Super Eights - Ireland v England
Did not see a thread so I will start up and try to give running commentary as much as I can. Here is the action so far, from skysports coverage:
OVER 11: Langford-Smith: 4-1-0-0-2-0
52-2: KP has already started playing a shot at just about every ball, four more are dispatched through the leg-side. Bell also gets in on the act with a square-drive for a couple.
Malcolm Ward strikes a blow for national pride: 'We are sounding like the clowns who booed off the footie team on Wednesday. Long way to go yet, shouldn't we be getting behind our team instead of slating them? Proud to be ENGLISH, COME ON THE LADS.'
OVER 10: Rankin: 0-0-0-4-3-0
45-2: This is not a pitch for bowling short on, Rankin drops it in half-way down and KP has all the time in the world to drill a pull shot to the midwicket boundary. KP gets another three after advancing down the pitch and working the ball into the leg-side.
Brendon Moran (from Ireland) says: 'We don't play curling or polo internationally over here - so dont give up on ALL team sports. - Come on you boys in green.'
OVER 9: Langford-Smith: 0-1-0-0-1-0-
38-2: KP is already giving Langford-Smith the charge but England still haven't settled, they still appear very nervous.
Martin Wilson comments: 'We no longer dominate darts, Barneveld the dutchman is champion. Ken Doherty is the current No.1 at snooker and he is Irish too.'
OVER 8: Rankin: +-+-1-4-0-0-3-0
36-2: Bell edges over the slips for four and collects another three with a well-controlled pull as Rankin dropped too short.
Chris Brandon says: 'I don't know what all the self loathing is about? We have a fantastic mixed doubles badminton team at the moment' True, but we were talking about sport...
OVER 7: Langford-Smith: 0-+-0-0-0-0-0
26-2: Should England have batted first today? Easy to criticise in hindsight, Sky Sports commentator Nasser Hussain thinks it was the wrong call from Vaughan, not sure I agree.....yet.
OVER 6: Rankin: 1-W-0-2-0-0
25-2: Wicket! Vaughan pushes his wrists forward and gets a thin edge through to wicketkeeper Niall O'Brien as the ball bounced more than he expected. Here comes KP with England in trouble....
Plenty of English self-loathing coming in on the FEEDBACK. Gary Watton comments: 'Having lost to Northern Ireland at football in September 2005, and then losing to Ireland at rugby union recently for the fourth successive time, if England lose to Ireland at cricket, then the country should give up on team sport, and concentrate on dominating the world at darts and snooker.'
OVER 5: Langford-Smith: 4-0-+-0-+-2nb-0-1-0
22-1: Bell drives a half-volley through extra cover for his first boundary. Sky Sports commentator Ian Botham is banging on about the lack of hundreds from Vaughan and Bell in ODIs (none between them) and lamenting the absence of Marcus Trescothick from the top of the English order, tell me about it Beefy.....
Alan Marchant ponders: 'Anything less than a resounding victory for England today would complete the sporting misery - rugby, football and cricket - what next?'
OVER 4: Rankin: 0-0-0-0-0-0
12-1: Rankin is joining Derbyshire next season and he looks a very good prospect, tall with the ability to extract surprising bounce from a good length. An Irish Andrew Caddick perhaps. Keeps Vuaghan pinned back on his crease during a maiden over.
Not much love for Joyce on the e-mails after his 'performance' today, already the calls are flooding in for the return of Andrew Strauss at the top of the English batting order.
OVER 3: Langford-Smith: 1-0-0-0-0nb-1-1
12-1: This is only the second international match to be held at Providence Stadium and the expectation is for a slow, low surface, but it is certainly doing a bit for Ireland's seamers early on. Langford-Smith directs a fearsome stare in Bell's direction following another play-and-miss. Nervous start by England.
OVER 2: Rankin: W-0-0-+-+-0-0-0
8-1: Wicket! Horrible misjudgement from Joyce as he leaves a ball that curves back off the seam and removes his off-stump as he plays no stroke at Boyd Rankin's first delivery. Rankin nipping it around off the seam in that over and also goes past Ian Bell's outside edge.
OVER 1: Langford-Smith: 0nb-0-0-1-4-0-0
6-0: Former Irishman Ed Joyce faces up to the first ball delivered by David Langford-Smith, it's a no ball that Joyce plays-and-misses at. Joyce gets off the mark by running the ball down to third man and then Vaughan gets England going properly with an elegant flick to the midwicket boundary.
Chris Hawk is the most confident of the early e-maillers, saying: 'England are going to smash the greens off the park today!' Whereas Andrew Greer thinks: 'Ireland could give the English a good go here. Talk of foreigners in the Irish squad has got them quite fired up, especially when England are sporting Pietersen and Joyce.'
1420h (BST):England are in an unenviable position today, win and they will get little credit, lose and the roof will have fallen in on their World Cup campaign. For Ireland, they will revel in the role of underdog, no doubt motivated by all the patronising coverage given to the 'minnows' during the initial group stage. I expect this to be a very feisty encounter.
