Australia in South Africa

Re: Australia in South Africa

Kallis flashes at Siddle and the ball travels to Hussey in the gully who takes a sharp catch. South Africa are 3/57, McKenzie on 17, de Villiers 3.

Re: Australia in South Africa

Stumps on day three, SA are 3/85, McKenzie on 35, de Villiers 35.

Great day as far as Australia are concerned, SA still trail by 381 runs so they have a lot of work to do on day three if they want to get back into this game.

Re: Australia in South Africa

Game poised in the favour of Australia but I can see a draw as the final outcome.

SA will probably get to within 75-125 of the Australian total, they bat deep and will expect the tail to wag. Depending on the current partnership, then they may get to within 25 or so. If they manage this, then I'd expect to see Australia batting again but not until the very end of the 3rd day or more likely the 4th morning.

From here it'll be a case of setting a target of 350 or as near as possible, whilst giving themselves a minimum of 3 sessions to pick up the 10 wickets. Then again, depending on the state of the pitch they may play safety first and make sure that a draw or Aus win is the most likely outcome.

Then again, anything can and probably will happen.

Re: Australia in South Africa

Gee it's frustrating not having Foxtel anymore, might have to go down the pub tonight.

Re: Australia in South Africa

North gets a wicket. South Africa 8/157, De Villiers on 63*.

Johnson 3/25 off 18.
Siddle 3/64 off 17.
Hilfenhaus 1/33 off 20.
McDonald 0/11 off 7.
North 1/15 off 4.

Top bowling effort by Johnno especially.

Re: Australia in South Africa

Man I have been surprised by the Aussies in this test thus far.

Lead of 275, Hughes looking in fine form.

Re: Australia in South Africa

SAF all out for 220

awesome effort from the aussies.... macca gets a crucial wicket of steyn after a partnership was building

just shows the idiotic idea of playing an unfit symonds in melbourne. Having 5 bowlers meant there was fresh bowlers once AB and steyn got a partnership going.

hughes attacking and the aussies get to tea on day three at 0/30, a lead of 276.

bat for 3 more sessions and set them 500?

Re: Australia in South Africa

Smith is having a shocker

Drops Ponting, makes a duck then gives Hughes a life by not referring it when he gloves the ball down legside

Re: Australia in South Africa

Raining now apparently, probably the right decision to go off, last thing you want is Steyn or Morkel grabbing 2 or 3 wickets and getting SA back into the game.

So it's raining now.

Re: Australia in South Africa

Play called off, 1/51 at stumps, a lead of 297. Hughes on 36, Ponting one, Morkel the wicket-taker who bowled a beauty to square up Katich who could only edge behind to Boucher.

Other than that and de Villiers' century, South Africa have been well and truly outplayed, thrashed even so far. Johnson and Siddle bowled well and the rest backed them up well with none of the Protea batters besides de Villiers and to a lesser extent McKenzie offering any resistence.

On another note, the bad light has really hurt Australia here, losing about 30 overs today but they are still in control and will be looking to bat till about tea time on day four. If they can do that and score 100 runs per session (which is very gettable) then they should have a lead of about 500 and still have four sessions to bowl South Africa out.

South Africa have a lot to do to save this test, the only way they that might do it is if the weather and light intervene as they look a shadow of the side that beat Australia about seven weeks ago.

Play will start 30 mins early as well tomorrow at 10am local time.

Re: Australia in South Africa

I think Australia should declare with 400 on the South Africans, and four sessions to do it. At least then South Africa can aim to win the test match and we will see a decent game of cricket! If it gets to the stage where they are chasing 500+ it will just be a null result.

Really? If Bollinger played instead of McDonald, the final four would read as,

Johnson
Siddle
Hilfenhaus
Bollinger

Johnson can almost be classified as a bowling all-rounder now, his 96 today has proved he is a performer with both bat and ball. Even Siddle is capable of hanging around at times. I wouldn't say the tail would be long at all with Bollinger there and I don't think his batting should be a factor at all if we pick him as he's there to take wickets, not score runs.

Exactly.
I'd classify Johnson as a bowling all rounder. We all know he can bat.
And Siddle can play, hes no shocker with the bat.
That leaves only Hilfy and Bollinger as the "true tailenders"
Most teams number 10 and 11 can't bat anyway.
I don't rate Mcdonalds batting either.

Re: Australia in South Africa

Day 3 has begun. Hughes has just made his 50, well done to him. :)

Aussies 1/87 from 23.1.

Re: Australia in South Africa

Ponting out.
Ponting gets a bit of a shock spotting the fielder in the deep, Kallis bangs it in short and the ball comes on to Ponting a lot slower than he would have liked, he goes through with the front foot pull but there's not much of a follow-through with the shot, the ball lands down Amla's throat at deep square-leg.

Kallis gets him for 25. 2/99

Re: Australia in South Africa

Hussey goes for a golden!!

Kallis to Hussey, OUT, very uncharacteristic from Hussey and Kallis is on a hat-trick, Kallis bangs it in short and Hussey wants to pull it away, the ball gets a little too high on him and he gets a thick top edge which swirls to Ntini at short square-leg

Kallis on a hattrick next over. What a first over from the man.

Re: Australia in South Africa

Now Clarke out!! 3 wickets in 4 balls!! South Africa back in it!!

Harris to Clarke, OUT, that's an absolute stunner from Kallis! Harris flights it on middle and gets amazing drift through the air, the ball moves towards the offstump and Clarke gets forward and the ball takes the thick outside edge and travels to Kallis' right at first slip, he doesn't have much time to dive but he ends yup pulling off a one-handed stunner

4/99.

Kallis on fire. He's had a hand in all three wickets.
