Hang Time

Hi,

I was just wondering whether this length, height of jump is correct, or whether it is still a 'hop', as in my previous videos. Please ignore other factors of my action in the video as I am just concerned about hang time regarding this particular video.

Deliveries are at 17s, 45s and 1min 13s (though that one isn't so good)

While I'm on the topic, is it legal to ask the umpire to stand in a certain position (about four steps from the stumps) to 'mark out' where to jump from?

Re: Hang Time

It's not a hop, but then again it's probably not the 'hang time' you were looking for.

As for the umpire, as far as I'm aware you can ask him to stand closer or further away from the stumps as you wish.

Why is that? It does not look right, but I cannot put my finger on why.

Re: Hang Time

I imagine that you were looking for something a little bit higher and something a little bit longer.

I agree that something looks a little odd with it, I think it may be due to the face that you look a little lethargic in the jump? There isn't that 'blast' of energy that you might expect to see.

Edit:

Watching it again, I'd say that hesitant might be a better word, rather than lethargic. Were you feeling stiff or carrying an injury of any kind?

Perhaps, but I think it is adequate, compared to before. You are right though, I have my heart set on something a tad higher. I thought the length was okay though, but I guess it would be naturally longer with height.

No injury at the time, however, it was an attempt to simply jump as far as possible and so there was no definate place of take off or jump to. I haven't used this jump with a ball, but will try it in the nets on Friday before my U16 game.

'Were you feeling stiff' - I'm always stiff! That was a few months ago, but playing the percentages, I probably was a bit stiff.

Re: Hang Time

Hang time is a tough one to judge as it really depends on the bowler. Some will go high, others long and some will barely get off the ground (as you know!).

What you have at the moment is fine and will serve you well but if you could get the same angle with a ball in your hand and a crease to aim for it it would be a truer representation of where you are with things.

Re: Hang Time

Yeah, I'll take my camera to the game on Friday - hopefully I can get an in match bowling shot but will definately try to get one in the nets beforehand.

Re: Hang Time

I agree, you are making good improvements.

Trying to analyse these videos really hurt my eyes so I have to keep coming back to them. The problem is, you cannot move frame by frame so you miss quite a lot the first 100 times of viewing. The low definition does not help either.

I know you only want to know about hang time but it is impossible to separate this one component; it is what it is because of the rest of the movement. In this case, manee, it is your knee lifts. Back foot impact knee lift is OK but the others are hardly there. As mas c has highlighted, this may be because of stiffness. If this is the case, you must work on your mobility, especially your left hip, knee and ankle everyday; you have to have more flexibility and mobility here. This will engage your hips better, driving the action towards the target, it will also help with forward momentum. Getting both legs working will produce a more natural action and will eliminate the hesitation.

Re: Hang Time

Yeh I'm pretty sure, well at least in test and ODI cricket you can ask the umpire either to stand close to the stumps or as far away as he can.

Thanks for the advice. I am currently working on the run up. I did not realise that the quality of youtube videos was so bad, in future I will post stills as an attachment. As for only wanting to know about hangtime, this is quite an old video of my simply trying to jump as far as possible and so I was wondering if the result of such an attempt was okay.

The lack of freeze frame and slow motion is a pain in the behind - agree with you 100% there, Liz.

My videos play in VLC player, but are too big to post on sC, so you merely need to ask and I can get stills made with the video at 0.13x speed.

Re: Hang Time

Sorry, manee, wasn't having a go at you, it was more a general moan at the lack of freeze frame from youtube.

I'm looking into ways of making it easier to look and analyse videos and will post up some ideas when I've looked at all the options.

Got a 'Crictube' in mind? ;)

Re: Hang Time

This is better manee, though misses quite a lot of info. It does not look too bad. Any chance of a more recent set of photos? I really would like to see you front on too.
