Wrist Spin Bowling (part Five)

Anyone out there know anyone who plays international level who bowls Flippers. Not commentator Flippers, where the clueless F***s saying "he's got him with the Flipper" just cos it skids in low, but bowlers who openly say they bowl it as part of their armoury - I'm primarily looking for female bowlers if I'm honest. I know Ish Sohdi says he bowls them, but I'd love to hear about women bowlers. Also coaches, anyone know any international coaches that try and get the spinners to have it as one of their balls, or am I now asking for too much - given how few people bowl em?

I haven't seen the classic flipper for a good while - a lot of mislabelled backspinners, but not a lot of thumb action. Is it possible that other backspinners have edged out the flipper a bit? I think they are a bit easier to bowl and disguise, and while not offering quite the same zip as Warne and Hogg used to get from the classic flipper, they're straight and flat enough to provide decent contrast to the stock legspinner

I watch a fair bit of women’s cricket but about 95% sure I’ve never seen a flipper. Sobhana Asha bowls a front of the hand seam up in the WPL, but that’s about it.

Yeah you're right, can't say that I've heard anyone on commentary saying Benuad style "He's got him with the Flipper". What variation are you referring to - just the out of the front of the hand straight ball that doesn't spin or rolling the fingers down the back as a seam bowler does? I know Adil Rashid has one that goes straight on, but the commentators are clueless as to what he's done. I guess we should be thankful for the fact that they know longer refer to it as a "Slider" at least, but it would be interesting to know what he does, I wouldn't be surprised if it was an attempt at the Orthodox back-spinner or a Big-Leg-break, knowing full well that they skid on when they go wrong? Baffles me that so few people use it.

Fantastic series with Pakistan, so much spin! Peter Philpott would have approved. Great seeing England being thrashed by spin - utterly clueless. Back to the drawing board with Bazball? Looks like the next test with NZ might be a challenge with Santner taking so many wickets, it be hilarious if England turn up to every game and find patio heaters and giant fans on every wicket with the bowling attack re-enforced with un-known bowlers with no data about them. I'd love it! Spin to win!!!!

In other news... For years I've been aware that my club has had a select few playing indoors cricket. I've over-heard whispered conversations about it and it's never been spoken about openly and it's seemed that there was a small group of established players that kept it among themselves and it was a closed shop. But then this year it was offered to the whole club. Needless to say I jumped at it along with 35 others with only 6 players being required. I've no idea how people regard me at my club despite having been there now for 15 years or so. I have totally different political opinion to the majority of them and that gets under a lot of their skins. I also have no time for football (Soccer) and they're all obsessed by it. But, there are people I like needless to say that either put up with me or they may actually like me, but not being a drinker and being considerably older than a lot of them I kind of sit outside of the main social groups. So with 35 people making themselves available I thought the 'Old boys' network might kick in and I'd not get a look in. But its not worked out like that. I've played in both games with most of the players being 17 year olds. The last game was me plus 5 x 17 year olds! This indoor format is new to us and at the moment one of our lads is the leading batter and I'm the leading wicket taker! 4 wickets so far off 6 overs, strike rate of 9.Two of them Leg-Breaks bowled around the back of the legs. Both times the players stood there incredulous in utter disbelief. I'm like... "Champ - your bowled... round the back of the legs mate, have you never seen a Leg-Break"? Love it!

I should probably try to use more precise terminology - as you note, slider seems to be used for any straight flat ball from a wristspinner. I suppose the term can be useful for a non-thumb-generated backspinner?

I might try to collect some examples - often tricky as a lot of highlights packages don't show the release in the spinvision angle (always seem to have five minutes to show batsmen celebrating centuries though, batriarchy)

Yasir Shah - I'm 100% sure I've seen him bowl a "seamer" delivery with the seam between middle and ring fingers, pointing straight down the pitch & pulling the fingers down the back of the ball, but I can't find it on youtube now, very annoying. He also bowls what looks like an orthodox backspinner to me - two-up, two-down grip , backspin and legspin on the ball , slightly hidden by the scrambled seam:

Warne - You yourself have posted this C4 Analyst clip showing Warnie bowling an orthodox backspinner, labelled a slider;

Adil Rashid-

Rashid bowls an orthodox backspinner - he bowls quite a lot of square legspinners , so with his action it's probably not that hard to bowl - he has very flexible wrists! The seam comes out almost straight, but it's an orthodox backspinner:

Another good example at 02:46 here;

- the ECB highlights on youtube don't show the release properly.

Good closeup from the front here, showing how he's able to produce something close to a standard backspinning seamer's delivery from a legspin grip:

Kuldeep Yadav - Kuldeep does allegedly bowl a "slider" of some description, but despite watching him whenever I can, I can't recall ever seeing one. Still hunting for a video example, I'll have a trawl around for Rashid Khan while I'm at it.

Good research, I've just written a fun reply to this - it's taken me hours actually, but it's thrown up an unanswered question. We all know (Hopefully) that Warne's 'Sliders' were actually Big Leg-Breaks that just came out wrong and didn't turn. But, is there any evidence - maybe during his work with the Rajastan Royals that he bowled this 2 fingers down the back of the ball back-spinner?

I didn't know that 😀 Has he mentioned this in one of his many masterclasses?

Maybe I have unrealistic expectations, but this just seems such a weird vibe to me, so clique-ish and unwelcoming - if numbers were limited, why not just say so? English cricket definitely leans one way politically and I suspect we're both on the minority side; that said there's quite a few like-minded lads in my club, and I just avoid the subject with those who think differently, but of course it's a point of difference. Booze culture is a difficult one, and not one I think my club handles all that well - we're a small club and there's not all that many social events, but they are almost always alcohol based , so as hard as we try to be inclusive (and we have a lot more asian players than almost all our opponents), there's a divide between the ones who are happy to sit in the pub all evening chatting shit, and the one's who aren't, even if they aren't drinking. I'm a bit too new to be making a fuss (only been playing a couple of years) but I'd like to see us do a bit more to include the lads that we only really see at gametime. How do your indoor games work, is it hard ball/22 overs, or something else?
