Thinking further re materials in its construction, some may have been of wood, like its base. In earlier years of course. This item has been around for at least a century in one development or another. To use it requires skills I've never been able to master. I get by using ancient techniques which I'm not bad at after a lifetime of clumsiness.

This item was invented first in France in 1830. I suspect the early models had no plastic but had metal and wood. It was also human powered before the miracle of electrickery. Pedals I think.I'll take a wild guess....heated rollers?
