Taking Care of your spinning finger

just thought I'd resurrect this old thread I started. I still have problems with my finger tearing though its much less pronounced these days and its mostly thanks to a wonderful chap who sadly passed away this year, Mr Richie Benaud. I was lucky enough to have a conversation with a third party who shall remain nameless but you've probably all read his book. I'll leave you to guess who. Anyway he was kind enough to pass onto me Richie's email address!! I spent ages composing an appropriate correspondence asking about his timaru wonder cure for spinning cuts and I linked him to the MCC leg spin masterclass I had uploaded to youtube for him to take a look at as I thought he'd find it interesting. Six long months passed and I had given up on him ever replying, thinking he must be very busy and doesn't have time to respond to every Tom, Dick and Harry who contacts him. Then out of nowhere one morning I found this in my inbox:

Dear Mr Lanchbury,

I'm sorry it has taken so long to reply to your email but I
am way behind with Richie's correspondence as he continues
to recover from health problems related to a car accident
last year.

The finger remedy was given to Richie by a chemist in
Timaru, New Zealand, who said he had found it beneficial for
the treatment of leg ulcers for ex-servicemen, particularly
if they were suffering from the after-effects of being
gassed.

Oily Calamine Lotion BPC '54 (or whichever the equivalent is
in 2014)
Boracic Acid Powder

Rub the lotion into the wound and then gently dab off the
oil which comes to the surface. Rub in the boracic acid
powder so that it forms a waxy filling in the wound. Keep
doing this as much as possible and definitely whenever there
is a recurrence of the skin tearing or cracking. Make sure
you keep the waxy substance filling the hole all the time.
Don't be misled by the fact it sounds very simple, but it
certainly works for torn spinning fingers and we hope it
helps you.

Thank you for sending the four-part MCC Masterclass links.
We both enjoyed watching them again.

Kind regards.

Daphne Benaud

Suffice it to say I was speechless. This doesn't differ greatly from explanations I have since read in his own autobiography and a couple of other places but all the same I'm grateful to have heard the method directly from the horses mouth as I was never convinced that it was quite as simple as it sounded. So there you go, just wanted to share something quite unique and useful with you all, it would be a great shame for spinners lore like this to disappear with them.

Where do you think you can get Oily Calamine Lotion BPC '54 from?

Also known as Acidum boricum, boracic acid, hydrogen borate and orthoboric acid.

As GoldenArm says, you can buy it from any chemist. It has mild antiseptic and antifungal properties; good for minor burns and cuts. However, DO NOT apply to wounds.

Although I do recommend it, please bear in mind that Long-term exposure to boric acid may cause kidney damage and, eventually, kidney failure.

No problems with the skin on my spinning finger but I have knackered the ligaments or something. The moment I bowl a leg-break it feels like I've sprained my finger and it's like that for the rest of the week, I've taken a month or two away from bowling and the moment I come back and bowl a leggie it happens again. Getting old is the worst

I'm going to have to learn to bowl left handed :(

I broke my spinning finger one summer, I just changed my grip and bowled off my middle finger. If anything, my bowling improved. Have you tried that?

Bowling without using my ring finger doesn't feel right, can't get nearly the same revs on the ball. Feels like I'm sending down carrom balls rather than leg-breaks at times.

Brad Hogg and Bevan bowled left-arm chinaman, if Aussies can do it then it can't be that difficult.

Nah, winter nets starting soon so I've got plenty of time to work on it. I could always learn to bat but where's the fun in that

if its really that bad I'd definitely be seeking medical advice and looking for a good surgeon mate. might take you a while to recover if you needed an operation or something but in the long run surely makes sense to get a diagnosis before worrying about changing how you bowl?

oh no!

Two creams which I cannot possibly say would work but I'd give a go if I had the issue are ozonated olive oil and the mafactive gcmaf cream. The OOO is a potent form of oxygen therapy. The gcmaf is something special our immune systems can produce. I am having astounding results with it for another totally unrelated condition. There are testimonials here which may seem incredible but I can report the same for my CFS http://creamfeedback.weebly.com/

No idea about that gcmaf stuff but oxygen therapy via rubbing cream on your finger sounds like some right old alternative 'medicine' nonsense
