ODI XI Selection Thread

1. Watson
2. Marsh
3. Ponting
4. Clarke
5. Hussey
6. Haddin
7. White
8. Hopes
9. Hauritz
10. Siddle
11. Bollinger

It looks like this will be the line up for the 1st ODI, with exception to maybe the batting order they are in there. Johnson is having three games off so expect the least performing bowler to step aside for the 4th ODI. This is the squad named, with McKay as 12th man.

Weak bowling side, IMO the all two all rounders are better than the front line pace men. It won't matter against the Windies though.

Re: Australian ODI XI - Selection Thread

White batting at 7 might suggest he will bowl a couple of overs.

Re: Australian ODI XI - Selection Thread

Even if you're extremely generous about Watson's current run of form, saying Hopes is a better bowler than Bollinger and Siddle is absurd.

Except White would not bat below Haddin and could come in above Hussey depending on match situation

That ODI team is the best in the world, I have no doubt about that.

The 4th World Cup in a row beckons.

Have you had a look at any of the other teams lately? I quite fancy the Sth African team that wiped their backsides with us in both series last summer.

As Boris pointed out, the bowling is not strong and that was shown up tonight. If the one-day specialist bowlers aren't going to be fit & in-form, we have some worrying to do.

Lucky Australia didnt bat White down at 7... :)

As for Hopes, a good choice for 12th man, McKay copped a bit of stick at the end but he took wickets and thats just as important

Re: Australian ODI XI - Selection Thread

My team posted before was a mistake there, meant to post that on the Pakistan thread, forgetting that the game was today.

And by the performance that the bowling side put up today... I just proved that Hopes is a better bowler than Bollinger, Siddle and McKay. Bollinger is the only one that did anything, and that wasn't all that spectacular. Nothing you would expect your opening, in form strike bowler to do. He got hammered for 8 runs an over for the first 3. The Pakistanis targetted Siddle and it paid off. The only thing McKay did was bowl a short and wide pie that should have been put away for a boundary, just an unforced mistake by the batsman. Hopes has rarely ever been comprehensively beaten like they were, the worst he does is doesn't get a wicket occasionally, but still keeps it to 4.5 an over. If he fails with the ball than the batting makes up for it. Having Watson as your best bowler that over after over looked like getting a wicket is not a good sign for a bowling attack. Bollinger is the only one that should get a look in with this team, and even then I think he could be pushed aside. You know your ODI team looks a little wrong when I would personally play that team in a Test. Needs a longer batting tail with Hopes, and a better bowling line up that doesn't need three dud batsman. You can't count on White to score a hundred every match, Batsman like Johnson, Lee and Hauritz are your only chances sometimes. What would Siddle, Bollinger and McKay do? Just another thing in the line up. The sooner Bracken, Lee and Johnson are back in the team the better. I'd even bowl Tait ahead of these guys now, fit or not.

That was a year ago, SA have one bowler in Steyn, the rest are run of the mill.

SA's form in ICC competitions is ordinary.

We won last years Champions Trophy easily.

Johnson would come back into our side, Lee once his over his injury would also have serious claims to push for the ODI side, he will probably retire after the ICC world cup next year.

Watson is improving greatly as a bowler, the emergence of White as a genuine striking option with the bat.

Our ODI team is improving, and is already a formidable opponent very well lead by Ricky Ponting.

On this evidence, and looking at the players to return we should be disappointed if we are not playing off in our 5th WC final in a row in a year and a bit.

We have already shown we are capable of playing ODI cricket in the subcontinent, where the WC will be held.

I think we are a very good chance.

Re: Australian ODI XI - Selection Thread

McKay is a decent batsman and Siddle recently won Australia a test with his batting but yeah pot them as if they are all no11s like McGrath

Plus the form Hopes showed the other day I cant see him being any good coming in needing 6+ runs an over at the end

But I do love how Hopes is so reliable that in one of his last ODIs, Siddle picked up 3 wickets whilst Hopes was belted for 7 an over

Boris, please stop writing so much, I see your posts and most of the time skip them if they are too long.

Alternatively, write in small paragrahs like I have in the above post, so much easier to read mate.

Re: Australian ODI XI - Selection Thread

What about Shaun Tait, his form in the 07 WC was our X factor.

His now a ODI specialist, surely we should be looking at him for future fixtures, his low slingly action combined with reverse swing would skittle teams in the subcontinent.

Has been belted around in the FRC, showing some form in the T20's but might be sign he even struggles bowling 10 decent overs

That's drawing particular games out. You can't say that after 12 matches an average of 45 with an E/R close to 6 is good. Can't see how they can continue him. 274 is a dangerous and hard target to get, just lucky a fellow statesman could step up for them both.

Always been a problem of mine, just like to back my posts up with too much evidence. I have been of late splitting them up in short paragraphs.

Sorry mate.

I could swear you were talking about Siddle there. :p

Re: Australian ODI XI - Selection Thread

The ODI team is absolutely great. Will be unbeatable if Lee and Bracken come back and get into form, or Tait comes back to the standard he was. Until then I wouldn't think to see them in the final of a World Cup.

Of course not, makes me wonder why Hopes kept getting picked when his average was just as poor around the same time and about half the series he has played in he has been bloody shocking with a very poor average

Oh thats right, he is supposed to also be a batsman who has only ever twice averaged above 30 in a series

As I said on the other thread, you can't use stats for Hopes. Does something good every game.

White averaged 12 after 4 games when batting in the same spot as Hopes does. Can't expect Hopes to average more than 20 when all he has to do is score 10 quick runs at the death.

The thing is though, he has a habit of scoring when needed. His nickname isn't Mr Fix It for nothing.

Plus he is a bowling all rounder anyway, bowls just as well as every other full time bowler... but he can be a pinch hitter or even an opening batsman (which he has done well to my knowledge). Stretches the batting right out.

The commentators tonight said the only reason he wasn't in the side was due to a hamstring injury suffered in the T20 the other night. Not sure if that is true, but I can see him coming back for the next game.
