Wrist Spin Bowling (part Five)

I had a look on Youtube - didn't feature in the highlight packages and the resolution was rubbish.

Yeah, I found it on foxtel. Looks like a delivery worth experimenting with? What is your experience with the delivery?
When I try bowling the backspinner I can only really get it about 20% backspin and 80% sidespin.

Same here, it's basically my slider and I bowl it with a scrambled seam.

Just that - it's probably the most difficult delivery to bowl, on par with the top-spinning flipper. I reckon there's people out there that naturally have the fine motor skills that enable them to do it relatively easy. My son who's a fast bowler, but was brought up on Wrist-spin can bowl it easily. If I try bowling it, I tend to bowl a big Leg-break which is okay, because of the lack of fine motor skills, the ball sometimes comes out of the hand and skids on like an Orthodox back-spinner, but in essence its a Big Leg-break gone wrong which is what most of Warne's alleged 'Sliders' were. Warne himself was happy for people to call them 'Sliders' he knew that they were just messed up Leg-Breaks. He realised that if he just let them (Commentators) call these messed up Leg Breaks "Sliders" he could go with it and just pretend that was yet another variation. So he just carried on with his 4 basic deliveries and let them believe that the messed up Leg-breaks were this thing called a 'Slider'. He never bowled an intentional slider ever as far as I can make out whatever they are. One of his coaches (Not Jenner) describes a ball he bowled in training where he just let the ball go with no flick or action on it - a kind of nothing ball, no fingers down the back - nothing, but I've never seen it bowled in a game or heard of it being bowled in a game and I'm not sure if it has ever been recorded in any books. I've noted in the UK since Warne retired pundits and commentators rarely if at all describe any ball as a Slider, kind of under-lining that fact it doesn't actually exist.

You're probably aware I'm really interested in the idea of a 'Slider'. Do you bowl this delivery you call a Slider with pure back-spin and rip the ball inwards towards yourself, but with a scrambled seam? If so - surely that's an Orthodox back-spinner? If it's not can you explain why it's not? Sorry to be so pedantic.

Not pedantic at all mate. When I'm practicing it hand to hand I think I squeeze it out like how Ritchie Benaud described the apple thing on the train. When I do it hand to hand it has 45 degrees mix of back spin and side spin, maybe more if I go around the loop a bit more. But when I go overarm I lose a bit of that back spin, so it comes out more how leggy described it with most side spin and some back spin. This causes it to turn a little bit with an upright seam, so I scramble mine to try and lose this effect and make it go straight on and it seems to work.

Huh, that's pretty interesting actually. I've got a faster variation where I go more roundarm and the ball naturally comes through faster with more sidespin, and I call this my slider as it can either go on straight or turn big. Got heaps of lbw's with this 'slider'.

On another note, first game 16th of October. Looking forward to it, there should be a bit of rough on the pitch from a first grade game the day before. The format is basically 50 overs per side, so I'll be able to bowl 10 overs with luck.

Sounds like a big leg break - the crux of it is when you're bowling it you're trying to bowl a big leg break yeah?

Well, I won a trophy for my effort. It's nice to have something tangible for those hours in the nets. It has given me a thirst for more, I'll play for the second team next season. But if I don't win more I'll still be happy with this.

Over the winter I am working on three things: (1) a quicker ball, so I can stop the better players from scoring freely. I have bowled it in the nets, it's a quicker and flatter stock ball; (2) mixing up top spin and side spin. My stock ball turns okay, I'm developing a ball with less turn/more bounce and (3) line and length of the flipper. Some net sessions I will bowl only the flipper.

Nice one, never won anything like this other than my 10th Wicket stand for 100 runs to win a game. My mate at the other end scored 100 runs and I blocked for an awful lot of deliveries! Well done mate!

Leggy88 Leggy88 did you play today? I've been meaning to ask you. How many overs are your games. I watched one of those vids I saw you in and then watched some others and then went to their website and from what I could make out it looked like their games U16's were played across 2days? The format seemed to be Sat - 30 overs each and then Sunday back again to play another 30 overs each - all the same game? Is that right - no wonder you Aussies are good if you play games that long!

Well done on the trophy. That's a good plan for the offseason, how regularly do you reckon you can get to the nets? You'll return an even better player with that plan.

Nah, I played today, and in this format it is basically a one dayer - 50 overs a side over one day.

Opened the batting, had a decent 50 partnership with the other opener - only scored 10 myself though, then I got out to this spinner that bowled a really quick bouncer. Then when we came out to bowl, I would bowl like 2 bad, leg side short ones an over, and in this comp they get punished. So, not the best returns, 0-57 off 8. I didn't think I bowled that bad, as there were 4 missed chances - one dropped caught and bowled, one dropped by the keeper, and one dropped by cover, as well as an lbw call that was absolutely plumb but given not out. I also kept their best batter in all sorts until I'd drop one short at the end of the over and he'd hit it for six. He plays for NSW (he was the one with the lbw call).

Good news is I've got a t20 game tomorrow to redeem myself.

I can get to the nets during the day when the weather is good on the days I'm not walking. I'll also try to keep my fitness up by going on long walks etc.

Good luck in your T20.
