hitting up!!!!!:(

hey guys i have a problem with my drives when i go to play a drive it usually gets hit into the air. i know i lean back but even when i try to get my head over the ball i still dont have my bat pointing down, what could help me?

Re: hitting up!!!!!:(

chances are you are hitting the ball to far out infront of your pad, when you do this you have less control of the shot and the ball tends to go in the air.

try getting your head over the ball and then your foot should follow, then you need to make sure you time the drive. play to early and the bat will once again be out in front of the pad. the ideal time to hit the ball is when you bat is in line with your pad.

Re: hitting up!!!!!:(

You've identified the problem yourself - you're not getting over the ball. As ever the key is practice and a lot of it. Go back to hitting a stationary ball (off a tee or upturned paper cup etc), work on the foot movement, getting your foot beside the ball and then the head over the knee.

From here progress to a drop ball (someone standing to your off side, drops the ball, let it bounce once or twice then play the shot) and then finally to a dribble feed (let the ball come to you slowly, almost a grubber but with a but more bounce).

Finally build it up to throw downs (from not less than 15/18 yards away) and then on to normal bowling - a bowling maching is very helpful here.

All the time you need to working on the technique, foot movement, balance etc.

Check your grip as well, how much bottom hand are you using? You'll need a little bit but don't let it dominate the shot.

Re: hitting up!!!!!:(

As mentioned above you've identified your problem. Perhaps your head comes up and you lean back because your back leg collapses. Its worth checking your final balanced base position after you've played the shot. Your Back foot should still be parallel to the crease (not turned thru 90 degree’s and facing the bowler) although its normal to raise your heal. Your back leg should be braced not bent. If your back legs collapsed it maybe the reason you lean back - Just a thought.

I disagree with that slightly. The best time to hit it is just in front of your pad, this gives you more control. However, this requires a solid technique as you have to get your head right out in front - almost enough to topple over (almost).

Lead with your head into the shot and really over-exaggerate hitting in front of your pad with the drills already mentioned so when you go into the net you can go back a bit and it feels easy.

The top hand also needs to be in control of the shot, so keep a light grip with your bottom hand and only play checked drives until you get the feel for top hand control.

Question from somebody whose main claim to batting fame was running my partner out (and I usually only had one, coming in at #11) - would it be worth (if the bottom hand is chronically in control) facing a few throw-downs using the top hand only? The idea being that this would help the top become the dominant hand when both grip the bat again. Or the Gilchrist squash ball?
