I've gone for overall balance, as well as a team i'd love to watch play cricket.
Gavaskar opens with Sutcliffe. Gavaskar is one of the great openers, because he opened for India at a time when there were GREAT fast bowlers bowling. The WIs, Hadlee, Imran, Lillee and Thomo, and Gavaskar averaged 50+ opening against them. Sutcliffe comes in with Gavaskar, a man who averaged over 60 and never failed in a series. He had a great defence and punished the loose ball.
Ponting comes in at three and not a lot needs to be said about him. A supreme player of quick bowling, he is an ideal number three. Averaging 55. Scores quickly, the greatest pull shot i've seen and a gun fielder in the covers or at point.
G.Chappell is at 4. A craftsman, one of the greatest batsman Australia has produced. Played cricket shots the "correct" way. All class and timing, as well as averaging over 50 and being a brilliant slip fielder.
Graham Pollock comes in at 5 and rivals Sobers as the greatest left hander ever. Played 23 tests and averaged over 60. A powerful batsman who should have played more cricket. One of SA's famous cricketing Pollocks.
And when you've gotten through the top 5, in walks Viv Richards, my favourite player of all. A brutal batsman who combined arrogance with skill and succeeded. One of the great sights in cricket history. I'd love to watch him bat with Pollock.
Imran bats at 7. His batting average of 37 makes him ideal for this spot, but he is in the team as a bowler. His bowling average was 22, which makes him arguably the greatest all-rounder to play the game. Interestingly, in his last ten years of international cricket he played 51 Tests, averaging 50 with the bat and 19 with the ball.
Alan Knott is my keeper, the greatest keeper to spin and the man suited to keeping to Underwood. A nimble, brilliant keeper on bad pitches, he was also a handy bat, averaging 32 and scoring 5 centuries.
Underwood is my spinner, and on a deteriorating 5th day pitch he would clean up a team. Bowled reasonably quick left arm spin, and excelled in conditions suited to spin.
My two opening quicks are Garner and Donald. Although they are both right armers, they contrast each other well. Garner bowled from a massive height at pace and with accuracy, while Donald was shorter, but lightning quick and genuinely scary. Both were accurate and tight and their averages and strike rates indicate they are in the elite of fast bowlers. Garner was like McGrath but better!
I must apologise for my poor effort on this thread - I was overseas on holiday and had no internet for 10 days. If it would not be an issue I would like to wait till the end and pick my side from the left overs. I can only apologise for it and to all the poster on it.
