Specific rehab following knee surgery...

So here we are again, a full year after the initial post before my first operation.
Since the summer there have been some ups and downs, but all in all I am hoping to start proper cricket training before Easter. The knee itself is very stable, helped by the full range of exercises I am doing now...to be honest I am now in a groove where working out is a part of my everyday routine instead of a slog. My last visit to the doc was just before christmas and I have another appointment next month, I am allowed to do everything sports-wise, apart from hard impact turning and twisting. As for wicket-keeping, who knows...the feeling is very unusual when I'm down in the crouch but there is no pain, I am still wondering whats going to happen when an inside edge goes through and I have to change direction quickly...we'll have to see (at a pinch, I could revert to specialist batting again, but keeping is an important thing for me).

The only negatives are a grinding feeling sometimes (according to the doc this is probably a piece of debris which will be worn away in time) and a pretty bad jolt sometimes if I land on a straight leg (i.e. just before you would hyperextend the knee).

Next month I will learn of the wonders of kinesio taping. Until then, my friends!

Sounds great Snicko! I wish you well for the season.

Always remember to stretch your quads... always! This will help with the prospect of keeping. If possible, try to get some manual limphatic drainage and drink loads of water.

Look forward to hearing how it goes.

Back again!

Had the docs appointment last week, all is good (except for the problems with the stitch as detailed before, the rest of the stitches are going to be cut out under local anaesthetic in a couple of weeks). Kinesio taping was something new...will have to try it out and see if it works for me because I have my doubts, to be honest. Now have the all-clear to start all exercises, just in time for outdoor practice. Will of course keep you up to date after I try keeping for the first time in nearly two years.

Good luck mate hope it goes well and you ease back into your keeping with no problems.

Well, here we are at the end (for now) of a long year and a half. The time has come to draw a line under the story...

The thought that was always there, bugging me at the start, frightening me at every doctors visit and then, finally, requiring acceptance in the last two months, has come to pass...I have been forced to knock cricket on the head.

Basically, it's the result of a lot of things. I had always wondered, what will it be like when the knee gets tested out for the first time...well I found out not in the nets or in a game, but carrying the ironing board downstairs! Basically, two months ago I slipped down the stairs and landed in a heap at the bottom. Bruised heel, bruised face (from the stairs), chunk out of my head from the flying ironing board and a burning, crack in "the" knee.

Fortunately, nothing serious, bone bruising left right and centre but the implant stood up. But the worst thing was hearing the doctor, "It will always be a weak point".

I have tried everything, back in training, got fitter than I have ever been, had voluntary cryotherapy and physio...and still everything is not right. At least I can say I tried...

I have also noticed that I have got older since all this started, the point where the reflexes go and your middle gets heavier regardless of diet and exercise. Also a contributing factor to my decision.

Basically, I can't risk being a cripple and not enjoying life with my kids just for the sake of playing...it is a sad decision and a loss of something important, but one I have come to accept.

For now, I am umpiring more and more, including important national fixtures over here. That, and other club admin, will have to keep me going. I think umpiring will play a much larger role in my future.

Again, thanks to all who helped...it truly made a big difference.

Cheers
Mark
