3rd Test: England vs India at The Oval

We head into this final test with India 1-0 up and having the series lead despite being outplayed in the first test. The weather proved England's biggest problem in the first game and it beat them in the end.

The second test was a total turnaround to the first as it was India who dominated proceedings. They beat the weather this time and managed to win the match, giving them a series lead which didn't look at all possible after the first game.

England go into the match needing to win to tie the series at one game each. They've named their eleven early and will be determined to win the game after naming an unchanged line-up. India will probably go in with an unchanged line-up also, no real reason to make changes to the side that thrashed England in the second test.

Both captains played very well last time at this ground. Dravis smacked 217 and Vaughan 195 in the high scoring contest. Expect a result here too, only three of the last 16 games have been draws with two of those draws due to the impeding rain which we have seen a lot of in this English "summer".

India will be keen to win the series, they have a habit of relinquishing the lead in series, the most recent one was against South Africa.

Expect a good match here, England will be set on trying to level the series while India will want to get the monkey off their back and get an away series win. Sparks will fly.

Re: 3rd Test: England vs India at The Oval

Solid start for India - 1 for 151, Jaffer out for 35.

Re: 3rd Test: England vs India at The Oval

Day ended at 316 for 4. Not bad for India. Karthik got 91. Tendulkar and Laxman are not out.

Re: 3rd Test: England vs India at The Oval

i think England are going to be losing this one. India will post a huge 1st day total and England will chase it meekly, while losing wickets along the way.

I think you mean "huge 1st innings total". While they did post a reasonable 1st day total, I wouldn't necessarily call it huge. Anything is possible, still. Day 2 gets underway in few more minutes.

yes, that is what i meant! :)

Re: 3rd Test: England vs India at The Oval

Pietersen strikes in his first over after being hit for consecutive sixes. Dhoni is gone for 92 trying to get the hat-trick of sixes which puts India in command at 7/508.

Re: 3rd Test: England vs India at The Oval

if none of the remaining Indian batsmen get a century, then India will have set the record for highest innings without a player scoring a century. the old record was India's 524 for 9 declared against South Africa in 2003.

the question was asked on Stump Beaders #152 at bbc.com regarding India's 481 in the 2nd Test. that was the 7th highest score without a 100 for a batsmen.

Re: 3rd Test: England vs India at The Oval

well, Kumble looks likely to reach 100, so the above won't be true anymore!

Re: 3rd Test: England vs India at The Oval

Congrats to Kumble on his maiden century!

took him 118 matches, longest wait ever. old reacord was 97 set by Chaminda Vaas

Re: 3rd Test: England vs India at The Oval

Rather embarassing for England in the end. In the game they neede to come out firing, the Indian batting line-up has made their bowling attack look second-rate.

As Bluto mentioned, Anil Kumble scored his maiden test century, making 110 not out. earlier, tendulkar made 82 and MS Dhoni smashed a quick fire 92 as the Indians piled on the runs. Even S Sreesanth, batting at 11, made an entertaining 35.

India all out for 664 off 170 overs. The best of the bowlers was James Anderson with 4/182.

There was 55 extras too, including a staggering 33 byes, doesn't give much positive though about Matt Prior's performance.

In reply, England are 0/5.

Re: 3rd Test: England vs India at The Oval

Oh dear, Strauss tried to pull Zaheer Khan but hits it straight to Sreesanth in the deep.

Just the strike India needed before stumps, there's less than four overs left on Day 2.

1/12 in the 5th over.

Re: 3rd Test: England vs India at The Oval

England closed day on 24 for 1.

I have to say, Kumble scoring test hundred is one of the most freakish things. Well, not as freaky as Dizzy scoring a maiden double century, but that one was against Bangladesh. England is supposed to be a much better side than Bangladesh. Anyway, congratulations to the old man!!! Now, hopefully he does the job which India really have him in the team for year in year out - winning test matches!!!

Re: 3rd Test: England vs India at The Oval

England 4/153 which leaves them a massive 511 runs behind midway through day 3 with only 6 wickets in hand. They have absoluetly no chance of a win giving Inida victory in the series.

Re: 3rd Test: England vs India at The Oval

England are slowly picking off these runs but they are still a long way away from getting there.

They're currently 5/266, 398 runs behind India's first innings total. They still require 199 runs to avoid the follow-on.

Paul Collingwood is holding the innings together at the moment and is 58 not out. Ian Bell is 30 not out. The only wicket to fall since Jolldo's post was Kevin Pietersen who played poor shot to Anil Kumble and was out in the last over before tea.

21 overs left today and three overs till the new ball is due. England would be happy if they could get to the end of the day without any further losses and maybe 60 runs taken off the remaining deficit. Their chances of winning the game are also slipping quite rapidly.

EDIT: Haha, Laxman's getting a bowl!! He hasn't bowled for over 50 tests!!

Re: 3rd Test: England vs India at The Oval

Looks like England will follow on tomorrow, closed day at 326 for 9 wickets and no strong batsman not out. Come on Kumble, press on for man of the match!!!

Re: 3rd Test: England vs India at The Oval

England is all gone for 345, but incredibly Rahul Dravid has decided not to enforce a follow on!! India will bat again, and looks like the goal is to crush England under a huge total. Apparently Dravid needs more support for his bowlers for 2nd innings.

Re: 3rd Test: England vs India at The Oval

Wassim Jaffer given out on 0 for a bogus LBW, the ball was never going to hit the stump. Anyway, the objective for India here should be to run up the score as quickly as possible and put England under more pressure.

Re: 3rd Test: England vs India at The Oval

What is going on here? Karthik goes too immediately after that. India 10 for 2. Both Dravid and Tendulkar are on 0 and it's about to start raining!
