right time to attack

when batting I do not know the right time when to smack the ball or play it along the ground. When ever the ball is bowled slightly wide I try to smash and it pays off well but I want to know which other balls are the right balls to smash also which shot to play accordingly?

Re: right time to attack

In theory, pretty much every ball is there to be 'smashed' - it just depends on how talented you are.

I try to keep it simple, if the ball is wide then it's normally ok to go for, straight then I'll try to work it to leg. On the off stump then defend, unless its in the slot to be driven etc.

Try a few things out in nets and let us know how you get on!

Re: right time to attack

I usually give myself the frame of mind to last ten balls first when i get in. Then as you get more and more set, you start to see the ball better and things tend to click. Attacking from the off isnt something id consider unless i was feeling very confident.

Remember, you can play just as aggressively hitting ones and twos as you can hitting boundaries. If you play a few good shots and the field goes back for you, then you can really use this to your advantage. If there are gaps, some aggressive running and intelligent strokeplay can easily turn a few ones into twos or even a three. If you want to start getting a few more runs quite quickly, a few delicate deflections can be very effective. If you get a few wide balls, playing the ball with soft hands into the gaps down towards third man can be a good way of getting a few runs.

The best thing you can hope for is some 'buffet bowling'.

When Neil Harvey was batting poorly during the 1948 ashes series he asked his mate Sammy Loxton to go to Sir Donald Bradman with some advice for the young (18 year old) Harvey.. the Don said

"You tell your little mate that if he hits the ball on the ground he can't get out".. Harvey went on to score a vital first hundred in the next test.

That's as simple as it gets.. you average 99.94 in test cricket by always hitting the ball on the ground..

So attack by always hitting the ball on the ground. Just pick the gaps.

There might've been slightly more to it than that, but point taken:p

Improve your shot range, shot selection and placement in that order - then practice, practice, practice. Identify your shortcomings, your barriers - and then break them down!

But remember, it's no use having every shot in the book if you don't know when to use them. Come up with your own strategies of how to play different balls, built around knowledge of your own game. Visualise how you're going to do it!

I also try to give myself a goal to last ten balls but then a spinner comes on and lobs one up to me. I take the bait and go for the big shot sometimes it works but sometimes it sends me back to the sideline.

Re: right time to attack

Mostly batsmen will take their chances against spinners.
So watching the ball closely is very important and most important is the team requirement wether u should look for singles or go for the big hits.
Also practicing ur footwork against spinners in the nets will be a good exercise for ur batting.

Re: right time to attack

Try practicing in the nets with different line and lengths. Try to find when you feel most comfortable playing shots. Thats your zone. So when next time the ball is in your zone play attacking shots.
