UK Politics?

Re: UK Politics?

I think Car Road Tax is a farce! £205 a year and my local roads are a Joke! i'd like to know where the money goes!

I would prefer to do it the french way! less road ax and more tolls!

and tyres are not cheap to replace nowadays when you hit a pot hole!

Re: UK Politics?

Considering we have less than half the land mass and the same kind of population of France I don't think we do too bad. Despite the fact they've got twice us much space as us they still manage to have twice as many accidents as we do. That may be in part due to the fact that our roads are possibly in good order due to the fact that we pay a fair bit of tax? Local road conditions are an issue for local councils I think and not the highways agency?

If road tax is so painful - I think the government is trying to encourage people to downsize their cars - so if you drive a less polluting car of 1000cc or under you pay a lot less tax and you'd save on petrol. Diesel is also cheaper and so too Propane gas vehicles?

Tolls may be the answer but I think there's a perception that they would be economically damaging in the short term?

the biggest change that needs to happen is the scrapping of the winner takes all system of voting. Labour said when they first came to power they would change to a more proportional system.
This is the system proposed
http://www.electoral-reform.org.uk/votingsystems/systems4.htm#AV+

This would end the domination of labour and conservative and instead get people to vote for the actual candidates they prefer.Smaller parties could compete with the big guys and have more say. The candidates in turn would have much more incentive to represent their local constituency instead of selling out/backing down to the Party whips. The problems mainly seem to happen when there is not proper debate as it is squashed by the Party system. As in the proposal to invade Iraq.

Unfortunately, proportional representation in it's purer forms doesn't work too well, as has been shown by Italy since the second world war. Something like 72 new governments in 63 years says a lot, and they can never seem to get one lot out on top in the general elections. This means that tiny little parties and independents joining coalitions decide who is in power, not the voters. In theory it's great and I'm all for it but in practice nothing gets done as no one side has the power to end a debate decisively. I think it'll be the big talking point in politics for a good few years to come.
