GCA assessment system flawed, says Manifold Heights - The Geelong Advertiser

what are everyone's thoughts on it?
seems a bit unfair that only 60% of your division 2 points would count.

is it true what zim said that if even they had of won all there div 1 games they stil would've been relegated?

Mr IPL you know the set-up could you help us out here, you don't have to tell us your opinions on it but just as to how the GCA has come about this points system of the league :D

I'll certainly be keeping a close eye on your performance this year Sean. And I can't wait to see Grantley swinging in from the members end either.

I think, on basis that they were only in Div 1 for a season, that they would have been.

No reason really, just sick of seeing peanuts posting every five minutes. Probably a bad idea anyway

If Manifolds figures are correct (which I believe they are) then the system is definately flawed. What hope do Div 2 clubs have of staying up more than 1 year. No incentive for Div 2 clubs to strive to play at the highest level when they are coming straight back down.
This assesment system must go, with the GCA to go back to Club Championship points whilst keeping an eye on clubs administrative capabilities, juniors etc.....

Re: Geelong Cricket '08/'09(gca/bpca)

Manifold need to be carefull and not bag the GCA too much or they'll never get back in. It's good to see someone finally stand up to them though!!

If the report is true, then it would be a disgrace on the GCA's part. Why would it carry over four years as quoted in the addy? Too many 'hidden' agenda's on the GCA committee.

I think it will clean up hopefully when the season starts and we have actual cricket to speak about!

Would there be any interest in setting up an external messageboard for GCA talk? It would by ready in a day or two and would allow threaded discussions, rather than the one giant thread we have here, and banning/probating of people acting like tools.

If enough people would like to see this, I'll set one up.

Also, if I'm breaking bigcricket rules by posting this, please delete my post or whatever@|

Re: Geelong Cricket '08/'09(gca/bpca)

it seems that not many people agree with the leagues criteria, is there anyway we can go about it to get it amended?

i know agg has nothing to do with it, there are 12 or so people who make decisions but it doesn't seem right.

so because HIghton declined to go up (which isn't the worst decision because they would have to win the majority of games in div1 just to stay there), Manifold should've stayed.. is that not an open and closed case and the GCA have just made it difficult?

i'm sure all the committee's across the leagues must be pulling their collective hair out trying to understand whats gonna happen for next season.

I believe what Manifold has stated is true, that because they had previous points counting against them then they would have still gone down had they had a season like East Belmont. When they say that they get 60% of their points in division 2 when they go to division 1 then this is not 100% correct. What happens is that they get 40% of their playing points from division 2 when they go up to division 1. The playing points make up approx 30 points out of roughly 90 points. so if for instance when Manifold was down in division 2 for the season and assuming we had a 13 round season, they won 10 in 1st XI, 12 in 2nd XI and 9 in 3rd XI that would equate to 23.5 out of a possible 29.25. This would mean going into Div 1, they would only take 9.4 points when compared to a division 1 side. So if we compare them to one of the lower sides in division 1 for a season which may have had 2 wins in 1st XI, 2 in 2nd XI, 0 in 3rd XI and 3 in 4th XI, this would be 4.25 points for the season. So you see that when comparing these two teams between a good division 2 season and a bad division 1 season then the 40% does make sense because traditionally when a team comes up from division 2 they would be ranked amongst the bottom few clubs. The GCA then use a rolling average over 5 years (I think) so it just means that over those 5 years Manifold were ranked the 13th club and even though they had an average year last season (much better than some clubs) there 5 year average hurt them because they had some previous bad years in division 1. Not sure what the best option is going forward with promotion/relegation but I suppose if we stick to keeping the teams in a division constant and not change each year then one up and one down will probably work !!

Agg does have a lot to do with it because he approves the criteria and sends he's monkey's out to judge each club on the set criteria. If he was at all a strong leader he would have seen this assesment criteria was flawed when he first took over the reigns from that knucklehead FISHER

Re: Geelong Cricket '08/'09(gca/bpca)

I just think you should only be judged soley on what you did last season.
Who cares what happened 5 years ago? How many teams would have the same players they did 5 years ago, i know Newtown definitely wouldn't. Andeton was at Thomson 5 years ago, Babb at Newcomb, Moore at Joeys (i'm just using South as an example :D) so therefore after next season those 3 are contributing to their old teams totals. 5 years is a long time to be judged on, what happens if a team like East Belmont has a really bad season this year and then a few of them leave, season after they finish bottom 3 and more players leave, will that then mean they will be in Division 1 the season after because they won the club championships in the 1st 2 years of the 5 year cycle?

Surely you should be judged on the current season and clubs know that going into the final round where they are on the club championship, (eg:they know that they might need an outright to try and get into the next division, and play accordingly) but at the moment we have to wait a few months after the season until we find out where the teams are for next season, which in turn can be hard for teams to attract sponsors, players and coaches.

Eg: Player X wants to play for Team Y as long as Team Y is in Division Z... and believe me it does happen!

yeah he looked alright for his first night, the fitness training at the start was a bit different to what he is used to. He is a good kid and will be a good pick up should he choose to stay on for the season. Not that it is an indication but he actually hit one of the hard wicket players in the chin and drew a bit of blood, pretty lucky no other damage was done. He was a good boy and did not bowl to the president also !! He is low 20's in age.

Be carefull Sth Barwon. His back and ankles are gone. May bowl a fraction short on turf, much to the liking of some decent Div 1 batsmen. I'm also led to believe he has a very high opinion of himself, which I'm sure the big fella will knock that out of him quick smart

Yeah fair point. I think the whole idea of the assessment was to stop the clubs from only caring about the onfield performance of their seniors, and to think about the other areas around the club. Definetly club champoinship up and down is a black and white way to go about it but over the last how many years the number of teams in Div 1 and 2 has been up and down like a yo-yo. If everyone agrees to "lock it in Eddie" with 12-12-12 then we can maybe have the one up and one down based on club championship as it is clear cut and visible to everyone. We just do not want that to start a bidding war.

Unfortunately when Barry McMahon (god bless his soul) passed away FISHER was the one who introduced this assesment criteria, and AGG hasn't got the balls or leadership skills to change it

Re: Geelong Cricket '08/'09(gca/bpca)

earlier in the forum there was a question about who had the toughest and easiest draw in div. 1. What are peoples thoughts about the draw in div.2?? easiest and toughest???

his back and ankles might recover bowling on turf rather than hard wicket as he has currently done for his life. however he turns out he has plenty of promise to be a back-up to either Brad, Ando, Wonka, etc. he is young enough to learn a fair bit from those guys and is a genuniely quiet bloke from my dealings with him. hehe, you are right about Ando :)
