1st Test: Australia Vs India in Melbourne

Re: 1st Test: Australia Vs India in Melbourne

Rare failure for Ponting, bowled by Zaheer Khan for just four.

2/162, Hayden is 87 not out, Mike Hussey is the new batsman.

EDIT: Hussey out for two. 3/165.

Hayden still looking good despite being injured

Re: 1st Test: Australia Vs India in Melbourne

Australia finishes the day at 9/337.

Kumble has 5 wickets for the Indians.

Hayden finished with 124, Johnson is on 10 and Clark is on 21.

Honors even after day 1 with the resistance Clark and Johnson have put up for the last wicket.

Re: 1st Test: Australia Vs India in Melbourne

At the end of the first day, Australia are 9/337. Matt Hayden was out for 124 with Andrew Symonds making 35. The others failed to have an influence as an array of rash shots and perhaps an underestimation of the Indian side has lead to their undoing.

Stuart Clark lead a mini fightback at the end there finishing on 21 not out from only 16 balls.

Kumble lead from the front with his bowling despite some bizarre captaincy decisions taking 5/84, Zaheer Khan was the only other multiple wicket-taker with 3/93.

Hard to tell who is on top after day one, Australia definitely let go a good chance to assert their ascendancy there going from 0/135 to 9/337. India fought back well after looking out of the game there early on.

This pitch is a slow one so the spinners will come more into play as the test goes on. The Indian batters will be under pressure to do well and not let their bowlers' work go without reward.

Re: 1st Test: Australia Vs India in Melbourne

You'd say the odds were split pretty evenly. Australia r expected to make at least 300 every time they bat so you'd say they r on par. India have done very well to take 9 wickets, something the Lankans failed to do even thought the SL attack was probably better. An early wicket backed up by a solid opening partnership should give this test match what it deserves, although i wouldn't put it past one B. Lee to ruin that idea. NB: Saw Rahul Dravid no less than 20 mins after stumps fully padded up and in the nets having a hit, this at least show the corect mentality in that the Indians are here to win. Looking forward to the next four day :D

Aw Crap!! The internet went down last night at about 10pm and didn't come back till now. I had rested all day to be able to follow the first match online and follow the chat here and the freaking net goes down. Thanks all the same, the comments are appreciated by those on the other siode of the globe!!

Hope you're enjoying the game DJQ. @|

Australia were all out for 343, Clark was the man out and didn't add to his overnight score. Zaheer Khan finish with four wickets.

In reply, India are 3/63. Wasim Jaffer fell early and then Dravid was out in the last over before lunch for an incredibly slow five off 66 balls. And now VVS Laxman was out a short time ago for 26, falling to Brett Lee who also got Jaffer. Clark got the wicket of Dravid.

Tendulkar is 23 not out with Ganguly on 6, they'll have to do a lot of work in order for India to get near Australia's first innings total.

just got this up on sopcast. love it!

bit unlucky for Yuvraj with that last decision - i didn't think he hit it but every umpire's done that before. He got a lucky decision last over - the old Karma :p

oh well

interesting stage of the game

Tendulkar batted very well, Dravid too slow, Laxman played far too hesitantly

Re: 1st Test: Australia Vs India in Melbourne

HOGGY!!!!

just missed the wicket due to a toilet break, but Hoggy you legend!

166/7

Kumble 22

Re: 1st Test: Australia Vs India in Melbourne

it happens, we all make decisions like that only to look at it in our minds 2 seconds later and wonder what on earth we were thinking

173/8 now

hoggy takes another wicket with a wrong'un. Harbhajan trying to belt the ball out of the ground.

Kumble still on 22

Re: 1st Test: Australia Vs India in Melbourne

India all out for 196. Kumble got a shocker from Bowden, gave it not out originally but then went over to Mark Benson to see if the ball carried. After it was established that the ball carried, Billy gave a little nod to Kumble who was then on his way but obviously not happy.

