Jessica you should also read the Ruth Park books about a family living in the slums of an inner city Sydney suburb immediately after WW2.

Reminds me of the Aussie book and mini series THE BATTLERS. About a young separated man forced during the depression to head into the bush to find menial work, where he meets a destitute young women. What follows is the the pairs often harrowing, yet uplifting struggle to find sufficient work to feed themselves..

I doubt this is in an English library, but you may find the Ruth Park book series. Look for Harp in the South and Poor Mans Orange. If you cant find the books they were made into a mini series which can be found online. You may also be able to buy then on DVD. Believe me they are worth the effort.
