Improving grip

Re: Improving grip

Let us know how you get on. A word of warning though, find your own technique and do not let the coaches [who think they know better ;)] change it. You will have your own, unconventional style; however, this will make it hard for you to coach others.

Re: Improving grip

I got my powerball today and ahve to say it is a bit strange. Had a go on it and found it to be really working my arm and wrist, don't think I'm very good at it at the moment though.

Re: Improving grip

Just for those who don't know exactly what a Powerball is, what is it? This is aimed at anyone who knows, as i'm not exactly 100% sure!

Re: Improving grip

Which model did you get?

Do remember to use it in both hands [not at the same time :)] and when you get used to it, raise your arms; trying it in different positions.

The Powerball is about the size of a cricket ball containing a gyroscope which spins up to 15,000 RPM, generating an incredible 40lbs of torque.

A powerball would be good for you; allowing improvements in muscle activity around the fingers, hand, wrist and elbow. At the same time the upper arm and shoulder girdle muscles support the elbow in one position. By changing the position and angle of your elbow, you activate the shoulder girdle and rotator cuff muscles. Different muscle groups can be exercised depending on the position of the arm in relation to the rest of the body.

Re: Improving grip

Eventually you could do, but you would need to master its force first. Just holding it would strengthen the muscles.

Actually, you would like this; it starts spinning at about 2,500 RPM. When you feel the force kick in you have to increase its speed by rotating your wrist whilst keeping in synch with the spinning of the ball. The idea is to improve your score each time you use it. The World Record used to be 16,317 RPM. Fancy the challenge? ;)

Re: Improving grip

I got mine from amazon a while back, need to get another one though as I've lost the starter cord. Somehow, my brother can get it working without but no-one else has managed it yet.

Re: Improving grip

I'll have a search around, i'd be interested to get hold of one as i've never even seen one, never mind used one.

Re: Improving grip

They're pretty strange at first and take a little time to get used to but you do feel them working fairly quickly.

Should cost around the £20 mark, depending on model and where you buy.

Rob, if you like your bat, weight it for practice. Put a couple of wrist or ankle weights around the blade; one in the centre and one at the bottom.

How do you get the weights to stay on Liz? I find them slipping off.

It depends on the weight. I have some that slide off as soon as the bat becomes vertical. Look for ones that have a webbed strap all the way round; these can be tightened more effectively and the webbing causes enough friction to hold on. The higher you attach them the more secure they are but they are more functional at the bottom of the 'blade'.

You could try attaching a bandage around the bat first [one that adheres to itself] and strapping the weight over it.

Re: Improving grip

Been keeping on with the powerball, can get to about 7500 revs now. Good fun but have had to watch it as it hurts my wrist if I use it for too long.

Re: Improving grip

That's great but, yes, do build up slowly and make sure you use the powerball with both hands [not at the same time ]

Re: Improving grip

Talking about grip, its now about the time where i pick up a ball again and start to play with it.....Liz, dont get too excited, im talking about a cricket ball.

I've not picked one up for about 2 months, not even looked at one ;) Generally if i'm sitting watching the TV, having and arguement with my GF or just waiting for the post, i just spin it throught my fingers, its all good practise.
