From our glory days in div 1 ,remember North Geelong had a few lovely old ladies that put on the best spread going round, great sangas and homebaked sausage rolls and cakes galore with real cream, which was some relief whist Ross Almer made 199.
The worst smoko,i wont mention the club but involved a bucket of kfc and 2 warm bottles of pepsi, not great on a 30 plus degree day

Especially if you play with gaylard. he would have demolished it within seconds.

Would it always be a bye when you play against a team Ben Smiljanic's in Mr Nichols?

Rumour has it that you always seem to have something on matchday when you're scheduled to play him. I quote the great man

IE: this season, moving house I do believe.
Which 1st XI cricketers move house on a Saturday?

I'm pretty sure the last time (before Thomson v Murghe in the pre-Xmas round) that Ben Smiljanic played against Murghe was for the St.Peter's U/12's in the early '90's.

Trust me, he (Nichols) wasn't moving house. Nothing more sinister than work I'm afraid.

Re: Geelong Cricket Chat

I see the GCA have released the finals venues with Div 1 & 2 grand finals to be played alongside each other at GCC. Well done. Should be a great crowd. However, Div 3 Grand Final to be played at Modewarre. Good luck getting a crowd down there from clubs other than the two combatants. Surely, despite the quality of the ground and deck, a suitable hard wicket ground could have been found in Geelong. King Lloyd Reserve for instance, I believe is hosting Div 2 4ths. Can't work it out.

Yeah should be good, hopefully I'm not their to see it because we're playing but if not will be a great weekend down at KP. Agree with div3 GF though, why isn't it on turf anyway???

i realise that div 3 is prodominently a hard wicket comp, but wouldn't you choose the best ground in the comp to host the grand final?
and we have the bset ground in the comp. and so what if it's turf? more than likely it'll be us and modda, and modda are better on turf than we are!

I think King Lloyd may be available only Saturday of the grand final weekend. Ongoing saga for a few years now with Geelong Touch Football Association grand finals generally on the same weekend (they play their regular season matches there on Monday evenings, hence the ground markings all over the oval in the cricket season). One would think the regular tenant would have priority, but COGG don't alwys see it that way.

Like most others I assumed Div 3 GF would be at Guild, but on reflection a turf GF probably wouldn't happen until there is a second turf ground in the comp (so both semis are on turf and no-one has a perceived advantage). Still, there was a GDCA grand final in the early '90's at Bell Park when it was the only turf ground left in that comp, until NDSC put theirs in.

Both hard wicket clubs at the time.

And I thik you would be right and i think St Albans won and then fled to the BPCA the following season. Unsure why? The hard wicket? Also from memory I think the GCA went to two divsions the next season.

Wasn't that the last year of GDCA? and the GCA was only turf then wasn't it? I'd asume thats why they chose the BPCA.

I know the year after they won the flag they lost 19 out of the best 22 players or something like that, Cammorotto took the majority to Marshall apparently.

The last GDCA year was 1994-95; I think NDSC were in all 4 sections' grand finals but only won the 1sts. That game was also at Bell Park; they won by only a couple of runs due to a yes-no-yes-no run out which claimed the final Bell Park wicket. 6 clubs including SABCC became GCA 3rd Division next season, which only lasted 3 years. That's when SABCC returned to BPCA and Guild & St.Mary's merged, and GCA went back to 2 Divisions.

SABCC came to GDCA in early '90's. At the time Bill Althorpe and Daryl Burns had the hope/expectation a turf wicket was about to go in in a few years. Good that the club is now there; just took a bit longer than what Bill envisaged!

You are 100% correct, because that is why the Frogs were able to relocate to King Lloyd Reserve in 1998.

Sorry Badger, my reference to Guild & St.Mary's merging was after the 3 years of GCA 3rd Division, which went from 1995-96 to 1997-98 inclusive.

Ok, you would think having the grand final at Geelong is a great idea but you need to remember that with Geelong CC likely to be in Melbourne supporting their sides in finals that there might not be representation from the cricket club there to have the bar open, etc. I am not sure if they will have their curator down at the ground on the day to clean up the wicket during the break etc, because when you are playing at a local club they have their club curator where as Geelong have their COGG curator during the week and their club volunteers on the weekend. I hope it works out with a belter of a wicket produced but although Geelong might have the best outfield in the region their wicket is not any better then the best local squares in Geelong. Our past two VB T20 experiences at the Geelong CC have not been great either, so let's hope their curators can get it right for this game.

What do the division 2 clubs think of the 2nd XI grand final being played at South Barwon, is that an issue ? I am not sure what South Barwon's ground is doing second week of the finals either, so not sure on why it then gets a grand final and not a semi final ??

IPL, I would assume that if Div 2 2nd XI is played at Sth Barwon, then that would be a good get and they all would be happy with that.

Yes, well done and well-recollected. Please correct me if i'm wrong here also but i reckon that these were some halcyon days for Bell Park and with Tim Bailey at the helm, i seem to recall them going from Div 3 to Div 1 under their own steam through promotion over about a three year period. Fantastic effort but alas it seems lilke to long ago for the current Dragons. Divvy 3 was a good comp with Bell Park, University, Guild, AT, etc. Not long after it did become compulsory to have turf to continue in the GCA. I was with University and they installed turf straight away.

The second ground is supposed to be in heaps better nick then the main ground so i don't think it was a misprint.
