Chaps I thought we could get back to senior action,
NS div is really tight at the moment!
Plenty Valley and Caulfield still out in front and look like the top contenders.
Malvern keep winning and look like they have wrapped up a top 4 finish.
Ormond have come from nowhere to be 4th, this weeks game with Caulfield is huge.
Balwyn have really been a surprise this year and look like they will be a finals contender.
Brighton very hot and cold with two outright wins so far but a huge game with Malvern is looming.
Brunswick losing to Moorabbin was a complete shocker and looks to have really dented their finals chances
Preston, Ivanhoe are outside chances to make as well.

Some season defining games this weekend!
Kew V PV - PV does it easy
Kingston V Elsternwick - Kingston will get over their thrashing from Ormond to win this one.
Caulfield V Ormond - Ormond in an upset here, unbeaten after Christmas and will get the chocolates.
Brunswick V Preston - Huge game for both clubs here, going to go with Brunswick just.
Coburg V Balwyn - Tipping Coburg in another upset here
Malvern V Ivanhoe - Malvern do it east.
Brighton V Moorabbin - Brighton should be to strong but wouldnt be surprised if the Binners kept up the good form.

Moorabbin seem a better side without Pradeep. However expect the Tonners to get up. Also think Elsty better with C O'neill and may push for outright. Not sure how a finalist from last year can fall so far. Ormond will not beat Caulfield unless Hansen is playing. Also tipping Balwyn and Preston. Think Ivanhoe might surprise this game if can get Alford cheaply . Like to tip against PV but cannot.

Was Pradeep playing last week?
Elsternwick have no bowling to speak of which is why they are battling so much.
Interesting you have gone with Preston, any reason?
Agreed Ormond must have Hanson to beat Caulfield.

Croydon have jumped from 18 to 28 points and are now a possibility of finishing in the final 6 according to my reckoning. In the last 3 rounds they play 2 teams below them on the ladder, Yarraville and Melton, and Box Hill and Endeavour Hills play each other rd 12.

Apparently Pradeep has gone back to Sri Lanka, Did not play round 10. Happy to be corrected, Elsternwick have had ordinary bowling but C O'Neill now back and Boettcher has had a good season. Their minor counties leggie Pardesai is starting to workout how to bowl on Subbies wickets so expect much stronger performances. Preston are always competitive and Brunswick are very hot/cold with the ball. Moorabbin getting 200+ for not many shows that.

If you had/have a kid playing juniors in the morning and open-age cricket in the afternoon would you allow, or not allow, the kid to play open-age in 40C this Sat? Interested to know where you guys would draw the line given the diversity of views recently posted on extreme conditions that applied during the Hatch. I appreciate the kids who double up may in the main be u17, but they are still legally minors and under parental control at that age. No need to confine your thinking to the subbies comp either--minors playing for extended periods in extreme heat is the issue here.

If I has a son of that age I would let him play but would ensure he was well prepared both before the day and on the day.

I believe that the 3rd and 4ths should be called off is the forecast is for 40 degrees this Saturday. There are many older and younger players in these grades and some of the grounds have less than ideal facilities. It is also dangerous for scorere and umpires.
As Westland points - we all have junior cricketers playing is these grades and some boys will be spending 9 or 10 hours in the field and whilst some can cope others will struggle.
1sts and 2nds should play but 3rds and 4ths should revert to a 1 dayer the following week.

All very good and valid points raised about the older and younger players - what about the concept of if the weather will be over 40 (or 35) that 3rd & 4th XI matches revert to one day fixtures on both weeks.
This limits the time spent on the field for all players, but doesn't take away the actual opportunity to play. It could be 40 overs or even 35, but I'm sure we all agree we want to play as much as possible - perhaps just be a little smarter to ensure our health is always the number one priority.

That is garbage, if I was taken off the ground because it hit 38 I'd be disgusted.

I'm going to have to agree. Its a summer sport, hydrate before the game, drinks every 15 overs and nobody will complain with drinks being run out in between that, we are men playing a man's game and from time to time its going to get hot, so be it!

Of course, if a parent refuses to let his kid play, any opinions we may have on it being a ''man's game'', or whatever, is irrelevant. And what if a parent refused to let his kid play on the 2nd day of a 2 dayer due to extreme heat? I know at Premier Cricket when players are called up for state duties making them unavailable mid-match, Premier clubs are allowed to replace them, generally by bringing up a player from the twos for the second day's play. Perhaps we nowadays need to be more flexible and innovative than in the past due to changes in community attitudes: Such as, say, when it is known for sure the weather on day 2 will be extreme, the subbies issuing a directive that clubs may opt to take up a player from the first day's play in the 4ths to play day 2 in the thirds in place of the kid who withdrew, and be permitted to find someone to fill the vacancy in the 4ths. I do not believe this arrangement should extend to 1sts and 2nds, nor to open-age players in any grade.
The VTCA's extreme heat policy is clear-cut, but inflexible, so I have some sympathy for Herbert's point of view. Again, I point out inconsistencies between competitions on such matters add to CV's justification for seeking a re-vamp of metropolitan community cricket.

Sledge, please explain how this works in practice. Are you saying there is a thermometer at every ground?

Last week I looked up the VTCA's heat policy. Not quite a thermometer at every ground as you will see when you visit the comp's website, but you were definitely on the right track. Curator who looks after a VTCA ground told me he was yesterday informed by the club the VTCA is considering calling off tomorrow, but he will still have to keep preparing the pitch in case they don't. Council's out our way don't prepare pitches, but I do know the local Council has an extreme heat policy making me wonder whether, in areas where councils prepare pitches, curators are require to knock off when the temp exceeds 36C that being the case for outside workers at the municipality where I live

There are different regions in the Metro are, for example Moorabbin, Laverton. Each ground is put in a region and its the scorer who rings the number say every 15 minutes, if it gets to 38 players must leave the ground, if the temp drops they go back, just like wet weather only covers aren't needed. Last Sunday at Moorabbin at midday it was 31 and Viewbank it was 40.

Until a player drops dead due to the heat. Times have changed, associations ad clubs can't afford to risk the legal system and the impact of being sued if a player is injured, or heaven forbid dies on the field

I think you are correct, and that you are not on your own, given the extreme heat policy announcement now on the subbies home page. A sensible compromise in my view. Still to be sorted though, is what should happen when parents refuse to let their kids play open-age on the 2nd day of a 2 dayer due to extreme heat. Do you think the suggestion I made in response to YWL has merit?

Pradeep back today. Interesting to see Premier bat [Prahran] and ex Vic Futures player Jack Taylor playing for Moorabbin. Struggled with the bat today.

Congratulations to Oakleigh for another win in the T20 comp. Who were the 3 under 21's so we can follow their development and performances ?
