Your Up & Comers

i find it hard to follow all australian domestic sides and as such only go in depth into the greatest one... the queensland side. as a result i have a hard time following some new players suggested by people.

what are up and comers you think should or will be in or around the australian side?

they dont have to be young and, for example, like brad hodge who played but has missed his chance.

reasons would be nice.

Re: Your Up & Comers

from my queensland perspective (and although he is no longer playing for queensland) i think nofke is the big one. he is a great player and there is another thread on him.

also hopes. i think he would be very handy in tests. he is very good at ODIs, and at domestic level he plays unlimited overs better then he does limited ones. and hes in the ODI side. is a little contradictory.

they are hardly newbies but i think they should be playing.

chris simpson is coming up in the world too. hes a good captain, could be looking at a graeme smith style shock international captain.

Re: Your Up & Comers

I like the look of Clint McKay for Victoria. He did really well for Australia A against Pakistan A - taking a 6fa, and he averaged under 15 with the ball in the FR cup this year.

fair enough... brought it on myself.

wish dizzy was.

just wait until i've had some time to think and i will actually look around for some young guys.

Re: Your Up & Comers

Ive got a couple of names.

Clint Mckay is certainly an up and comer. look out for his brother in say a decade too. NSW are starting to play some kids too.. Hazelwood looks good, as does Steve Smith, the leggie.

George Bailey? getting on a bit, but may come good. needs to be a bit more consistant. Would've have said the Pom, if not for the recent events. Voges has hit his peak at 29, might be a chance if a spot open up.

just some random thoughts i had.

Turned 26 earlier this year

As for other Victorians, Jon Holland is another who experts seem to think will be a great spinner, left arm spinner who has played a couple of games here and there but sits behind McGain, might get some more exposure this year after his suprise call up to Australia A and has only just turned 22

Matthew Wade also has some big wraps at 21, finally started making some consistent runs last season, was the worst keeper in Victoria, but probably an improvement on Haddins keeping skills :p

Re: Your Up & Comers

Sam Robson I've been following for about a year and a half. Used to play for NSW Second XI, represented Australia at under-19s, but couldn't break into the first XI. Just turned 20, competent opening or middle-order bat, and a promising legspinner (although it looks like he's giving the bowling away to focus on his batting).

Got a contract with Middlesex for this season, and recently made his debut... the other day he scored a century against Essex at Lord's. He's recently applied for UK citizenship though, so we may have lost him for good.

good to see you following a youngster not even up to first class level yet.

just for a joke i would like to tip myself as an up and comer after bowling out three queensland lower XI players on the weekend in a warm up match... yay me. not happening though :p

ben laughlin is looking very promising for queensland. he is a fit fast bowler that has been help win matches while nofke has been injured. he is part of the reason queensland did a stupid thing and not contract nofke properly and sent him to WA. he is a touch old and in and out of the team, but only because of bowler like kaspa, bichel, nofke and johnson pushing him aside. has been troubled by bad form but has come good and got 3 victoria wickets to be the man of the match in the FR final last season. he had better stats then siddle (just to bring him in here :p) so he should then be playing for australia in about two months going by that. may be a possibility of the ODI side if he has a spectacular season this one coming, and gaps open up. until then he is probably queenslands best bowler.

Re: Your Up & Comers

Long term Luke Towers is a real batting prospect; batting all-rounder Justin Coetzee has had a couple of good seasons at Grade level.

more short term i think this will be Theo Doropolous' big year.

Will represent Australia in either 20/20 or ODI'S, not sure about test level though.

I know Clint very well and he is progressing nicely, but which brother are you talking about? Dave is at Essendon and will probably play 2's. Maybe fill in the 1's on occasions. He is hitting 30. There is also Scott who is currently playing at my club. Big lazy ************** but can play. Will never advance. Havent heard of any other brothers?

Good player.

if Australia is serious about having that all-rounder then Theo deserves a big look- perhaps even a go in a dead rubber. i've been watching him on and off since he played state under-15's; from memory he was the captain of that side- the first to win that particular tournament for us- and finished player of the tournament. and he is just getting better and better every year- a bit of a Tom Moody or early Steve Waugh- more like Chris Harris from NZ really but people don't seem to know who he is. not a truly natural player but tons of grit to get into the nets and just work and work until he gets it right, by all reports.
