(taking bait) Ok but I'm not exactly sure where.Australia have classier players playing in much better leagues worldwide, made the round of 16 at the world cup in arguably a tougher group where as the US never won a match and only garnished 1 point after an own goal against Italy, and in the two meetings the countries have had have a 1 loss 1 draw record. The US play very well as a team, but that is mainly because they play a ridiculous amount of friendlies and have a lot of their squad home based where as the entire Australian squad is based in Europe.Personally, I think pound for pound Australia's players are at another level to the US.They gave a good showing in 2002, but that was from a dream group and even then they only scraped through out of it.I watched them in the match against the Czech Republic and I think they were exposed in a lot of areas midfield and defence related, and they were areas where Australia weren't exposed to the same degree against better opposition. If the two countries were to play each other on an even playing field, and with full fit squads, my money would be on Australia winning quite comfortably at the moment.

Re: NFL got grand plans. ICC got head up a**

new thread created here to discuss the merits of who is better.

Langarne,

how many aussies are in the premiership? Viduka, Kewell, Cahill, Schwartzer, anyone else? i believe USA has 10- DeMeritt, Beasley, Reyna, Bocanegra, Convey, Hannahman, Friedel, Keller, Rossi, MCBride. and thats just off the top of my head. also, not they are all (but Rossi who can't make up his mind) were on the national team at one point.

there's much more to state, but i'll pause for now....

Screw you. BigJeff understands cricket, and so do I.

Re: Who's Better in Soccer/Football USA or Australia?

Sure you understand the game, as much as your nation understands gun control.

Re: Who's Better in Soccer/Football USA or Australia?

bogan, cut the crap and stay on topic. you are new- you have 15 posts here, please think before posting, especially when its flaming and baiting one's nationality. that stuff is not welcome here.

this thread is for discussion on comparing USA and Aussie soccer/football. if you wish to discuss me selling this site to starbucks, walmart, maccas, etc. or the limits and valuable points of current US gun laws, and its results, go to the politics section of zumper.

anything off topic will be edited/deleted and it will result in a warning and/or a possible timeout.

Valuable points of gun laws ha funny one.

Any way on topic, who finished better in the last world cup. Thread closed

[taking even more bait] when was Australia last in the WC before this one? and how many WC have the US been since then?

let me make a point clear, my two fav teams are USA and australia. that being said, i think usa are better than them. i'd love for the two to play each other again.

oh, another topic to discuss within soccer- which domestic comp is better: A-League or MLS?

I'm thinking you missed Spector, Gibbs, and Howard.
Keller is in Germany.
Not sure about Johann Smith for Bolton. He was born in the US at least.

And hopefully Onyewu and Dempsey will be added to the premiership list in January.

Birmingham doesn't count. Wrong league.
Is Elrich on loan or out injured? He hasn't played for them in ages, has he?
Filan is with Doncaster these days I think.

Okay, here's a pretty decent list of Americans in Europe, only counting teams in the top flight (so I'm not counting leagues like the Coca-Cola Championship or the French Ligue 2.)

ERIVIDISE (HOLLAND)

Bradley - Heerenveen
Lee Nguyen - PSV Eindhoven

BUNDESLIGA (Germany)

Conor Casey - FSV Mainz
Cherundolo - Hanover 96
Feilhaber - Hamburg SV
Keller - Borussia Moenchengladbach

FRANCE

Westberg - Troyes

BELGIUM

Onyewu - Standard Liege

NORWAY

Borchers - Odd Grenland
Adin Brown - Aalesund
Ramiro Corrales - Ham-Kam
Waltrip - Sandefjord
West - Fredrikstad

DENMARK

Califf - Aalborg
Fearrington - FC Copenhagen
Pearce - Nordsjælland
Russell - Viborg
Zewe - Viborg

SWEDEN

Countess - Osters

One thing to keep in mind when looking at lists like this is that the American MLS is in general stronger than the Australian A-League. I think something like 11 MLS players made our national team this year.

Re: Who's Better in Soccer/Football USA or Australia?

Okay, digging a bit further, I see that Smith is definitely American, and Elrich got injured 2 months ago while playing for Australia. Filan is definitely with Doncaster.

So here's the EPL list:

Australia

Schwarzer - Middlesbrough
Viduka - Middlesbrough
Kewell - Liverpool
Cahill - Everton
Neill - Blackburn
Emerton - Blackburn
Skoko - Wigan
Elrich - Fulham
Moore - Newcastle

USA

DeMeritt - Watford
Beasley - Man City
Reyna - Man City
Bocanegra - Fulham
McBride - Fulham
Convey - Reading
Hahnemann - Reading
Friedel - Blackburn
Rossi - Newcastle
Spector - West Ham
Howard - Everton
Smith - Bolton
Gibbs - Charlton

There'd probably be a lot more Americans in the EPL if it wasn't so difficult for many of them to qualify for a work permit. I'm sure we'll see a few more next year, from the likes of Onyewu, Dempsey, Johnson, Adu, Twellman, Ching, etc.

We you would hope with the fact you have 9 times more people then us that your local comp would be better.

You can only look at the last world cup, we did better.

Also the usa for a long time has had the easyest group to get into the world cup, why is this so? Because fifa wants to make sure that the USA market is in on the world cup to bring in more money.

Yeah but hang on, lets put things into perspective. All of the Australian players I mentioned bar Elrich and Skoko are first team players.I've never heard of some of the guys you're talking about and if they're youngsters, there are a plethora of youngsters from Australia scattered throughout Europe, David Williams for example who I completely forgot about at Bronby in Denmark but is being chased by ManU and will be a core part of Australia's strike force come 2010.Could add Cameron Watson, Matthew Spiranovic, Rostyn Griffiths and Kristian Sarkies to that list also.

Secondly, "gonna be" doesn't count.Dempsey has a try out at athletico as does Onyewu in the premiership, but you're comparing that to youngsters who are already there or in the least in youth teams. Also, the only reason Beasley is there is because he couldn't get a start at PSV, and neither can Nguyen, but Culina does.WRT the work permit issue, that doesn't really wash either. If these guys weren't up to scratch they wouldn't be given contracts, and we have players playing as starters in Serie A, La Liga, France and Switzerland (FC Basel who just recently played off for UEFA).I like the US team because they are what they're supposed to be, a team. But to say they are better than Australia is just poppycock. The difference in talent, and even prospective talent is quite a way at the present time.

-EDIT- If you want to see some up and coming Aussie in England, keep a keen eye on James Wesolowski. Was born to play football.

Well as I said, Dempsey and Onyewu are trying out, but I like the look of Clint Dempsey, has a bit of x factor about him.You can forget about Ching and Twellman, and Freddy Adu needs to work out who he wants to play for.Eddie Johnson has some tools but he's not there physically or mentally as a striker just yet.Certainly not to be garnishing overseas interest.I'm with BigJeff.I'd love them to play each other, but it would have to be in Europe so we could have our full squad available. If that was the case I'd predict 3-1 Australia.

Re: Who's Better in Soccer/Football USA or Australia?

Ching and Twellman are good players. I think Ching should have been in our World Cup squad.

Re: Who's Better in Soccer/Football USA or Australia?

Firstly great thread BJ.

To answer the question I would have to say Australia. America are just too cocky and usually fail to win anything.
