No, it's Mephisto directed by István Szabó and based on the same-titled novel by Klaus Mann and starring Klaus Maria Brandauer who also played a villain in a James Bond movie. I read the book not long ago. The cover shows Brandauer with his movie makeup again.

Much earlier than that. Back in the days of of the cheesy American sci fi. Tho this one could well be considered a classic of the genre. Lead actor is Michael Rennie. There has been a recent remake too.

what sticks out for me is Demetrious and the gladiators.

You mean you like this movie? Cant say I've seen it. This genre is called Peplum.. usually Italian made with an American actor as the hero.
