Re: Geelong Cricket '08/'09(gca/bpca)

I think in terms of best player in GCA, you have to think about guys like Brad, Loftus, Talarico, and to think out of them all, who would go best at a higher level. In my opinion, the best technically is Loftus, though Talarico runs him close. At a GCA level, it is difficult to argue with Brad H's numbers, but would his technique stand up to 1st grade bowling/batting at VCA level? For me the best player is Loftus.

Not sure if I agree with that. Didn't South bat in the evening of the first day with only about an hour of play on an overcast day. I reckon most teams would not want their best bat to go out in the middle while only chasing a smallish total. Not sure if the great Glen Talarico has actually played in a GCA grand final, and as for Lofty if his side was in that situation it would not be einstein to stop him from going in. If the other South bats that went in on the first night had of done their job then this discussion would have been over. :)

Yes, Loftus and Talarico do look good, but does that really matter??? By memory a bloke called Steve Waugh made over 10,000 of the ugliest runs you will ever see and he made them at the highest level. I am not saying Brad would make runs at that level or at the VCA level, but it proves being ugly and making runs or being pretty making runs doesn't mean jack shit!!!!

I wasn't talking about looking good, i was talking about having the tools/technique to be able to do it at a higher level.

Time will tell. I am sticking by my comments. Brendan Hall will not be at Newcomb.

Re: Geelong Cricket '08/'09(gca/bpca)

As with bowling. Harps was never the cleanest or best looking bowler going around, but he has been the best strike bowler in the last 10 years of GCA divi 1 cricket.

So being not technically correct just does not matter.

Re: Geelong Cricket '08/'09(gca/bpca)

Div 1 (ie best in Geelong)

Most Underated: Gareth Yelland: His day in the sun is approaching
Most Overated: Damian Koliba: Not sure why he still bothers
Best: Brad Hauenstein: Can't go past him for consistency and achievement

Div 2

Most Underated: Steve Illingworth: Makes runs, takes wickets consistently
Most Overated: Matt Barkley/ Lucas Cameron
Best: Lucas Benci. At present. Has had a good coule of seasons. Would be good to see him back up in Div 1 at some stage.

Fair point! But I think Brads record counts for itself. I think he would have no problems stepping up to that level. I also think that it is shown by Geelong year in year out trying to chase him proves what talent they think he is and could be at Geelong. Lets hope for both the GCA and Sth Barwons sake he never heads down to the Cattery.

I think the fact that he has green and gold of sth barwon running through his veins has something to do with it.

Fair call.... except that he did not come in at 5 after about 5 or 6 overs on the second day.
I do believe that Grovedale however sent their best bat in to open the batting, after losing the toss. I think he had a good game?

haha it is quite funny :D
i do agree with south barwon followers that brad would stand up to VCA level, but i'm very interested why he never has tried his luck in the VCA wether it be Geelong or elsewhere.

Why did Brad bat at 6 in the biggest game of his career after batting 4 all year? Would never have seen Loftus or Talarico hide.

I am not sure how often any team on the 1st day would actually move their opener (who pretty much opens all his life) down the order in a grand final. It may be feasible to do this on the evening of the 1st day, but it would not even be dreamt of in the 1st innings of a match. In saying that Kelson was the major difference between the two sides and scoring 80 odd out of 120 had to be one of the highest percentage of a team total that has ever won a grand final. Maybe need to get Mr Stat's man of the GCA Kevin O'Dowd onto that one!!

bit of a City flavour here ! :)
not sure if you would class the guy that lead the GCA country week sides bowling honours last season as over-rated. Sure he could possibly be better than what he was if he was fully fit but over-rated, no.
Lindsay is interesting as he has not played much GCA cricket. Will be interesting to see how he goes after a full year back in the comp. At the end of the year might need to see how this post stacks up.
