Re: trouble batting

Should really try to have a consistent backswing (as it's now termed) in order to help the repetition. After all a lot of cricket is about being able to replicate an action time and time again!

Re: trouble batting

Balance and watching the ball. If you're off balance then you'll increase the chance of the shot going wrong. If you're not watching the ball then you'll decrease your chance of actually hitting it.

each to their own i guess..... if it works then dont fix it.

Why so dimissive? I haven't tried to force my opinion on anybody, merely giving an answer to a question.

The best way to set yourself up for a shot is with a consistent backswing that brings the bat down straight. That's all, if you do something different and it works, fine but I thought the idea of this place was to share the best way of doing things?

Re: trouble batting

how do i practice these things on my own and with other people, and also is there any really good drills that i should do before i go into bat or even at practices?

i wouldnt say dissmissive, merely my own point of view. I'm comfortable with my back swing, and its not the same for every ball or bowler. Its what ever feels comfortable for the batsmen.

Its like trying to change a bowlers action, its better to tweak it rather than teach them completely new tricks, and gradually improve technique! but on the other hand it does not have to be straight out of a book to work well!.....

Re: trouble batting

If you're looking to correct your back lift, practice batting in front of a mirror so you can look at where your back lift is every time and you can correct it accordingly.

Re: trouble batting

I've found myself that unless I really concentrate I get bowled. I think this explains why I bat much better in nets than in games - once I go out to the middle in live action my head is all over the place and I don't know what I'm supposed to be doing - most of the time I just freeze and end up doing nothing - hence getting bowled ::)

Try to have a plan before going in to bat - even if it's just to block the first ball. It helps me to focus enough to actually play it - and that's gotta help.

Re: trouble batting

I don't know why you have to think so much while batting.

It doesn't matter what backlift you have, look at the international players: Bradman had a baseball style blift, lara had a different one, craig white I guess hasn't got much of a backlift, virender sehwag has a golf swing style backlift, ponting has his own backlift, sachin has his own version and so do michael clarke, symonds etc.

VVS Laxman, who performs well mostly in Australia only, has a small backlift. However, he does get runs. It might be the result of playing on fast pitches. All players have developed their style by focusing on what they want the ball to do. Placement, hitting it hard etc.

I'd say the most important thing is to watch the ball carefully, and know where to hit. It's good to look at the field and program some shots into your mind on a certain pitch (e.g. pull if it's short, pull only to midwicket, or pull only above midwicket). Look at the gaps, not the fielders.

Re: trouble batting

Those anyone have any other ideas of why i have been batting so badly and if i posted a video of my batting would people be able to help me?

Re: trouble batting

my backlift has a closed face which means it comes down straight its good for driving but not good for hooking and pulling, shud i open the face to the slips more?

Re: trouble batting

The biggest tip anyone could possibly give you is to stay balanced.

You're still young, and as such, basic things like your stance, body position and back lift, etc aren't hard wired just yet.

My advice, which i'm sure others will disagree with: With a bat, find the stance that best allows you to move in all directions the most efficiently (generally with your feet slightly more than shoulder width apart, a slight lean forward [knees foward, butt back, leaning forward atyour hips, not flattening your back], knees and shoulders aligned, weight spread relatively evenly through your feet, a good posture is essential as it allows for the best interaction with the ground.); your backswing will come down to personal preference, (I prefer to have my bat coming down in line with first or second slip - I find that when it's coming down any wider, my balance is affected.); Ensure your head is still and are eyes level; Add a bowler; Practice, practice, practice, practive, repeat ad nauseum.

And ultimately remember: Don't worry about anything that you can't control - Sometimes you go through entire seasons where you cop an absolute jaffer 5 balls into the start of your innings: It's not your fault.
