Prince scoring 45. JP Duminy has 36 not out currently in what has been a modest scoring pace set by South Africa.

Re: England in South Africa

4/262 at stumps. Kallis finished on 122 and was undefeated alongside Duminy with 38.

A good effort from South Africa considering the pitch favoured the bowlers early on. Things were looking fairly even at tea but South Africa have come out after that and put themselves in a good position thanks to Kallis who had played very well for his 112. They'll be eyeing off a score of better than 400 which would be a great score on this track.

As for England, they started well but let South Africa get away in the final session. Graeme Swann was really good for England and Stuart Broad also bowled well.

Day 2 looks as if it'll be a cracker.

Re: England in South Africa

@eddiesmith hotspot not being used as it costs too much (the free to air national broadcaster is feeding the images to the world) and supposedly due to the fact that there are only 8 cameras in the world that have the technology..

@ljp86 - mate I disagree with the fact that the wicket helped the bowlers in the morning .. the English I think is going to battle with a three pronged attack (Onions is carrying an injury I think and Broad lost rhythm in the afternoon sessions .. )

I think this could be a very long day in the field for the English tomorrow as Kallis might go big and Duminy could deal with the short stuff today.

The English made a blunder in bowling first at Centurion you bat first no matter what as the sun will bake down on the wicket and make it harder and more speedy as the match goes on..

Also Dale Steyn withdrew at the last minute due to a hamstring issue and gave Friedel De Wet his opportunity..

I sense tommorrow could be an interesting day and Trott, Collingwood,KP, Cook might have consider turing the arm over :)

Re: England in South Africa

The referall system is a joke if they cant use all the technology available, England referred 2 decisions that were both out but due to a lack of technology they stuck with the umpires decision

Although I thought it was funny that they say that the Review system can give 2 different results to the exact same ball as it often just says stick with the umpires decision whichever way he goes

As for the toss I thought I saw a stat that said 8 of the last 12 matches have been won by the team bowling first

Pitch was certainly doing a bit in the morning session, England would have fancied their chances having South Africa 3/93 when Prince was dismissed but Kallis and co pulled them out of trouble. England were disappointing after tea though, they could have really nailed South Africa for less than 300 but couldn't get the required breakthoughs.

Anyway, South Africa were bowled out for 418, Kallis only added eight runs to his overnight total before being dismissed for 120. Duminy scored 56, Boucher 49 and Harris 38 in what was an even but slow effort on day two. Graeme Swann impressed with the ball, taking 5/110, the third time he has taken five wickets or more in an innings. England reached 1/88 at stumps with Strauss not out on 44 and Trott with him on 18. Friedel de Wet, who is making his debut in this game took his first test wicket, that of Cook who edged to Boucher for 15.

Pretty even at the moment you'd think. Day three will go a long way to determing how this game is going to turn out. The pitch is pretty flat now so England will ceratinly like the wicket while South Africa need to find some wickets to ensure they'll have some sort of lead on first innings.

Re: England in South Africa

looks like its got draw written all over it atm, pretty even will depend on how england' middle order hold up but unless there is a major collapse on one side i can't see a result.

Re: England in South Africa

I think the draw result must be the betting mans friend at the moment.. South Africas scoring rate was not anything to write home about but England will have to counter the effect of 2 sun filled days in the field.

However - the reality is that England will have to press the self destructive button to make any result possible.

Re: England in South Africa

I like South Africas new referall tactics, hold a 2 minute mid pitch 'conference' pretending to be discussing whether to review but instead just take the odd glance to the dressing room and wait for the signal

Re: England in South Africa

Get real eddie, don't know what Broad was whinging about, it was dead plumb.

Is it really an issue if a side takes a few extra seconds to signal for the review?

Lets be real here.
