Australian Test XI - Selection Thread

What about his brother? Surely several seasons of heavy scoring domestically count for something, as they did with Mike. Averaging 71 this season (no not outs either). Even better, Rogers opening the innings (Ave.74 + prolific seasons to back it up), and Watson to middle order where he can come in and murder tiring attacks.

I don't submit these simply because they're Victorians - WA can take the credit for both if you like.

I've done Hodge to death. Now it's too late. Both he and I agreed it was pointless and need to move on.

lol, suggests two Bushrangers and then tries to pass it off as they originally came from WA, followed by bringing up Hodge, again. Hussey has been making runs and will probably be in the side for the summer, you really need to get over the obsession.

If they were to drop him they should've done it during the Ashes and replaced him with Watson, keeping Hughes at the top of the order hoping that he'd get over his deficiencies mid tour.

Re: Australian Test XI - Selection Thread

Exactly, now that Hussey has been selected at the start of the summer it is necessary to give him the entire summer and then evaluate his performance and compare and contrast that performance to the performance of prospective candidates in the shield fixtures. This will be made easier by the fact that by the end of the summer the shield will be nearly complete and the selectors will have a large sample size of performances.

Of course if Hussey comes out and makes 2 and 5 at Perth and then goes to the MCG and gets a pair then the selectors may have to act - however that is a unique situation.

Re: Australian Test XI - Selection Thread

What's with this myth that Hughes is pathetic against short bowling? So Flintoff roughed him up a bit, many others have also fallen victim to freddy. I've seen him play some of the best pull shots I've ever seen at state level.

Re: Australian Test XI - Selection Thread

Media spin. If Hughes was so terrible against short-pitched bowling he wouldn't have got to where he is today. It's not like this horrible flaw suddenly appeared the moment Steve Harmison got stuck into him.

Exactly right.

Re: Australian Test XI - Selection Thread

Probably explains why he cant make runs on the WACA or MCG or never opened at the GABBA

Hard to show up a player who cant play short pitched bowling when they are always playing on the SCG where the vast majority of his innings have been

The whole reason it hasnt been found out is because he has only just started, they picked him too early

I've said it before, and I will say it again.

I would only pick a very young player like them if they can string together at least three seasons where they still have a good results match in and out. Obviously not doing something like averaging 60 the whole time, but something like Dave Hussey or Hodge has done and just work away for a few seasons straight.

This way you know they aren't just a one hit wonder and are going to be in the team for a while yet. Hughes was too young to be put in the side, it was a risk that rarely comes off.

He just recently made 58 on the WACA, I'll scout through some more stats soon.

Re: Australian Test XI - Selection Thread

boys, the real point is that hughes probably won't be ready or good enough compared to player in the team now to be selected in the squad.

i real point i want to put through is what is the use of north? north in my opinion is pretty useless... batting at no.6 and bowls part time? i think the combination of katich and clarke can easy fill that gap, and the selectors could bring in jaques to the top and bring watson back down to 6 so that he can bowl more? i think its just a bit illogical, doesn't play a large enough role in the squad.

I agree, North is playing in the all rounders position and he only gets a bowl if another bowler is injured, and quite rightly so. They aren't bowling Watson enough because he is a quite classy bowler, so he isn't filling his all rounder role.

Katich should not be brought down the order because opening is where he found his devastating form. Number 6 got him dropped the last time he was there.

If Watson can open, surely North can as well?

Re: Australian Test XI - Selection Thread

probably i don't know... but we got plenty of specialist openers out there in waiting like jaques and klinger and rogers. i don't know, maybe bring north in when ponting or clarke retires.

I would want to be bringing in Jaques very quickly as soon as Watson starts failing a little as an opener, which he hasn't been doing so far.

Really the only one that can move at the moment is Hussey, and the selectors seem content with sticking him until his retirement in the hope of another world best streak. One theory I had with the Hussey dropping thing is they are waiting until his average drops below 50. It shows the calibre of his playing that he has been out of form for two years and still has an average of 52. Plus he's an all rounder, he has a bowling average lower than his batting average (50.1) :p

Its gonna be a long time till Clarke retires, Jaques and Klinger will retire before him to my memory. Wouldn't be surprised if his back forces him out soon though.

To be honest I don't see anything wrong with the batting line-up. It could do with Jaques but who to drop? Watson has been providing consistent bowling at levels equal to the others in the team, and has been scoring at what I guess is about a 45 average lately putting in the bigger ones when it has mattered most. North hasn't been completely sensational but is definitely at the same class as the rest there.

I got slammed for saying he is the only one in the side that can be classed as one to 'move aside' for expansion.

Katich can't bowl too much because of injury and apparently he likes to at least practice a bit beforehand in the nets. Not sure but I think Clarke may also have had a few problems recently as well?

Clarke has always had a bad back and it likely isnt helped by bowling

Re: Australian Test XI - Selection Thread

Dropping North is absolute rubbish. The guy has done nothing wrong in the time he has been in the side, he scored the second most runs (behind Clarke) in the Ashes tour, singlehandedly saved us in the third test (along with Clarke) and then scored a fine hundred, giving Australia a match-winning lead on first innings in the fourth test. Add to that he had another good innings at the Gabba, scored a century on debut against South Africa so he has more then earned his spot in the side.

North is not an all-rounder and never will be so this idea that North is filling the all-rounder's role is complete crap because he isn't. Shane Watson is the team's recognised all-rounder, not Marcus. North's role in the side is primarily as a batter who may be tossed the ball in a game if Ponting decides to change things up. This is no different to when Clarke is given the ball and no-one on here considers Clarke to be an all-round player. He's a batsman who can send down a few offies when needed and that is what North is also.

If anyone is in danger of being dropped it'd be Hussey, to a lesser-extent Watson and perhaps even Haddin.

Re: Australian Test XI - Selection Thread

i think i have to side with boris with this one...

but the point is do we want a side that is:

1. versatile where every player provides somthing unique to the team (take out north/hussey for jaques)

or

2. performs well mearly at what they do (keeping the team as it is)

Re: Australian Test XI - Selection Thread

Anyone realise that we are playing Watson at the top of the order as an All Rounder, which means we can afford to have a pure batsman in North at #6?
