Your pets

Your pets

This is where you can tell me what sort of pets you might own.

My family have got a jack russell named tigger.
My brother and sister in law have got 2 dogs, rexy and izzy, a rabbit and a guinea pig named whitey and squeak, and have got plenty of fish.
The dogs are really playful. The were both going for my slippers.

Tigger looks a little odd for a Jack Russell - is it a pure breed or cross breed?

This is my 'idea' of a JR:

He is a pure breed. Oh and he isn't a wirehaired JR.
He is just a short haired JR. He is 13 years old.

Rexy and Izzy are Cocker Spaniel x King Charles Cavilear Spaniel.
Rexy looks more like a cocker spaniel.
Both are 6 months old.

Re: Your pets

It might be that his ears are sticking up, kind of changes the look of that breed.

Also, my mutt is a JR/Beagle cross so that has sort of changed my perception of how JR's should look.

He's cute.
Our dog loves to play fetch the whole time.

Re: Your pets

My brother and sister in law and their family are going away so I have been asked to house sit and animal sit their pets.

The two dogs that are laying on the couch are the ones that I am looking after plus they have got a rabbit and a guinea pig and a plethora of fish.

Two Dogs, Boxers. One is 15 years old the other is just a and is already pretty tall. Jimmy(The Puppy), and Jarro (The Old one).

How do you post photos on here, it only asks for a Http:// address, mine are saved files on my computer.

You have to upload them to a site like photobucket or image shack and then the site will give you a link. Post them using the
tags.

Re: Your pets

I have a small fat cat with grey fur and white socks and belly. Have been looking for a dog, would like one from the pound that needs an owner and a good home.

Get yourself a jack russell. Your cat will love it. Just get the opposite sex to your cat. Also get a puppy just so that you don't have on going problems that the dog had

Getting a dog from the pound needs a bit of research. A good pound should advise you and try to match a dog that suits your needs but some are better than others at doing this.

The main problem with rescue dogs is that often you don't know their full history and they can have problems that only become evident once you get them home. This can be true of puppies just as much as of mature dogs.

I would suggest having a clear idea of what type of dog you're looking at before you go. Ask yourself things like how much time will the dog be left on it's own, what type of exercise are you able to give it, is it cat friendly, housing situation (yard, apartment) and so on.

Currently, I have a Jack Russell/Beagle cross who was a rescue. She took a bit of work in order to bring up her confidence (she was even scared of puddles and grass when we first had her) but it was well worth it. Both breeds are loyal and very playful but they do have a stubborn streak and then some. In terms of exercise they tend to enjoy one or two very long walks (about 90 mins per day with plenty of running) as they then crash out for the rest of the day (well that's the Beagle in her, built for the chase and not much more).

A good option might be a greyhound (which is the breed I'll be getting next), as contrary to popular belief they need relatively little exercise and mostly enjoy curling up in their bed in the same room as you. A 30 minute run around a wide open space is more than enough. They are also pretty docile and not prone to barking.

The main concern with this breed is the chase instinct and with you having a cat in the house, any greyhound that had been trained for racing would be a no. They also have very thin skin which needs to be looked after, especially around the neck area (which is why you often see them with the wide leather collars).

I would have a look at this site as a starting point, as it has some good information on each breed, including the important stuff like temperament, exercise needs and likely illnesses. Once you've found a few you like, have a look for specialist sites on that breed as they'll give you the complete low-down.

Re: Your pets

My old Albino Boxer who was Deaf, he wasn't a rescue dog but we got him off this guy, who's room mate used to hit him. The reason he gave him away is that his original dog used to fight the Boxer.

When we first got him our original dog Jarro(The one I still have now) fought with him once then they were best friends.

The problem is, that even though this dog was very placid, because he had been hit, he didn't trust humans and wouldn't even let us pat him on the head until about 5 or 6 years after we got him (we got him when he was two).

Also some people, mainly bigger, taller men, he would growl at and cower in fear of them. As MC said, pound dogs require a lot of research. If you're perpared to do this then you should find the dog you get very enjoyable:)
