Subbies Thread

It's been a great start to the season, but very rarely is the premiership flag awarded in November. We've had a good start, but several other clubs also look very good, Werribee chief amongst them. And I would never discount Melton, despite a massive personnel change in the off season. Bayswater could be the flyers this year, and as we all know from previous seasons, if you can qualify for March, get there in form and full fitness, add a little luck on the day, you can take home the cup!

Yeah I've read and heard it a few times, probably a little over the top to be naming someone "the great man". Anyway back to the cricket, who's got some early tips for finalists in each group?
I think Plenty Valley, Caulfield and Ormond will be sides to beat I the South North group, Werribee will win the other.

Gee wiz you blokes get given and inch and take a mile.

I do agree that Werribee look the goods in the East/West group. I am very intrigued as to why Travaglia and Pinwill played in the 2nd's on the weekend, can anyone shed any light?

wowee thats an interesting one? Maybe they had to go to a wedding or something and leave early?

RPBroady's dismissal for 45 on Sunday at Dempster Park could have you thinking it was on a sticky. Didn't appear to play that way when I called in to have a look -- more to do with accurate persistant bowling by Khan and Ughriadar downwind and 'Capper' keeping it tight upwind. Looks like Sunshine have covered Webby's loss with the ball at least. Dempster often a graveyard for Broady and the loss has, I think, caused it to drop 3 places in the ladder.

Would have thought the deck would be better on Sunday than Saturday, was certainly the case at Coburg, although the Burgers were batting.

Looks like Weapo is doing a pretty good job with the Crows.

some of the stronger clubs starting to open a gap in the club championship. Are Plenty Valley creating a new benchmark is subbies cricket by such making big scores?

11.30am inspection of my decks reveals no hope of introducing the heavy roller till Friday am at the earliest. This bleak weather not helpful--coolest Nov to date in 20 yrs. Any further rain--off to the races Sat. 'Bleak City' is living up to what my Sydney friends call Melb. What can I say!!

Realistically, no deck is going to be in tip top nick. It will be interesting to see what happens. A 'report to grounds' may result in results being determined by the toss of a coin!

Like you, I believe in the subbies 'play at all costs mantra' (your words in a previous post). Sometimes, the team asked to bat on a sticky ends up with an outright win when it would otherwise have been unlikely. By contrast, the VTCA has already called off the coming weekend. Bit premature I think, for a pitch providing acceptable playing conditions can be prepared provided conditions allow the heavy roller to compact the profile from as late as the day before the match. As I am only curating in the VTCA this season I am doing it easy this week, but have offered to give a mate curating in the subbies a chop out tomorrow.

Will be interested to see which councils will prepare wickets.

Does anyone on this forum know which clubs rely on municipal support in pitch preparation for their main oval? I think I know of 5 that don't--- Melton, Yarraville, Sunshine, Kingston Saints and Endeavour Hills. Any more in this category? A comparison between the percentage of club prepared pitches available tomorrow as compared to the percentage of council prepared pitches will only be possible if we know the above.

After a majority of games getting on this past weekend, the next question is why were 3rd and 4th XI games cancelled? I know our ground could have played, as could have Kews. If we encourage clubs to get covers for their second ground, why should these teams miss out on a possible game. Needs to be one in all in.

Our 3rds and 4ths would have been available.

Reserves

So would Lloyd(Sunshine) and Skinner Reserves (Yarraville) despite neither ground having covers. Perhaps, when only late-in the-week preparation is possible, the comp. exec. wishes the curators to give their priority to getting the main ground pitch playable. Not a problem at the above clubs, however, as there are separate club-appointed curators for each ground. The Yarraville players call Skinner Reserve 'The Bronx' and the incidence of property theft, vandalism and arson in the locality is a problem. For this reason, the club is reluctant to cover the pitch. Fortunately, Yarraville 3rds and 4ths will shortly be relocated to a new facility much nearer the main oval.

Black Rock is not the Bronx but covers would be at high risk. Looking forward to seeing James Miller as a guest for Noble Park. Why do we still have guest players ? Should only be players who have played for the club.
