OK to taunt Murali says MacGill

Australian leg-spinner Stuart MacGill believes there is nothing wrong with Australian crowds taunting Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan.

Full article here.

I have to say that this is a bit idiotic. It's one thing to have a bit of banter with the players but another altogether for a player to condone it. What would Jason Gillespie have to say if an England had said its fine for all the 'gypsy' taunts?

Re: OK to taunt Murali says MacGill

What Gypsy taunts? I never knew that Gillespie got gypsy taunts. ???

Re: OK to taunt Murali says MacGill

Back in the Ashes '05 it was fairly consistent, a lot of 'you live in a gypsy caravan' etc. Mainly due to his appearance. He was far from happy about it.

Re: OK to taunt Murali says MacGill

Well, I don't know what to think of this.

In one corner there is Stuey MacGill saying, go for it and sledge him all you want.

Then in the other corner there is Andrew Symonds saying leave the poor bloke alone.

Re: OK to taunt Murali says MacGill

Stuey Macgill is be so much unproffesional i reckon the Cricket Australian chiefs should do something about it, he deserves a fine or something or a damned telling off, it isnt ok to slag off another professional cricket, especially in the media!

Re: OK to taunt Murali says MacGill

This gives gives us young kids the impression that picking on innocent people is alright and is a good thing. Well it is not. Sportsmen need to be role models not saying we should be picking on people.

Re: OK to taunt Murali says MacGill

Yeah its really pathetic to make such a comment, if he doesn't feel that taunting Murali is wrong then he should have stayed quiet on that issue rather than encouraging it.

Re: OK to taunt Murali says MacGill

To be honest, Brett Lee has a tendency to run close to it, or atleast did with the old law ;)

The new one was brought into practise due to the likes of Lee, Murali and others who ran it close, and its been proved that Murali i niether a chucker nore illegal bowler!

And for a fellow professional to say it is ok to taunt him is not good, but then again, who knows Murali might thrive on the taunts and run through the Aussie pack ;)

Re: OK to taunt Murali says MacGill

Stuart Macgill = Aussie reject

Re: OK to taunt Murali says MacGill

Agree with Simon 100%. Telling people to have a go at someone isn't right. Cricket is a gentlemen's game and should be played like that. I am not saying banter is bad but telling people to pick on someone is definetly not a good idea.

Re: OK to taunt Murali says MacGill

Stuart MacGill is Warne's Number 2 if you know what I mean :p

Still, it's unacceptale and unsportsmanlike. Murali is innocent and shouldn't be taunted for someone he was never guilty of in the first place.

Re: OK to taunt Murali says MacGill

I agree with Austwic. On field sledging has become a common practice and won't affect a professional cricketer.I understand the crowd wanting to get into it to see how a cricketer reacts to it.A few days back Pietersen was booed by the Southafrican crowd in the game against South Africa. But defending name calling is certainly unwarranted.Or perhaps it's just one of those mind games that, Macgill hopes, will distract the great Murali.

Re: OK to taunt Murali says MacGill

shouldnt of said that but i suppose murali doesnt care much about it really, a bucket load of wickets, better than macgill by far lol :)

Re: OK to taunt Murali says MacGill

Oh yes remember it fondly!Especially at the Old Trafford test before the game he walks across the ground only to get hurls of abuse from all angles! He was far from happy!
