Post Pictures of your Kit!

Re: Post Pictures of your Kit!

With regards the balls on ebay - last year there seemed to be some fairly good ones, but I've noticed this year they're all those Davidson type and they're slightly smaller than a match ball and rock hard - probably not good for your bat. They're alright for bowling practice though - although I am slightly concerned about the size issue. I think that the way my fingers wrap around slightly smaller balls means I get a different amount of spin on them and then when it comes to a game situation I'm sure this works against me with the marginally larger balls. I think in my collection of 36? balls there are 12 what I would call proper sized balls and the rest are the mickey mouse small balls. If anyone comes across a supplier on ebay selling cheap "Proper size" balls let me know as I'd like to phase out the small balls.

Re: Post Pictures of your Kit!

Was going to post this earlier but got sidetracked - sportsoccer (or soccerworld, never know which) tend to sell Slazenger cricket balls at a very cheap rate.

Last time I went in they were selling full size balls for about £2.49 each. Not sure if they're still doing them at that rate but then they do tend to do a lot of clearance stuff.

Also, try your local small(ish) sports shop, last year (or the year before) I picked up 12 Fearnly cricket balls for £15 - they were good enough for 40 over friendlies and are used in the nets still now. The guy had them sitting on the shelf and was glad to get rid off - always worth a check if you're passing by one.

Re: Post Pictures of your Kit!

Tom last year "Sportsworld" (I think it's the company name and the shop name) bought out Slazenger and several other big name brands and sold off all of the existing stock at the end of the summer really cheap and yeah I picked up slazenger balls & Fearnley balls for the price you mentioned. But these are the slightly smaller balls as well or is it me being weird about balls? I'd stake money on the slazenger balls that were £2.50 or £2.99 being small - same weight, but just slightly smaller. Still okay for a game and to practice with - but I do notice a difference.

Re: Post Pictures of your Kit!

I think that you're either being unlucky or maybe have 'big hands'? There is a certain amount of variation in size allowed for a cricket ball, and it's not uncommon for certain balls to feel big or small, even from the same box. Without holding any of the balls myself it is hard to say (then again they'd likely feel different to me anyway -for example, I don't like the balls used in test matches, find them too light).

One theory may be that, as a spinner you're used to bowling with a slightly older ball that has lost most of it shine - they can often feel 'bigger' when compared with a new ball. Saying that, you're obviously using a mixture of old and new so it is a strange one.

Didn't know about Slazenger being taken over but would explain the cheap balls.

Re: Post Pictures of your Kit!

I'll have to measure the balls and photograph them somehow and show you. With regards my hands I've got probably medium sized hands there's no way they're big. It's weird that your saying that the expensive "test" quality balls feel light as the weight I'm sure is the one thing that is consistent surely?

Re: Post Pictures of your Kit!

There is some room to both weight and size:

For men's cricket, the ball must weigh between 5.5 and 5.75 ounces (155.9 and 163.0 g) and measure between 8 13/16 and 9 in (224 and 229 mm) in circumference.

So, there can be about 7g difference in weight and 5mm in circumference. Might not sound much but it sure can feel a lot.

Re: Post Pictures of your Kit!

Thought i'd grace your good selves with a pic of my kit. The pic shows my:
- Gray-Nicolls Powerbow Force
- Slazenger V500 Batting Pads
- Slazenger V500 Helmet
- Hunts County Thigh Pad
- Readers Mens Cricket ball
- Hunts County Arm Guard (I don't actually use it anymore, and have only used it in 2 games)

Here's also an old pic of my GN Powerbow before the pink grip started to rip at the top and was replaced by the yellow one:

I will soon be updating my kit with an Adidas large sweatband (Ian Bell styly ;)), some new Slazenger gloves and maybe a new Slazenger thigh pad. Slazenger's gloves, pads etc are extremely awesome; just need to get myself a Slaz bat :D.
