Test XI Selection Thread

Why would you drop hughes we need to start giving people a chance bailey is good but to old. we need to start building from the start agar is good keep him in so he gets experince. bring back david warner and get hughes opening drop rogers to 4th and usman at 3 and also bring in faulkner he can bowl and knows how to hold his wicket while scoring runs. use agar as allrounder and bring lyon in or ashton turner.
Khawaja is rubbish he shouldn't be there he is far too impatient. Maybe he is a ODI or T20 player

Never been totally sold on Khawaja but he did show some composure in the the 2nd innings at least compared to the other clowns, deserves a go.

If he continues to play this inconsistently in the next 3 or so games i would say he should be removed
yer if he can make starts and do better then the others remove them before him. shane Watson needs to get his act together he is getting starts and getting out he doesnt bowl for long i think its time to say goodbye to him

Agree, of all the players under the scope Watson has to be No:1. he is no kid, his record is poor, his form is terrible and he is still getting out the same way as 4 years ago. As for the young players just give it some real time playing in the same position and not moving them around the batting order because Clarke can not decide what to do or the next flavour of the month is here. They will never build confidence with the current chop and change

he problem is too many players are focusing on t20 and they are playing too aggressively at the ball (eg. shane watson)

I did laugh when Bumble commentating said about Watson something like "I don't know the bloke but I bet that he just loves the bowling machine. Sitting there all day smashing the ball all day straight forward down the V".

I agree that Watson has to go, the only problem is who do you bring in? Warner is too aggressive and inconsistent, he'd be better suited down the order against the older ball.

Michael Clarke has earned his spot in the side. He has played consistently well (I am not just looking at last year) through his career. I do not believe he is a good captain though. The only reason he is the captain is because there were no other low-30yo in the side who had been playing for a long time

He's a reasonable captain, better than Ponting. Unfortunately he doesn't have the cattle in the batting line-up and has to rely on himself too much to make runs.

Yeah Australia have the pace bowlers, but they need the batsmen

Please, he is a terrible captain. He has no fresh ideas with the team down though his strategy is not his problem. He has divided the team and got rid of players. If you consider the mess he made over Katich who is still playing and making 200's, Huss might have stayed a bit longer had the atmosphere been there and this whole Clarke/Watson faction carry on in the team is a disaster. These are the result of a poor leader and weak personality. Imagine we could have been playing this series with a team that looked like;

Katich
Watson
Clarke
Hughes
Hussey
Warner
Wade
Pattinson
Siddle
Harris
Lyon
This is not a lot different just has so much more spine to it but some player simply are not going to play with this bloke and other would be happy to knife him. That is not leadership that is reality TV.

I suspect they may stick with Agar.

Warner was dropped for belting Root. He made a score and then tells everyone he is a reformed person.
Then he has to be seperated from striking a South African player. Get him on the plane back to Australia, get some anger management counselling and not to play for Australia until he has successfully completed the treatment.

Off-field he might be a poor leader yes, that's a fair enough assessment. On-field he does a reasonable job. Clarke rotates the bowlers well, makes good bowling changes and is fairly astute with his field placings. He also shows a willingness to attack at times rather than simply defend until something happens.

He is far from a terrible captain on the field.

I agree. This series is just about done anyway, may as well get him right for the home series although I still don't think he should be anywhere near the test team.

The question is how much longer are we to tolerate the failure of Watson before he is dropped. Hughes was dropped and has played with much more potential that Watson or maybe they plan to put him in as opener for Watson though being fair he does have a slightly better average this tour of 25.6 against 20.9 for Hughes.

I hope not for much longer. He's really struggling and just isn't contributing anything to the team at this point and hasn't done so for quite a considerable period of time. It's also leading to the team losing early wickets which further adds to the pressure in the middle order.

The thing is, who comes back in if you drop Watson? You have Cowan, but he was in worse form until that recent warm-up game. You could promote Warner and bring in someone to the middle order but you'll most likely have the same problem again at the top.

As we are on tour there is little in the way of options. Just leave it alone now and hope like hell he finds some form for the remainder of the tour. Still dont agree with dropping Hughes for Warner. They never gave him a chance to settle then out he went again. What for Khawaja? will he be given a chance to make the spot his or is it musical chairs again.
