Will ODIs survive the onslaught ?

Will ODIs survive the onslaught ?

With the shorter version of the game taking over ,I wonder what is in store for the one day internationals.Does anyone think that the ODIs will slowly be replaced by the more popular 20-20 ? Why would organisers and sponsors want half full stadium for an ODI when they can have a full house and party-style crowd with the newer format. In future ,will we have a 20-20 worldcup every year and a ODI worldcup every 4 years ? By the way, why can't we have the dancers in the ODIs too ? :D

Re: Will ODIs survive the onslaught ?

It hasn't been replaced yet, but already people are saying that 50 overs is dead and that 20/20 will replace it.

God I hope not, I would love if they kept it Cricket (no dancers and music) and kept 20/20's for novelties for the start of tours.

Don't even suggest a 20/20 WC every year!

Re: Will ODIs survive the onslaught ?

I think they'll survive as long as some common sense is used. A 3 match series is fine for ODIs with a twenty20 match proceeding. No need to mess around too much!

Of course Cricket fans wouldn't like ODI's to be replaced by T20's but organizers and sponsors might think differently. I believe that T20's should be used in countries where Cricket isn't popular rather than replacing the existing formats in the countries where cricket is already popular.

Re: Will ODIs survive the onslaught ?

I think that's a great suggestion! 20-20 could be used to rope in newer teams into cricket. As proven in the T20 worldcup,it's easier for the underdogs to turn the tables in this format.I'd have never believed that Zimbabwe could defeat Australia  and that wasn't the only one.Bangladesh won against the West Indies and Scotland wasn't bad against Pakistan either.Hopefully,ODIs will continue to rule. But I'd wholeheartedly welcome the dance and music to the ODIs.

Re: Will ODIs survive the onslaught ?

ODIs is the contest and twenty20 is the show.

3 ODIs and 1 twenty20 should be a must in every series. Three ODIs prevents overkill and unless one match is rained off or abandoned, there will be a winner and at minimum cost. 1 twenty20 per series keeps the game fresh and this is essential to keep the crowds piling in.

The idea about minnows getting one shot at big guns in twenty20 is a great one, Uganda will have no chance whatsoever against Australia in an ODI but in twenty20, one brilliant cameo can create an upset.

Well said, I would agree.

I wouldn't want T20 to take over, but they are really entertaining...I just don't think they would be if the majority of matches I saw were T20.

From test cricket to T20 is too big a contrast, so I reckon that they'll keep ODI's as these are sort of intermediaries.

Fantastic idea. Or have it at the front of an ODI series, just to ease into a series.

Re: Will ODIs survive the onslaught ?

Well I am sure ODIs will survive against this shorter version of Cricket " twenty20 ". Same question came in past when ODI introduced but since than it makes Test matches more better and we get good results from Test matches. It will effect on ODI and Test matches but all 3 formats will survive for long time.

I like this idea very much. Though I would have to say the Twenty20 would have to be before the ODI series. Though that is just my opinion, others might think differently.

I also agree with the 3 ODI's thing that you have said. Australia are playing India in 7 ODI's shortly after the Twenty20 World Cup. Surely they could've of made it like 3 ODI's and 3 Tests. 7 ODI's will easily get boring after a while.
