very late cut

Hi
I was batting a year or so ago and I rmember that one ball was very wide and slow so I waited till it had passed my stumps before I cut it very late and over the slips.
My swinging bat just missed the wicket-keeper's head. He complained and said it was dangerous and illegal.
Was he right or was it incorect technique or gamemanship or his part?

Re: very late cut

Not illegal as far as I know, more his issue for standing up to the stumps. I've seen keepers hit in the face before now, hazard of the job.

I'd say that you probably had the technique a little wrong, in that you waited a fraction too long before playing it, but you can work on that.

Re: very late cut

Its legal, its a technique I use to bowlers who either get late movement or spinners who like to push it through a bit quicker. It allows me to make sure it isn't gunna go anywhere near my stumps and, with it being a fraction behind the stumps i tend to go at the ball a bit harder so if i do edge, its far too quick/hard to catch most time.

Keep it up, if the the 'keeper gets hit, its his outlook.

Interesting!

as a Batsmen i dont have aproblem with palying the shot!

But as a keeper it is a little worrying! and Annoying! after all i'm not allowed to take the ball infront of the stumps so why should you be able to hit it????

Re: very late cut

The late cut is used to great effect in international cricket but it is the hardest shot in the book for club cricketers to be effective with. I am not sure what the keeper is complaining about but when the late cut is used to great effect the ball is hit before the ball is behind the stumps.

Probably the most frustrating shot in cricket by far. Kids in the net will play delicate late cut after late cut, no pace whatsoever being bowled to them or generated off their bat. They then walk out in a game, do the exact same shot in the middle that they have been doing for years in the net with "great effect" and they are caught in the slip, wondering what they have done wrong.

It wouldnt upset me to see the late cut not discussed very much.

Re: very late cut

If the keepers are worried then they should bleeding well wear a helmet. If not then shut-up.

Re: very late cut

i dont have a problem with batsmen trying to hit the ball late! i stay down as late as possible and rise with the ball! and i always wear a Lid Keeping and standing up!
