England Tour of the West Indies 2022.

England declare at 6/349 after 88.2 overs, a lead of 285.

West Indies will need 286 runs from 71 overs at 4.03 runs per over to win the test. Certainly doable on this deck but it has been hard to score for most of the test although the pitch is still playing fairly well with most of the wickets to fall in England's innings due to the batters trying to score quick runs.

West Indies will commence their second innings in a few minutes' time.

West Indies reach 0/4 from four overs at lunch on day five. A minimum of 67 overs left in the day with the Windies needing a further 282 runs to win at 4.21 runs per over. If the Windies can get a good platform that will help them in their chase in the final two sessions.

Mark Wood has also not taken to the field in those four overs so it seems unlikely he'll be available to bowl in the second innings which leaves England a bowler short at a minimum with question marks over Ben Stokes as well who is believe to be nursing a leg complaint.

Certainly an interesting couple of sessions coming up to end this test.

West Indies lost four wickets quite quickly during the middle session to give England some hope of claiming the match but Nkrumah Bonner and Jason Holder dug in to ensure West Indies got to 4/147 at stumps with the match ending in a draw. Jack Leach claimed 3/57 from 30.1 overs in the second innings to be the pick of the bowlers for England.

The series heads to Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados for the second test starting on Wednesday.

Poms denied Windies hold on for a draw. Doesnt that please Carlos.. better than losing.
Best for England Bairstow, Root with no stand out bowlers.
Best for Windies Bonner MOM, with good all round work from Holder. Jayden Seales one to watch.

England team for second Test: Zak Crawley, Alex Lees, Joe Root (c), Dan Lawrence, Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Foakes (wk), Chris Woakes, Craig Overton, Jack Leach, Saqib Mahmood

Pom attack in disarray. Wood and Robinson injured Mahmood comes in.

England team for second Test: Zak Crawley, Alex Lees, Joe Root (c), Dan Lawrence, Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Foakes (wk), Chris Woakes, Craig Overton, Jack Leach, Saqib Mahmood

I see they have Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, Jack Leach, Craig Overton, and Mahmood who is another spinner.

The second test between West Indies and England gets underway in less than 10 minutes time. West Indies go into the game unchanged while England have made two changes, Mark Wood is out with an elbow issue and has been replaced by Saqibd Mahmood who is on test debut while Craig Overton has fallen ill overnight with Matthew Fisher to come into the side to also make his debut.

West Indies XI: Kraigg Brathwaite*, John Campbell, Shamarh Brooks, Nkrumah Bonner, Jermaine Blackwood, Jason Holder, Joshua da Silva+, Alzarri Joseph, Kemar Roach, Veerasammy Permaul, Jayden Seales

England XI: Alex Lees, Zak Crawley, Joe Root*, Dan Lawrence, Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Foakes+, Chris Woakes, Matthew Fisher, Saqib Mahmood, Jack Leach

England have won the toss and will bat first. Early suggestions have been that this pitch will be more lively than the one at Antigua so we'll have to see how this one goes on day one.

England lose their first wicket, Zak Crawley edges a delivery behind to the keeper off Jayden Seales. It seamed away late and Crawley hung the bat out there, the ball nips the edge with Da Silva taking a comfortable catch behind the stumps.

England 1/4 from 3.1 overs.

Joe Root is back among the centuries with another overnite in Barbados. At stumps England were 3/244 with the skipper undefeated on 119. Dan Lawrence was dismissed late for a well compiled 91..
What ever happened to targeting a minimum 300 runs in a day. Seems to have gone out of fashion. Little wonder there are so many draws.

Play to begin fairly shortly on day two at Kensington Oval. The pitch doesn't seem to be doing much from what was seen on the first day.

West Indies started to session well to keep a lid on England with good lines and length but England well and truly owned the session, progressing to 3/369 at lunch, 78 of which was scored from the last 10 overs. Ben Stokes led the charge scoring 89 not out from 92 balls including four sixes while Joe Root has quietly progressed to 151. This is the 12th time an Englishman has made 150 runs or more in an innings which is a record, going past Sir Alastair Cook's previous mark of 11.

Not much to say about that session for West Indies although they haven't been helped by the pitch which has been slow and pretty flat, fairly similar to the deck seen at Antigua in the first test.

England will look to press on after lunch and I imagine there will some sort of declaration today.

