Re: New Zealand in Australia

New Zealand struggled today against New South Wales on the first of their tour match at the SCG. The Kiwis were bowled out for 266 by a no-name New South Wales line-up which included first-class debutant Josh Hazlewood and young all-rounder Moises Henriques. Hazelwood went on to take two wickets on debut whilst Grant Lambert did most of the damage with a five wicket haul.

Jamie How was the standout for NZ, scoring 170 out of his team's 266. The next best scorer was Ross Taylor with 31. How was also the last man dismissed in the New Zealand innings.

In reply, New South Wales faced five overs before stumps and negotiated them well enough to be 0/15 at the close. Phil Hughes has top score with 10.

Re: New Zealand in Australia

Have always been impressed by How's batting ever since he came into the international fold. Has a real nice controled and temperment about how he goes about it.

He is the only batsman that I feel has the shots the do damage against the Aussies this summer.

Re: New Zealand in Australia

anyone go down and watch, how did hazlewood go?? huge wraps on this tall fast bowler. good figures on debut.

can't see new zealand scoring enough to make a contest IMO

Re: New Zealand in Australia

Khawaja was out in the first over of the day without adding to his score. Hughes made 62 before becoming Iain O'Brien's first wicket of the match and then had a second after Forrest gave Ross Taylor a catch.

Daniel Vettori picked up his first wickets a short time ago, getting Moises Henriques for 55 after edging to slip.

New South Wales are 4/178, trailing by 88 runs. They've scored 163 runs from 55 overs today.

Re: New Zealand in Australia

MICHAEL CLARKE'S battle with a debilitating virus could prompt Australia to play both Andrew Symonds and Shane Watson in the first Test against New Zealand.

Clarke was yesterday named in a 13-man squad for the Gabba Test, beginning next Thursday, but was withdrawn from tonight's All-Stars Twenty20 match due to the illness, contracted in Nagpur last week. The Australian vice-captain has lost six kilograms in a week and has constricted breathing. He has undergone blood tests to identify the illness, and is hopeful he will recover for the Test.

If Clarke fails to recover in time, it could save the selectors choosing between Symonds and Watson for the all-rounder's spot.

With Hilditch all but admitting off spinner Jason Krejza would play in Brisbane, selectors faced a vexing decision choosing between Symonds, considered among the game's finest all-rounders, and Watson, one of Australia's best pace bowlers in India. Clarke's battle with illness may delay the call, but a duel between the two Queensland all-rounders this summer is inevitable.

Re: New Zealand in Australia

Symonds (okay it was a 20-20 game) but did seem to be striking the ball really well. Bringing him back into the test squad of 13 isn't for kicks and he will play!

The selectors wouldn't do this unless they thought he was capable again.

Re: New Zealand in Australia

The kiwis really struggled yesterday as we overtook there score easily. To think they couldn't get out Henriques or Smith means realy problems. NSW all out for 361 in reply to the kiwis 266. Now we have NZ 4/60.

I cant see how the Kiwis expect to beat an out of form Australian side if they cant even put up a fight against the second youngest blues side ever.

Re: New Zealand in Australia

5/152 at drinks in the last session. Flynn and Vettori batted well but Flynn was just out for 55 to Henriques who has all five wickets. Lead is only 57 at the moment so the Kiwis are in a bit of strife.

Blues are doing very well.

New Zealand lead by 62 runs with five wickets in hand and a minimum of 96 overs remaining.

Re: New Zealand in Australia

New Zealand were bowled out for 256, Vettori got 73, McCullum 54. Henriques finished with figures of 5/51 and Josh Hazlewood picked up two wickets for 23.

That set NSW a target of 162 with lunch taken as soon as Iain O'Brien fell (O'Brien was the 10th wickets).

The Kiwis struck early, with Phil Hughes out cheaply for eight and since then it's been slow going for the young Blues side but they've hung in there. They're 1/43, Forrest in on 28 not out and Khwaja has faced 67 balls for his 7.

Re: New Zealand in Australia

NSW passed the target score four wickets down. The two Smith's got the Blues home in the end, Daniel making 42 not out and Steven hit an undefeated 37. Peter Forrest also hit 26.

Chris Martin showed some good form in the second innings with the ball, taking 3/16 from 11 overs.

Good win by NSW but the game didn't bode well for the Kiwis and they'll need to regroup quickly for the first test against Australia.

Re: New Zealand in Australia

A BLEAK Brisbane weather forecast could tip the selection scales in favour of Shane Watson for the first Test against New Zealand.

Watson and Andrew Symonds are likely to duel for a sole all-rounder's berth in the Australian XI, and the prospect of rain and humidity in Brisbane may well play to Watson's bowling strengths.

The 27-year-old's pace and swing in India impressed many astute judges and a juicy Gabba wicket, coupled with heavy overhead conditions, could prove irresistible to a selection panel desperate to shore up Australia's bowling stocks.

Australian coach Tim Nielsen confirmed conditions would play a major role in determining the final make-up of the Australian side for the Test, beginning on Thursday.

"It looks like there'll be rain around all week, so that will be a big factor," Nielsen said. "Roy [Symonds] has always been picked as a batting all-rounder, and he also brings to the table some handy medium pace and spin. Watto just had a good series in India with the ball, and he can also bat up the order. Both of them bring a great balance to our squad. I'm not sure which way we'll go, but conditions will play a big part in our final decision."

Symonds's game-breaking ability in the middle-order has been vital to the Australian Test team since the retirement of Adam Gilchrist, however his recent first-class form trough has been troubling. Watson, too, was short of his optimum batting form in India, but his fast-medium bowling greatly assisted a bowling corps hampered by the underwhelming performances of Brett Lee and Stuart Clark.

Both Lee and Clark are expected to be passed fit to play the first Test, and Nielsen is counting on both to benefit from the hard, bouncy conditions at the Gabba.

Michael Clarke has recovered from a virus contracted in India, and is expected to train with the Australians today.

"He's about 90 per cent of the way there, and we're pretty confident he can rebound in time for the Test," said Australian team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris.