Zaheer Khan got a regulation edge to Gilchrist off Brett Lee. Lee finished with four wickets yet again, that's the fifth innings in a row he has done that. Stuart Clark picked up four wickets and Brad Hogg took two.

A lead of 147 for Australia and there are 12 overs to be bowled in this little mini session. India will be looking for a couple of wickets here.

Couple of little milestones here too. Kumble's wicket was Brett Lee's 250th in tests and Gilchrist catch courtesy of Zaheer Khan was his 395th dismissal which equals the Australian record set by Ian Healy.

Gee Anand Vasu from the cricinfo commentary team isn't too happy. Must be taken out his frustration on the commentary text. ;)

Anand Vasu from cricinfo.com said:
6.4 Khan to Jaques, FOUR, Another excellent delivery ... Not. Short and wide, even if it is almost the end of the day Jaques is not going to miss out. He carves this wide of the man at gully and picks up four more

Only eight overs bowled in that session and it was a bad one for India. Zaheer Khan and RP Singh bowled poorly, too short and too much width from Zaheer while RP Singh bowled too full, especially to Matt Hayden who cashed in.

Australia are 0/32 at the close of play, a lead of 179 runs. They'll be on the hunt for plenty of runs tomorrow and we might see a declaration late on Day 3 or early on Day 4. Australia will be looking for a lead of about 450, maybe even 500 if they get that far just to put the game way out of India's reach.

Re: 1st Test: Australia Vs India in Melbourne

Australia in the box seat here, pile on the runs all day tomorrow and hopefully send the Indians in late tomorrow to front the music will be ideal @|

it was great to see some live cricket! last time I got to see a Test match was the Ashes a year ago. got the match up again right now. i wish I had discovered Sopcast earlier!

Re: 1st Test: Australia Vs India in Melbourne

Australia are 4/190, a lead of 337 runs. Hayden was out in the morning session for 47 with Ponting failing again, making only three. Jaques was out after lunch hitting a return catch to Kumble and Mike Hussey couldn't resist temptation and edged to Tendulkar at first slip off RP Singh.

And then a short time ago, Andrew Symonds was bowled off a no-ball with Zaheer Khan overstepping.

Haha, glad you're enjoying the game. Does this sopcast cost anything and how much usage does your computer use?

Re: 1st Test: Australia Vs India in Melbourne

At the tea break now, Australia are 5/248, a lead of 395. Michael Clarke has moved to 52 with Gilchrist on one. Andrew Symonds was out a short time ago for 44, LBW to Zaheer Khan.

India needs to work on a couple of things with their game which I have noticed just through watching the game. The first is their fielding, on occasions it has been nothing short of terrible. Today alone, there have been quite a few misfields which have cost them runs and in the first innings too, there were also numerous fielding errors. It's the little things they need to work on, cutting off ones and stopping those boundaries. Too many times, a fielder has been too lazy to get right down to the ball and has resulted in a half-hearted, one handed attempt which has gone past them and resulted in them giving away runs, sometimes even a boundary. It's something that India don't want to be renowned for.

Another area is the amount of no-balls they have bowled, particularly from Zaheer Khan. India bowled 9 no-balls in the first innings, eight were by Zaheer. And in Australia's second innings so far, 11 have been bowled and all of those no-balls are courtesy of Zaheer. That's 19 no-balls out of a total of 20. This overstepping has cost them a wicket and numerous appeals for LBW, some of which could have been quite close calls. This could prove to be rather costly when the tri-series comes around as front no-balls means the facing batter on the next ball gets a free hit. Australia had the same problem in 2005 with Brett Lee and Jason Gillespie constantly overstepping, since then the problem was fixed and the amount of no-balls has decreased.

Just some of the things I have noticed. An uphill battle here for India, trailing by 395 with the explosive Gilchrist at the crease and Clarke batting well. They'll need quick wickets to reduce this lead. Australia meanwhile might be aiming for a lead of 500. If there two can bat quick enough we may see a declaration late today. Otherwise it should be tomorrow morning.
