Level of cricket is one thing but so are the grounds we play on. If the councils dont take action to invest time into the playing areas (especially the wickets) then you will see clubs also make the move based on those reasons.

I mean - look at the wickets they dished up for the GFs - absolutely brilliant.

Obviously it can be done - they just need to put a little more time into the preparation.

Sounds like you blokes need to be in a Comp that is solely dedicated to the promotion and maitainance of turf cricket, one that has the expertise and clout in dealing with a number of Councils on such matters.

Re: MMVCA General Cricket Chat

You lads are taking yoursleves way to seriously... FFS get a life, cricket has finsihed. I bet you are all slipping a bat handle length up yourselves!
Anyway each to there own;)

Fair enough and I understand they would have put maybe double the time into the wickets for the GFs but maybe spending 30 mins more on the heavy roller every week on every deck would not be unreasonable?

Well maybe it is considering we played on decks that were not even prepared this year.

i think this year in comparison to any other year the wickets were at their worst and the council did less prep this year.

I think the exec must work harder to meet with council and ensure clubs are getting value for money and decent playing surfaces. Regardless if council have "iisues" with turf at present, its up to the exec and stronger clubs to push hard at council and make sure we are no getting ripped off.

a few years back we had council eating out of our hands and were providing extra rolling, sunday preparation and a high standard of wickets. but we have let them drop off.

clubs need to stop complaining and get off their backsides and work with council and our exec need to as well!

be very happy you get any assistance from the council at all. My club (hobsons bay council) has had no help for 15 years on the wicket, apart from scarifying ,laser leveling and top dressing pre season. All match wicket preperation is done from within the club, 15 or so hrs a week (including hand watering). Only this year are we a chance for council support (or so they tell us) because we have reached a level (vtca senior div) where they offer it to other clubs in the municipality. If you want good wickets, dont rely on the council, do the extra work required yourself. Its well worth it.

I did not think we could do any work ourselves to the decks. Can anyone shed any light here?

if your club is able to provide a roller you are able to roll the wicket as much as you wanted but clubs were restricted later in the year to cut the wicket any lower than the council cut it due to the drought

do the council leave rollers, mowers etc at each ground or transport them around. If equipment is stored at grounds a meeting with the council advising that you would like to do additional work on their facilities at no cost to them, hard to see them having to many problems with that. Were you blokes on hand water or sprinklers for your wicket tables last season?. Offer to do hand watering (we had 6 hrs per week, although rarley used more than 4 hrs), saves them water (no where near as much waste) and your table will stay lush all year. We have 4 wickets on our table and played a semi on a wicket with no more than 5% clippings. BUT theres a lot of work involved, plenty of volinteers early but can be a little hard to find when its 40 degrees and someone has to stand out in the heat for 2 hours and hand water because its your alloted time. Worth the effort though, only way you will get better wickets.

If i were keen to join a club in your comp, which one would need a bowler in your top grades?

Well to be be honest I know us at Easts are looking for a quality bowler. We took very few wickets this year and whilst we had bowlers, we needed a bowler that had a true wicket ball. i.e like Newton, Appleyard, Pipe, Dyson and the rest (sorry if I missed anyone notable here - just placing a few examples.

Feel free to PM me if you are interested in having a beer and a chin wag.

Sean.

Placing the opportunity here plus on the Cricket Victoria website would be the way to go.

A local advert in the Moreland Leader etc would also be a suggestion.

Re: MMVCA General Cricket Chat

East Coburg is looking for a Coach. We will place an ad on the Cricket Victoria Website as well as ads in the local rags but anyone who is interested, please send me a PM and I will organise the relevant interviews with the committee and senior players as part of the process.

Current players looking to step up into a coaching role are encourage to get involved. We are not necessarily looking for an experienced coach - rather the right person to take this club to the next level.

:)

Re: MMVCA General Cricket Chat

hows this for an idea..during the debate bout the POSSIBLE merger the question has rised who has the better A grade league..i reckon every third, fourth or fifth year or something there could be a super series between the two most powerful or consistant sides in both forms..this can be measured by not how many flags you have won in the time frame but how many games the teams have won..gives sides who may choke or not able to do the business at the crunch time of the year to play..format, 2 satday sunday games and whoever has the better percentage wins..the regular season can be reduced by making 2 two dayers of the season into 2 one dayers to free up two weekends during the season..make the first game before the season on the hard wicket and the second game of the series on turf the week before christmas..gives the side who wins something to celebrate during christmas..but more than anything make the prize money worth wild and promote it through out the area to get good good good crowds to the games!!

Well if you are keen and rate yourself come down to Pascoe Vale. If you are a top grade bowler the club will look after you $$ Just missed the finals this season so you would be a bonus.
