If you were an Australian Selector, what would you do if...

Re: If you were an Australian Selector, what would you do if...

Considering Hussey did 'ok' in the champions trophy, would this convince selectors to give him another chance in the test arena after a number of poor performances? (barring his hundred in the last ashes test which was a pretty ordinary hundred anyway)

Re: If you were an Australian Selector, what would you do if...

Id say Hussey is safe until the end of our home summer, especially after his performance in the CT and the last test in England, still with Phil Jacques on the way back from injury it's not hard to imagine Jacques and Katich opening in the first test against New Zealand come early 2010 with Watson at 5.

What about a team like this.

Jacques
Katich
Ponting
Clarke
Watson
North
Haddin
Johnson
Hauritz
Siddle
Bollinger

I think a lot depends on the upcoming domestic season, depending on how jaques and hughes compare in the runs department. I'm looking forward to big things from Shane Watson this summer, hopefully in the middle order.
As much as i highly rate Doug Bollinger, i'd say Brett Lee would be in front of him, but they won't drop Hilfenhaus after the ashes anyway.

I would love to see them use the 4 quicks rather than the spinner though!!

Re: If you were an Australian Selector, what would you do if...

Hussey's performances at ODI level have nothing to do with his Test selection.

Hussey is the third best ODI batsman in the world currently. He has been outstanding the last couple of years. At number 6 he has carried the side home or boosted the score with a quick fire 30-50. Essential for the team.

That has kept him in the Test side IMO. He is just like Bevan. Bevan was kept in the Test side because of his ODI performances. But was eventually dropped after not performing for a long time.

The same appears to be happening for Hussey. He finally gets in form and the series is over and he loses it again. Having the next two Test series will be good for him. He is looking good IMO. Keep him for a while yet, sort out the problems with the bowling attack first.

I don't like 4 frontline quicks, I think Hauritz has performed admirably when his been in the test team or the ODI team. He now is our frontline spinner and I can easily see him performing a Tim May type role for us.

Tim May averaged mid 30's with the ball and he was a handy lower order batsmen, Hauritz is good enough to be that type of bowler.

Especially after what happened at the Oval I would expect us to pick a spinner for the next 50 years.

I like that team, but lets remember back to 2005 when many said Hayden had run his race and then after he scored that ton in the last ashes test he was near unstoppable for the next few seasons.

Im not convinced Hussey is done with yet.

I mirror those two thoughts exactly and have said that for a while.

Love or hate Hauritz he is here for a while now. Just like what I have to do with Siddle, get used to him.

Re: If you were an Australian Selector, what would you do if...

Hauritz is now a very capable ODI bowler, it will be interesting to see how he goes in India against some quality players.

Re: If you were an Australian Selector, what would you do if...

Hauritz is the best spinner by a mile. Don't know why they chose Holland who has shown very little.

Re: If you were an Australian Selector, what would you do if...

Okay for a new one...

If you were an Australian Selector what would you do if Phil Jaques scored very highly in the next season, easily topping the list as best batsman and/or opener?

Re: If you were an Australian Selector, what would you do if...

Nothing, Chris Rogers did it last year and they picked Shane Watson as an opener

Re: If you were an Australian Selector, what would you do if...

Jaques has proven himself at the top level, so if he were to start making runs at first class level, it would prove that he would be on his way back to his best. He would definitely be a candidate.

:D I laughed.

He'd certainly be looked at. Phil is 30 now so he isn't getting any younger plus he has a dodgy back. Jaques is a very good player though and I'm certain he would get another chance or at least come into calculations if he put the runs on the board. Watson and Katich will be under pressure to make runs and those two along with Jaques will also have to compete with Phil Hughes if he starts making runs.

Let's just assume that Watson is a short term fix. He may not be but I have the feeling he is only there until Hughes gets it together. So instead I will look at the Hughes vs Jaques situation.

Hughes is ten years younger then Jaques. Jaques has a more classical technique, and although Hughes' unorthodox technique is not necessarily bad (and I like the different style techniques) but has been shown that plans can be built up to control him and I don't think the short ball problem is his only problem. Jaques is a solid performer who performs year in, year out and has been around the Australian position for a long time. He has been in the side and has made big runs. I like him as a player, it's just whether or not he is a better choice than Hughes. I think I would play him first, let Hughes show his consistency at domestic level first. Who knows if he can play season after season like that? Jaques would be an assured performer, it's only whether or not there are better performers. Plus he is very used to batting with Katich and they make a good opening pair.

Re: If you were an Australian Selector, what would you do if...

Rogers should be ahead of all 3 of them, whilst Hilditch has come out and said Watson is not a long term option

Re: If you were an Australian Selector, what would you do if...

I haven't seen much of Rogers so I'm not sure on thigns regarding him.

What do you think Hughes vs Jaques though?

Dud with crap technique v dud with bad back? They will move Watson to 6, Katich to 4 and play an almost entire NSW top 7 (Although Ricky does live there and has for years)

eddie pumping up a player that's pulled on a Bushranger uniform, what a surprise :)

:D

Although we know not to trust anyone from WA on team selection, after all they thought a player was no good at One day cricket yet in his 1st season away he wins the One Day Player of the Year Award :)