England reached 9/507 before closing their innings in the final session, Ben Stokes reached his century, finishing with 120 while Joe Root was out shortly after lunch for 153. Chris Woakes scored a handy 41 as England racked up a fairly large total.

West Indies reached 1/71 at stumps with John Campbell the man out for four, falling to debutant Matt Fisher.

Just over halfway through the first session and West Indies are 3/101, Shamargh Brooks fell for 39 to Jack Leach while ben Stokes has just trapped Nkrumah Bonner LBW for nine. Kraigg Brathwaite remains not out on 40 with Jermaine Blackwood on zero not out.

West Indies reach 3/114 at lunch, Brathwaite has moved to 44 while Blackwood is seven not out. That was a grind for West Indies with 43 runs in the session from 27 overs. England claimed the wicket of Bonner when there may have been evidence that he hit the ball while Blackwood may have been out LBW but England chose not to review.

Certainly an interesting session with two more to come for the day's play.

West Indies reached 4.288 at stumps, trailing by 219 runs. Kraigg Brathwaite and Jermaine Blackwood were solid for the Windies for most of the day before Blackwood was given out LBW after padding up to part-time spinner Dan Lawrence for a very well made 102.

Brathwaite remains not out on 109 with nightwatchman Alzarri Joseph on four not out. Still a bit to do for the Windies with Brathwaite the key for them on day four as they look to erase the deficit.

In England team news, Mark Wood is out of the rest of the tour with an elbow injury and has been sent home to the UK for analysis. Wood is out of the IPL as well and is set to take an indefinite break from cricket in order to rectify the injury. Warwickshire's Liam Norwell will likely take Wood's place in the squad with the third test in Grenada next week.

England claim their first wicket of the day and it is the nightwatchman, Joseph. The cut shot proves his undoing, it was cut hard but straight to backward point where Dan Lawrence takes a smart catch standing quite close in the gully off Ben Stokes.

West Indies are 5/336, trailing by 171 runs. Jason Holder walks in at number seven.

West Indies reach 5/351 at lunch on day four. Joseph was the only wicket to fall for the session as West Indies avoided the follow on, Brathwaite has progressed to 145 not out while Jason Holder is 12 not out.

The Windies are still 156 runs behind so there is work to do still for the Caribbean based side. Not too much movement at the moment for the seamers but Leach is extracting quite a bit of turn as is Lawrence with his part-time spin while he was at the bowling crease. Leach has also bowled 60 overs thus far with the new ball 10 overs away.

West Indies were bowled out for 411 in the final session on day four. Kraigg Brathwaite was dismissed for 160, his innings lasting 489 balls and 710 minutes (almost 12 hours). Josh Da Silva made 32 as England gained a 96 run lead on first innings while Jack Leach claimed 3/118 from 69.5 overs, including 27 maidens.

In reply, England are 0/40 at stumps, leading by 136 runs. The question remains will England try to force a result and if so, how long do they bat for? I'd expect they'll try and bat for most of the first session if they do, perhaps a fraction longer and offer the West Indies a target of around 220-240 from 55-60 overs or so should they decide to try and make a game of it.

England declared at 6/185 on the final day, setting West Indies a target of 282 for victory from 65 overs. England lost several wickets chasing quick runs, Dan Lawrence top scored with 41 off 39 balls while Zak Crawley made 40 opening the innings. Veerasammy Permaul and Jayden Seales led the Windies' attack with two wickets each.

In reply, West Indies reached 5/135 at stumps thanks to another reargaurd innings from captain Kraigg Brathwaite whose innings of 56 not out from 184 balls ensured the Windies achieved a draw with good support from Josh Da Silva who was also not out on 30. West Indies slipped to 3/39 early in their innings and then 5/94 once Jason Holder was dismissed but Brathwaite and Da Silva batted their side to safety with Brathwaite was named Player of the Match for his contribution in the game. Jack Leach led England's attack again with 3/36 to give his side a chance on the final day.

The third and final test starts on Thursday at the National Cricket Stadium in St George's, Grenada.

Evidently Brathwaite batted across both innings for 955 minutes, faced 673 deliveries, scoring 216 runs to deny England victory. That is some herculean effort. With the series locked up Grenada will be the venue for the series decider.. unless it is another draw.
